Assignment Modification

The assignment I am modifying is for a student named Skylar. The math class he takes

part in is classified as a Co-op Contemporary Math course for students who are underachieving

in mathematics. 18 out of the 36 students have specific learning disabilities and have difficulty

with math. Skylar faces many difficulties with the majority of his courses but math has proven to

be the most challenging subject for him. After speaking with the instructor I learned that Skylar

along with the majority of students in this class require longer periods of time for every

assignment. Skylar also utilizes a partner-method for some assignments.

The assignment I chose to modify was originally a timed quiz with twenty questions.

Students are given the entire class period (90 minutes) to complete quiz. The quiz is meant to test

students knowledge of division of fractions derived from word problems. For the quiz, students

are given a sheet of paper with the questions printed and a sheet of lined notebook paper. No

electronics are permitted as many of the students are easily distracted by technology.

In order to modify this assignment in a way that would be appropriate for the majority of

students in the class I decided to take the quiz and make it a partnered assignment. Each of the

students assignment sheets will have the directions and/or specific rules for solving printed
along the top of the page. There will also be an example problem following the directions.

Students will split the work, each student choosing to do either the odd numbers or the even

numbered problems. Before turning in the assignment students need to walk their partner through

how they solved their specific set of problems. Each pair will be allowed a calculator, multiple

pieces of scratch paper, and a white board to work out their problems. The time limit will also be

reduced down to 60 minutes considering the work each student will be doing has been reduced. I

believe that turning this assignment into classwork is more beneficial for the students in this

class because they can work with partners who may have more experience or are at a higher level

with mathematics. I also know from experience that reducing the amount of quizzes by turning

assignments into class work helps students who have testing anxiety.

The materials I will provide for the students include loose-leaf paper, whiteboards,

markers, calculators, pencils, and the assignment sheet. I believe a whiteboard and marker is

another great medium that can be used by students to work out math problems. Calculators

should not be required for this assignment but students should have access to them in the event

that they would like to check their work.
