1. Objective- 5 POINTS

Bria, my reading buddy, is a kindergartener at the Dufrocq School. She struggles with
phonemes, sight words, fluency, and reading comprehension. Over the past few visits, I have
been bringing worksheets that allow Bria to practice these previously mentioned reading skills
that she lacks. Additionally, I bring a book to every visit, and make sure that the theme of the
worksheets correlates with that of the book. For example, we read If You Give a Pig a Pancake
by Laura Numeroff, so I found some phonics worksheets with -ig words, and they all had pig
as one of the words. In my experience, worksheets and activities like letter recognition puzzles
were way more effective than simply reading a book to my buddy. I attribute the success of the
worksheets to the fact that Bria is more of a visual learner than an auditory learner. Also, even
at an early age, I notice that she leans towards having mostly a naturalist intelligence. I am
aware that all kids are inquisitive, but Bria is definitely more curious than the average kid, as
she is constantly asking questions with the intent and desire to understand how and why
everything works the way it does. Although I have already completed all my visits, if I still had
more visits to complete, I would work with Bria more on identifying sight words, as she has to
sound out each letter of basic words like what in order to read them.
2. Reflective- 5 POINTS
I witnessed firsthand racial and ethnic conflict at the Dufrocq School, as I felt
discriminated against because of my race. After talking with other Caucasian reading buddies, I
learned that they felt the same way. Thankfully, this injustice was not from our reading
buddies, but rather from the faculty, staff, and teachers particularly the secretary. Although I
loved my one-on-one experience with my reading buddy, I dreaded having to check in every
week with the secretary. She was rude to say the least, and I attribute her discrimination
towards me because of my race, as she did not treat black people who walked into the office in
the same manner. Dufrocq is a primarily black school, and from the way I was treated and the
vibes I was getting, they want to keep it that way. Dont be too worried - nothing major
happened to me, besides being blatantly ignored and talked down to like I was incompetent. I
didnt let this get to me, though. Despite how I knew I would be treated, I still walked in with a
big smile every week and always acknowledged everyone in the office with a friendly Hello! I
have lived a pretty sheltered life, so this was a learning experience for me. Most importantly,
my black reading buddy did not care that I was white, and I surely did not care that she was
black. I am glad to have established a positive relationship with Bria because we truly saw each
other as equal, which is how life is supposed to be. I now realize the value of diversity in schools
and the importance of implementing healthy interracial relationships at an early age.
3. Interpretive- 5 POINTS

I found that my reading buddys short attention span made her quickly lose focus when
reading stories. Therefore, I started to choose shorter stories. Like I stated before, the
worksheets and puzzles that I brought were a lot more effective in improving her reading skills
than just reading a book. Bringing colored markers also increased her interest in completing the
worksheets. At the end of each visit, I would ask Bria what she wanted to read about the next
week, and I would be sure to bring a book and worksheets that related to what she told me.
Bringing materials that she was interested in increased her attention-span and success.
Recognizing what learning style and what intelligence my reading buddy was helped a lot with
planning what we were going to do.

4. Decisional- 5 POINTS
The biggest lesson I have learned through this experience is to go with the flow. I am a
type A person, meaning I am very time urgent, like to plan ahead, and like to follow schedules
exactly. I came to come to terms with and accepted the fact that when teaching, sometimes my
plans will be thrown out the window, and its okay because likely it will be for the better. At the
end of the day, the most important thing is that my reading buddy/students learn something or
grasp a concept better - whether or not that be on the material I had planned.
