ACTIVITY # 5

BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINERING

THEVENIN’S THEOREM

OBJECTIVE:

1. To verify Thevenin’s Theorem principle

**EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS:
**

Resistors

1 91 Ω 1 0-1 potentiometer

1 220 Ω 1 DMM ( or VOM )

1 330 Ω 1 dc Power supply

1 470 Ω

PROCEDURE: PART 1

CALCULATIONS:

a. Insert the measured resistor values and calculate the Thevenin voltage and

resistance for the network to the left of points a – a’ .

FIGURE 8.1

Eth = 26.666V

Rth = 26.6667Ω

-Ia (R1 + RA) + E1 = 0

Ia(10 +20 ) = 40

Ia = 1.3333 Amp

-IL(Ro +RL ) + Vo = 0 IL= 26. Compare to the result of ( b ) .6667 + 35 ) IL = .6667Ω -Vo + Ia(R3) = 0 Vo = (1. Ro = 20 + (10)(20) / (10 +20) Ro = 26. Insert the values obtained in ( a ) in the schematic of figure 8.1 using series parallel techniques ( use measured resistor values).4324 Amp c. Calculate the current IL in the original network of Figure 8.666 V b.666V / (26.3333)(20) Vo= 26.1 and calculate IL FIGURE 8.

How does it compare to the value determine in ( a )? Calculate the percent difference from { Rth ( from (e) . MEASUREMENTS: d. Construct the network of Figure 8. IL = . FIGURE 8.3 and measuring the resistance between points a-a’. Determine Rth by constructing the network of Figure 8.4 Eth (measured) = _____________________ .3 Rth = _____________________________ f. ________ _________ _______a ___ R1 = 330Ω R3 =91Ω R2 = 220 Ω / Voltmeter ( DMM or VOM) ____________________________________ FIGURE 8. VL= 13.4324 Amp : The result obtained are equal.Rth ( from (a) } x 100% % Difference = ____________________________________ Rth ( from ( a ) ) % Difference = __________________________ g.333 Amp RL = e.1 and measure the voltage VL. Calculate the current IL and compare to the result of ( b ). Determine Eth by constructing the network of Figure 8.4 and measuring the open- circuit voltage between points a-a’.

0-1 kohm ____________ ____ _______ Rth _____________a ____ IL Eth RL = 470Ω VL _______________________________a'____ Figure 8. Then measure the voltage VL and calculate the current IL.5 VL (measured)= _________________________ IL( calculated from VL ) = ___________________ Compute the percent difference between levels of IL from ( b) and the above using % difference = IL (from (g) . How does this value compare to the result of (a)? Determine the present difference using an equation similar to that appearing in (e). Use the ohmmeter section of your meters to set the potentiometer property. % difference = __________________________ h. respectively. Construct the network of Figure 8.5 and set the values obtained for Eth and R th in ( e ) and (f).IL ( from ( b ) x 100 % IL ( from ( b ) % difference = _____________________________ .
