Calculation for design mix

By refering to EFNARC (2005), a calculation for self-compacting concrete design mix can be
made.

Legend: w =water
C = cement
F. Agg = Fine Aggregate
C. Agg = Coarse Aggregate

Assumption: fine aggregate by volume of mortar = 0.4

Free water =0.2
Water/cement ratio by volume =1.1

Calculation

w/c = 1.1
0.2/c= 1.1
c= 0.2/1.1
c= 0.1818
F. Agg /mortar = 0.41
F. Agg/F. Agg + w + c = 0.41
F.Agg = (0.41)( F. Agg + w + c)
= (0.41) (F.Agg + 0.2 + 0.1818)
= 0.41F.Agg + 0.157
F. Agg - 0.41F.Agg = 0.157
0.59 F.Agg = 0.157
F. Agg = 0.266

Assumption:
Density of cement, c = 3150 kg/m3
Previously, c= 0.1818
c/ c = 0.1818
c/3150 = 0.1818
c = 0.1818 x 3150 kg/m3
c =572.67 kg/m3
Assumption:
Density of F.Agg, FA = 2700kg/m3
Density of C.Agg, CA = 2700kg/m3
F.Agg/ FA = 0.266
F.Agg/2700 =0.266
F.Agg = 0.266 x 2700 kg/m3
= 718.2 kg/m3

Assumption coarse aggregate by volume = 0.25

C.Agg/ CA = 0.25
C.Agg/2700 = 0.25
C.Agg = 0.25 x 2700 kg/m3

w/ w = 0.2
w = 0.2 x 1000 kg/m3
w = 200kg/m3

Type of mix SCC (kg/m3)

Free-water content 200.00
Cement 572.67
Fine Aggregate 718.20
Coarse Aggregate 675.00
