The Documentaries

Something From Nothing: Art of Rap. is Ice Ts directorial debut and his first documentary that
was released in 2012. The film grossed $288,312 worldwide. The documentary mainly
focuses on the craft of writing rap verses, history of how the genre came to be,
anecdotes from the interviewees and freestyle performances from experienced rappers
from all over America; from the east coast, west coast, midwest and the south. Young and
old. From the popular and successful to the rough, battle rap, bread underground rapper. From
the early rappers who developed it and to the younger generations who are carrying the torch.

The tendency is to reveal how the rappers write some of their classic songs and in some ways
its to preserve the history of the genre, it does analyze and interrogate as he ask over th . The
documentary varies in style, sometimes its reflective as there are scenes where Ice t is
arranging interviews and trying to get an interviewee's number, sometimes hes recording in the
street recording and telling people to move a different direction, sometimes they can be setting
up a scene. It does follow the traditions of expository for example in the beginning the director
gives explains to the audience why hes making a documentary and why he decided to take a
career path he has. Sometimes there is transitions where there is people performing pre written
verses or freestyles verses over footages of a city. Its also interactive as the director does
perform in the documentary and asks the interviewee questions and they have interesting
conversations as they share anecdotes. The agenda of the documentary is to show the people
that rapping is a hard skill to learn and that its a hard craft to master.
Truth

The reason why the notion of truth is important because you one of the characteristics of a
documentary is to show the truth and they have to remain authentic to what they are showing to
the audience. There is a theory called the hypodermic syringe model which suggest the
audience is passive and that they take in whatever the media shows to them and they take it as
fact. When the audience's watching documentary they always perceive as factual and objective
form of media.

Most genres of film except biography and documentary are fictitious because they are scripted.
Documentaries are not scripted as the audience are expected Nick bloom field shows what he
has experienced as the truth which he dubs the subject truth. In one of his documentary
based on a serial killer who was sentenced to life on death row. He left the camera audio
recording as the prisoner started to reveal a secret to him about the case she was on.
Bloomfield decided to take on his

The truth can be edited in a lot of ways. Theres three types of mediation: selection, focus,
organisation. Selection is when the director wants to portray a subject in a certain, so they will
pick out scenes that portray them to their desire. Focus is when they try to pull the audience's
attention whether it is a bad aspect of a subject or the good side of it. The selection is when the
director puts together clips that would represent the subject in their desired way. Organisation is
when they put clips in sequence in particular order.

The participants in Art of Rap the interviewees are perceived objective way. This is because the
rappers themselves are acting naturally, this is because they know the interviewer personally. In
Gift Through The Shop Exit it was exactly the same as the artist such as Shepard Fairey. The
majority of his screen time Thierry follows him while hes doing his work.

Gift through the shop exit is a bias towards its subject. During the first half they argue that street
art is not vandalism its art, they they do it is repetition and they show the artist work and style
that Thierry finds along his journey. However there is an element of balance as they do show the
polices argument on why it's not art but it's not shown as much as the otherside.

Art of rap is balanced in the sense that it doesnt interview rappers that are current it shows both
young and old for example. They would interview rappers from the eighties like Rakim and Krs
one, to the 90s rappers like Common, to the current artist like Kanye West and Joe Budden
and underground rappers like Immortal Technique and Chino XL.

Unlike the GTTSE were the artist themselves had no permission to access roofs and
other parts of the building. A good example of this is when Banksy and Thierry infiltrated one
of the Disneyland rides and placed a doll on of the pillars. While this was happening Thierry is
filming the whole event and the whole public takes notice. This raises the attention of the
security guards and he gets interrogated by security whilst Banksy makes an escape by
changing clothes in the laventry and joining the public.
Ice T had access to the filming location as seen with the light setup because it would have been
in recording studio, public ground or the rappers houses themselves. In terms of privacy some
of the locations e.i buildings arent mentioned because theyre private property. Dispite
mentioning the city of the rappers.
