What is manufacturing in space ?

Production of goods in an environment outside a planetary atmosphere

Specific examples cover:

Use of the unique space environment
Deep Space Industries - asteroid mining
Potentially hazardous processes

What is manufacturing in space ?

Use of the unique space environment

What are possible areas of interest ?
Growing good quality protein crystals to support structure based drug
design
Improved drug development
Development of zero g penicillin and antibiotics in space
Microencapsulation
Growing genetically matched replacement organs in space
Manufacturing of latex spheres
Developing improved Semiconductor material in space
Manufacturing of Contact lenses, Zeolites, Aerogels
.

Constraints associated with space

Low interest from private investigators due to multiple constraints associated

with space
Inability to utilize the microgravity environment on a regular basis
Launch delays (that result in sample degradation)
Amount of paperwork associated with obtaining flight approval
Uncertainties in schedule
The general uncertainty related to spaceflights

However for US costumers NASA has spent effort to make the access to the
ISS easier via the company CASIS.

Constraints associated with space: US solution

NASA / Centre for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)

Nasa has spent effort to make the access to the ISS easier
In 2011, NASA chose (CASIS) to be the sole manager of the ISS USLab.
The mission of CASIS is to maximize use of the Space Station for
innovation, which can benefit all humankind and inspire a new generation to
look to the stars.
The organisation has the responsibility of inciting the imagination of
entrepreneurs and scientists alike, accelerating and facilitating space-based
research as well as creating public awareness of National Lab research and
making space science more accessible to the world.
CASIS has access to funding that may be available to support R&D costs,
making discovery and validation more productive
Only for US costumers

Constraints associated with space: US solution

CASIS seems to be a success

CASIS attracts a large amount of private companies.
Acme: semiconductors
Astrileux: design and high volume manufacturing of next generation
integrated circuits chips
1dropdiagnostics: cutting edge medical diagnostics and life science
Cobra Puma Golf: golf sticks
DSI: Deep Space Industries: Asteroid mining
D-Orbit: propulsion Systems
Eclipse: thin films, optical coatings, advanced chemical sensors
Juxtopia: Augmented reality goggles for improving human performance
during operations in extreme environments on earth and in space
Lilly.inc: Leader in medical discovery

Constraints associated with space: What in Europe ?

For European costumers: via ESA (European Space Agency). This is a very
long process (5 to 10 years, even longer, )

HOW CAN WE OPTIMISE THE EUROPEAN SUPPLY CHAIN ?

11
Goal of the study

Market study to check interest in manufacturing in space by private

European companies
What could be a possible supply chain for European costumers
In cooperation with ESA ? (H2020 project IceCubes ?)
Via NASA / CASIS ?
Via China (they also have a space station now) ?
