of the most highly regarded and prestigious places to compete at international level in this sport, it is known at international level as the Jet Ski Capital of Europe.

THE PROJECT
EGPiS, Encouraging Girls' Participation in Sports, is an Erasmus+ project aimed at
the development of women's sport that aims to identify tools to overcome the
most common barriers that prevent girls’ to practice sports.
Recent studies reveal that sports participation among European children and
adolescents is far from consistent. Even if a "majority of 15-24 years (64%), doing
exercise or practice a sport at least once a week", physical activity tends to fall in
the age group between 13 and 17 years old in most European countries and the
difference between genders is stronger in this age group: 74% of boys exercising
on a regular basis, while participation among girls of the same age group stands
at only 55%.
EGPiS Project aims to investigate the reasons for the girls’ engagement and drop
out from sports in the age group between 13 to 17 years old, in order to develop
tools to overcome the most common barriers that prevent girls’ to practice sports,
providing the ability to live sports as a fun and growth opportunity in a safe
environment.
We are achieving this goal through research, exchange of common experiences
and new methodological approaches identified through studies and surveys with
stakeholders, they have enabled the development of strategies and tools that we
are able to prevent the abandon girls’ or remain cut off from the sports in general
and motivate adolescents to integrate sports activities in their habits.
The project is being carried out by organizations that are based in Great Britain,
Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, Sweden and Turkey with the scientific collabora-
tion of the Cyprus University of Technology , involves the construction of a link
between physical education in schools and extracurricular activities, the develo-
pment of a holistic pilot-program supported by its own methodology, the involve-
ment of the teachers and coaches who are trained in the course of the project
with an hands-on learning approach.
During the first part of the project we have been study to detect existing good
practices in the field and has been carried out a survey in schools to know what
were the reasons that lead girls to abandon or not to engage in sports activities
and taking account of the internal characteristics of each country due to the
culture, the traditions, the influence of religions, the different social development
and more, was then identified a methodology to address the problem and
offered the girls a pilot-project that is based on "having fun playing sports."
We believe, by this way, that we are able to better respond to the needs of the
girls' on multiple levels; on the personal motivation and individual development,
also on psycho-physical well-being and in the social support. We believe that our
good practices contribute to remove most of the barriers related with the enga-
gement and help to prevent girls' from dropping out of sports.
