Maintenance

Vises

Cleaning and Lubrication

1. The vises should be cleaned after each use. Use the built-
in flush hose to wash grit off of the vises.
2. Periodic lubrication of the vises is required whenever the
sliding of the vise block or rotation of the vise lever
becomes difficult. Lubricate vises at grease fittings with a
high grade waterproof grease. Frequently adding small
amounts of grease often is better than adding large
amounts of grease at infrequent intervals.

Locking Adjustment

This procedure is performed when rotation of the vise lever

Note no longer secures the sample tightly or when the vise lever
cannot be moved.

Never force vise levers - forcing will cause excessive

component wear and reduce service life of vises.
1. Remove the vise from the T-slot table by removing the
Bolts. Refer to figure 4, page 21.
2. Working from the bottom of the vise, remove the Screw
from the Vise Block. Refer to figure 10, page 38.
3. Use a 5 /64-inch wrench to adjust the Setscrew in the vise
block. Adjust the screw in and out until the vise block
slides freely on the Slide Shaft, and rotation of the vise
lever securely locks the vise block in place.
4. If step 3 is performed successfully, skip to step 5. If step 3
cannot be successfully performed, proceed as follows.
A. Refer to figure 10, page 38 and remove the
Setscrews, the Stop Block, and the Vise Base.
B. Remove the four Screws, the Bottom Cover and the
Gasket from the Vise Block.
C. Note exactly how the Locking Ring is oriented in the
vise block - it will be rotated 180o . Remove the
locking ring and the Spring from the vise block.

24 CM-24 Instruction Manual

D. Clean the locking ring and spring, then reassemble in
the vise block after rotating the locking ring 180o .
E. Pack the inside of the vise block with a high grade of
waterproof grease.
F. Reassemble the gasket, bottom cover, and the four
screws on the vise block.
G. Reassemble the slide shaft through the vise base, the
vise block and the stop block until the hole in the
slide shaft aligns with the screw hole in the vise base.
Secure the stop block and the slide shaft with the
setscrews removed earlier.
5. Reinstall the Screw to keep dirt out of the adjustment
hole.
6. Reinstall the vise on the T-slot table.

Instruction Manual CM-24 25

3. Roll the tank to a convenient drain and allow sludge to
settle until the coolant is relatively clear. When the sludge
has settled, open the valve and empty the coolant into the
drain. If a floor drain is unavailable, the tank can be
drained into a separate container. Use a separate hose to
rinse sludge from the tank.
4. Remove the Tank Lid, lift the Weir Plates out of the tank.
Scrape off any sludge out of the bottom and wipe down
the sides of the tank. Dispose of the sludge in an
appropriate container.

!
CAUTION DO NOT empty sludge in plant drain facilities.
Sludge emptied in facility drains may clog them.

5. Refill the tank with clean water and 2 quarts of Rust

Inhibiting Additive.
6. Replace the lid and roll the tank back into place.
7. Switch the toggle of the pump lift valve to lower the
coolant pump into the tank.
8. Slide the drain cap back over the hole in the coolant tank
lid.

Abrasive Wheel Selection

To cut properly, a bonded abrasive wheel must be matched to

the cutoff machine. Primary considerations are surface speed
for a given wheel diameter, and types of cooling system
employed. Selection must be made from the proper family of
abrasive wheels to meet the requirements for the vast variety
of materials and hardness levels.
The principle controlling and guiding variables for wheel
selection can be classified as follows.
1. Abrasive Grain Type and Grit Size
2. Bond: Rubber; Resinoid; Resin Rubber
3. Bond Type: Soft; Medium; Hard
4. Density (Structure): Open; Dense
In general, hard wheels are used to section soft materials,
while soft wheels are used for hard materials. Hard
aluminum oxide (Al2 O3 ) wheels are generally recommended for
sectioning steels and high tensile strength materials. Soft
silicon carbide (SiC) wheels are used for some grades of iron,
nonferrous materials, titanium, zirconium, uranium and their
alloys.
Regardless of bond hardness, the coarser grit sizes will cut
faster but will not leave as smooth a surface finish as finer grit.
The purpose of the bonding material is to hold the abrasive
grains in place. In general, rubber bonded wheels are used for
wet operation and are best suited for metallographic
specimens. Resinoid bonds are used for dry cutting.
Resin/rubber can be used wet or dry and may offer an economy
factor.
To cut clean and fast, the bond must wear away or break down
rapidly enough to expose the new abrasive grain. Dense wheels
tend to hold the abrasive material longer while open wheels
lose abrasive material more quickly, continually exposing a
sharp edge. Thus, dense wheels are better for soft materials,
open wheels for harder materials.
Softer bond wheels are used for sectioning hard metals and
alloys, whereas harder bond wheels are used for softer
materials. As bond hardness increases, the wheel wear is
decreased.
