chapter 3
METHODS OF RESEARCH AND PROCEDURES

This chapter concentrates on the discussion of the research methods and

procedures adhered to by the researcher in order to answer systematically the
specific problems posed for investigation. Specifically, the method of research,
the population and the sample size, the description of the respondents, the
researcher instrument applied, the data gathering procedure and the statistical
treatment of data used for accurate data analysis and interpretation were
elucidated in this chapter.

Research Design

Research methodology is defined as a discussion and analysis within the

body of a research report of the research design, data collection methods,
sampling techniques, fieldwork procedures when executing the research
and data analysis efforts. This research was conducted to see how the
relationship of how the use of intrinsic job characteristic affects the work
productivity of the employees of accommodation establishments in
Muntinlupa City, Alabang.

Respondents of the Study

The researcher utilized a population frame of the front liner employees of

various five star hotels comprising the area around Filinvest Corporation. A
maximum of 60 front liners here chosen to complete the said
questionnaire. In particular, front liners employees may composed of
varied position like front office and the housekeeping personnel of a
certain hotel.

Sample Size

A sample size refers to the actual number of subjects selected to

represent the actual population characteristics (Sekarean 2003). For the
purpose of this study, the researcher chose the non probability
techniques in selecting the sample size. In particular, the researcher
considered accidental or convenient sampling. Wherein, the researcher
made use of the free time of the respondents involved (i.e. after the
scheduled shift, respondents were asked to answer the survey

questionnaire, in which the close acquaintance of the researcher was
requested to distribute the questionnaire to his/her fellow employees)

This study is descriptive in nature. This study is undertaken in enable to

ascertain and to be able to describe the characteristic of the variable in a
situation. On this study, the collection of data was based on two types of
data which consist of the primary and the secondary data.

Kinds of Data

The researcher utilized only empirical and direct data set of questionnaires
which were gathered coming from the respondents.

Primary Data

Primary data refers to the information acquired first hand by the

researcher. And the principal information of this study was accumulated
from the research questionnaires. . An informal interview with the
respondents was also accumulated. This questionnaire was divided into
parts wherein those questions are made relevant with each variable.

Instrumentation

In order to determine the most accurate data, the researcher, made use of
a sampling technique called snowballing or networking, in which the
researcher made several informal interviews aside from observation
conducted. The survey questionnaires used were consisting of close
ended questions in order to come up with easier data gathering and to
achieve first rate and dependable analysis and interference of the study.
Self administered questionnaire and phone interviews were used in
addition to collect data.

Construction of the Questionnaire

The items of the questionnaire were derived from websites, reports on

related studies and from the review of related literatures. The researcher
gain insights into the construction of the questionnaire through books on
fundamentals of research and foreign research questionnaires. Some of
the research materials were derived from the Hackman and Oldham job
diagnostic survey, Katz & Van Maanens Loci of Work.

Validation of the Questionnaire

After the researcher finished the questionnaire, will given to the adviser for
correction and statistical tenability. The questionnaire will go underwent
editing for language and grammar before they will be given to the
respondents. A permission to conduct the survey will be requested, and
after the administration is done by the researcher personally, the
questionnaires will be retrieved immediately.

A necessary revision of the questionnaires weaknesses and errors prior

to the preparation of the final form may be needed. A dry run will be
conducted to determine the validity of the items in the questionnaire.

Evaluation and Scoring

For the respondents assessment on the effectiveness, the following

options were assigned the following points:

OPTIONS ASSIGNED POINTS

Strongly Agree 5

Agree 4

Doubtful 3

Disagree 2

Strongly Disagree 1

Statistical Methods Employed for Data Analyses

The researcher used both descriptive and inferential statistics to

analyze and interpret data.

Descriptive Statistics

The following descriptive statistics were used:

Percentage. Percentage is used to describe how a part relates to its whole

and is approximated by getting the ratio of the group and the total number
of elements in the group. This is extensively used in describing the profile

of the respondents in terms of age groups, gender, civil status, and family
income.

Weighted Mean. Since the options to the items of the questionnaires are
assigned points, the weighted mean is used as the measure of central
tendency. In interpreting weighted mean in the text of the study, the
following intervals were observed:

Interpretations Interval Observed

Strongly Agree (SA) 4.20 5.0

Agree (A) 3.40 4.19

Doubtful 2.60 3.39

Disagree (D) 1.80 2.59

Strongly Disagree (SD) 1.0 1.79

Ranking. After the weighted means were given verbal interpretations, they
were ranked according to the size of their magnitudes from the highest to
the lowest, so that proper interpretations may be given to them to
determine the importance of their position relative to other items.
