Introduction:

"George Tulloch led an expedition to the spot where the Titanic sank in 1912. He and his crew

recovered numerous artifacts. Before leaving the site, Tulloch's team set out to raise a 20-ton piece of

iron. They were successful in lifting it to the surface, but a storm blew in and the ropes broke and the

Atlantic reclaimed her treasure. Tulloch was forced to retreat and regroup. Before he left, he did

something curious. He descended into the deep, and with the robotic arm of his submarine, attached a

strip of metal to a section of the hull. On the metal he'd written these words, 'I will come back, George

Tulloch.'i

Body:

Promise of Jesus

John 14: 1 3 Jesus promised that he will come back to the earth.
John 14: 18, 19 Jesus promised I will come to you in a little while.
Acts 1: 11 Two angels from heaven promised that this same Jesus would come back again.

What is the purpose of Jesuss second coming?

Last study we saw that we enter into an engagement relationship God when we believe in him.

But now God wants to draw even closer. God wants to marry his church.
Ephesians 5: 21 27 the relationship that Christ wanted to have and will have with his

church.

Today theres many misconceptions about the coming of Jesus. Some say he will come and reign in

Jerusalem, some say he will come as a thief. It seems like people are coming up with new theories with

every day. But, I want to see biblically the manner of his coming of Jesus today.

Second coming will be audible.

o 1 Thessalonians 4: 16 17 It is an audible event. The Lord comes with the voice of the

archangel.
Second coming will be visible
o Revelation 1: 7 When Jesus returns every eye shall see him.
Second coming will be glorious
o Matthew 24: 25 27 Christ knew that there will be many false conceptions about his

coming, thats why he said behold, if he is in the secret chambers, believe not. For

coming of the son of man will be like lightning coming out of the east and shines even to

the west.
Jesus will possess his human body when he will come the second time.
o Acts 1: 11 Many say that when Christ comes we cannot see him because he possess an

invisible body. But the angels say that in like manner, in the way he was taken up, the

same way he will come down.

The day of his coming will be a surprise to the people who are unready.
o 1 Thessalonians 5: 1 4; 2 Peter 3: 10 For the children of darkness, the day will

surprise or overtake them as a thief in the night. Many use this verse to teach the idea

of secret rapture, but the Bible is very clear in the above references that its a universal

event. Its a blessed hope and a waiting experience for those who are ready to meet the

Lord, but its a sudden surprise or a shock to those who are not ready.
o Illustration A thief doesnt give you a particular date or time on when he would come.

Jesus also predicted some signs for his second coming.

In Matthew 23 Jesus leaves the temple of Jerusalem for the last time. His disciples shows to

Jesus the temple and Jesus says there shall not be left here one stone upon another. Jesus

went and sat upon the Mount of Olives and his disciples came to Jesus to have a private

conversation. They ask Jesus when these things shall be, when the temple will be destroyed.

And they also asked what shall be the sign of the coming, and the end of the world?
Then Jesus gives them some of the signs of his coming.
o False religious teachers professing to be prophets and christs vs. 4, 5, 22, 24
o Wars and rumours of wars. vs. 6
o Natural disasters (earthquakes, famines, pestilence). vs. 7
o Persecution. vs. 9, 10
o Deception vs. 11
o We can see this happening in the world today.
Signs in heaven.
o Matthew 24: 29 After tribulation, sun will be darkened, moon shall not give her light

and the stars shall fall from heaven.

o Sun darkened and the mood did not give her light "The Dark Day, May 19,

1780,-so called on account of the remarkable darkness on that day extending all over

New England. In some places, persons could not see to read common print in the open

air for several hours together. . . The obscuration began at about ten o'clock in the

morning, and continued till the middle of the next night, but with differences of degree

and duration in different places. For several days previously the wind had been variable,

but chiefly from the southwest and northeast. The true cause of this remarkable

phenomenon is not known."1

o Stars fall from heaven An entire chapter in Deven's "Our First Century," pp. 329-336,

is devoted to the description of the great shower of stars of Nov. 13, 1833, which fulfilled

this prophecy in every respect. 2

What will be the condition of the society?
o 2 Timothy 3: 5 Nineteen sins which predominate in the last days.
o Isaiah 8: 19 Spiritualism will increase.
o Revelation 16: 14 Devils power to work miracles.
o 2 Corinthians 11: 13 15 Devil will personate individuals.
o Matthew 24: 12 Rising crime, violence and iniquity.
o 1 Thessalonians 5: 2, 3 Peace talks and all nations unite together.
Isaiah 8: 20 Our only trust should be in the word of God.
Matthew 24: 42 44 Our only safety is to be ready.

What will happen when Jesus comes?

John 14: 1 3 He will come the second time to take us to heaven.

Revelation 6: 15 16; 1: 7; Jeremiah 25: 33 The wicked will die when he comes
1 Thessalonians 4: 16, 17 Dead in Christ shall rise first and meet Jesus. The living righteous

will meet him in the air.

Revelation 20: 1 3 Satan bound in isolation with his angels for thousand years.

How to enter into heaven?

Revelation 22: 15 No more sin and sinners in heaven.

John 3: 16 To believe in Jesus means to enter into an engagement relationship with Christ.
2 Peter 3: 9 God is waiting for us to repent.

Conclusion:

A man visiting a certain school gave out that he would give a prize to the pupil whose desk he found in

the best order when he returned. "But when will you return?" some of them asked.

"That I cannot tell," was the answer.

A little girl, who had been noted for her disorderly habits, announced that she meant to win the prize.

"You!" her schoolmates jeered. "Why, your desk is always out of order."

"Oh, but I mean to clean it the first of every week."

"But suppose he should come at the end of the week?" someone asked.

"Then I will clean it every morning.

"But he may come at the end of the day."

For a moment the little girl was silent. "I know what I'll do," she said decidedly; "I'll just keep it clean."

2 Bible Handbook. Pg. 18. 3

So it must be with the Lord's servants who would be ready to receive a prize at His coming. It may be

at midnight, at cockcrowing, or in the morning. The exhortation is not "Get ye ready," but "Be ye

ready."ii
