INTRODUCTION In the past, construction sector could be managed easily due to abundant of materials and resources. However, now, the resources have been depleted. Therefore, the technology used in the present construction sector must be able to counter this problem. It has to be able to find alternatives for these depleting resources.

THE FUTURE TREND OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY The future technology in construction can be seen from two aspect: ‡ Method ‡ Material

In terms of design and engineering

Integration of components and high cost of energy

The environmental conservation

METHOD

More prefabricated component will be used

Project funding

High energy cost will foster mass production of construction units or modules

High performance steel (HPS) which posses high yield strength with good workability. The welding process of HPS requires little heating.

Papercrete is a construction material which is produced by mixing recycled paper, water, cement and ordinary sand. Advantages: ‡ lightweight (80% of air content) ‡ very good insulation ‡ extraordinary strength ‡ high tensile strength ‡ low cost ‡ difficult to burn

High performance concrete (HPC) is the latest trend in concrete. HPC is a type of concrete which is produce from superplasticsizer materials, retarders, fly ash, and silicate. Advantages of concrete: ‡ high compression strength ‡ high density ‡ low permeability ‡ better resistance ‡ better performance ‡ high durability ‡ high axial strength

Lightweight concrete density is 560 ± 1840kg/m³ while ordinary concrete density is 1920 ± 2240kg/m³ depending on the type of aggregat. The compression strength for lightweight concrete is not higher than ordinary concrete but its durability is similar. Advantage: ‡ less use of structural steel reinforcement bars ‡ small foundation ‡ better fire resistance ‡ act as insulation material

Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) can be used as steel replcement. FRP can overcome concrete cracking problem and steel bar erosion which could happen to reinforce concrete. FRP is a composite material which made of fibre that is deposited into polymeric resin. It becomes an alternative material to reinforcement steel bar for structure. FRP also has high tensile strength.
