It's very important to use the correct form of the verb when we make sentences. Verbs can be in their PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE tenses. We use the "past tense” to express an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. For regular verbs, we add "ED" to the end of the verb to get the past tense. Vocabulary Example : I enjoyed my vacation. She finished her homework early. My mother baked a cake. We played soccer.

We use the "present tense" to express that an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or something that often happens. Example : I play tennis. She does not play tennis. She always forgets her purse. The sun does not circle the earth.

We use the "simple future tense" when there is no plan or decision to do something before we speak. Example : I will enjoy my vacation. She will finish her homework later. My mother will bake a cake for my birthday. We will play soccer this afternoon.

Tips Using correct punctuation marks is very important in making more effective sentences. When we read, it's also very important to pay attention to these punctuation marks so that we can read with proper intonation and emotion.

We use the period (.) to end a complete sentence.

Example : Eric enjoyed his vacation. I live in Korea. My name is Elmo. It rained this morning. Mother baked some cookies. Please call me later.

We use the exclamation point (!) at the end of a sentence to show great surprise. We also use it to make what we say sound stronger.

Example : Wow! This house is huge! I had so much fun at the beach! Go away! I forgot to do my homework! Ouch! That hurts! We won!

- 28 -

We use the comma (,) to separate a list of items or to separate phrases.

Examples : I need to buy a pencil, an eraser, and a box of crayons. Mark planted some tomatoes, cabbages, and carrots. When I was in Seoul, I lived with my Aunt. We went swimming, and then we had a barbecue party. I met Tom, Dick, and Harry.

We use the question mark (?) at the end of a question.

Examples : Did you enjoy your vacation? It's nice to be back in school, isn't it? Who is your English teacher? What is your favorite computer game? Where did you put my bag?

Practice Reading These shoes are too big for me. I don't have any homework. The exam was very easy. My favorite subjects are Math, English, and Science. Julia does not eat pork, beef, or chicken.
