Table 1 In REV with change in different confining pressures

The absolute value of REV is though subjective to the interpretation of the data by the investigator.
In this study REV is considered to be the smallest volume at which (and after which) 95% of all
observed data points would have a maximum deviation of 0.05.

To arrive at the value of REV the following steps were taken:

1. Numerous data points were generated with varying the size of the sample volume and at
each measurement the value for porosity was calculated.
2. Plot 1. of varying sample size and porosity was generated for each confining pressure
3. To use various statistical methods it is necessary to have values following a normal
distribution. This was checked for each confining pressure at the block length of 50 voxels.
The results (Plot 2) give satisfactory match to a normal distribution.
4. REV is considered to be the smallest volume at which (and after which) 95% of all observed
data points would have a maximum deviation of 0.05.

Confining Torrealba et.4069 0.78 0. Intuitively.  Though to assess the relation between bead size and REV more experiments with similar confining pressures would be needed at different bead sizes. The confining pressure has a drastic effect on REV.Comments on: Q1. Q3. More compact structures would follow a less random arrangement and hence lower REV. Or REV of 237mm3 and 48 mm3 at 25 psi and 200 psi confining pressures results in having 119 and 24 beads in an REV for 25 psi and 200 psi respectively (With a bead diameter of 0. the sand grains would have lesser freedom at higher confining pressure as structure and arrangement of the sand pack would be more rigid under high pressures. if any.78mm) This observation can suggest that:  Size of REV is only dependent upon pressure for a specific bead size.34 .2570 0.41 200 47. al.
