Topic: Routines (vocabulary lesson - verbs)

Level: Adult beginners Thursday 9th March

Warmer

Recap previous lesson (5 minute pair work conversations, rotating pairs also allows time for
latecomers to enter!)\

Vocabulary activity

Students work in 3s to complete the gap fill on the board (to share any pre-existing knowledge of
today's vocabulary and to predict meaning). See board work overleaf.

Teacher mimes the actions (eg. wake up, get up, eat breakfast etc.) - students call out the missing
verbs and teacher fills in the gaps on the whiteboard.

Drill pronunciation of the vocabulary (eg. 'get up' and 'I get up' and 'I get up at 8 o clock' etc)

Practice and check recall/pronunciation by miming random actions from the list and eliciting
appropriate vocabulary.

Speaking activity

'Find somebody who' activity students need to mingle and ask each other 'What time do you...?'
(eg. what time do you wake up?) or 'Do you . in the morning/in the evening?' (eg. do you cycle to
work in the morning/do you watch TV in the evening').

Demo the activity and also board and drill the questions before starting. Students are aiming to find
people who have things in common with them (eg. get up at the same time, both watch TV in the
evening etc.)

Feedback ask students to report what things they had in common with one another. Eg. 'I get up at
9 o clock and Cristina also gets up at 9'

Plenary

Ask students what vocabulary was new today and drill one more time the pronunciation, or if there
is time repeat the random mimes and elicit the vocabulary to practice it and test recall once again.

Reflection

A lot of new vocabulary for beginners (a lot of the verbs in the box above are new for them) but
enthusiastic groups can rise to the challenge and enjoy the teacher miming! Also, they CAN guess
some of the answers before they are taught by working together in the first stage (eg. wake up, eat
breakfast). Some answers they can guess as it's similar in Spanish (eg, cycle, finish) but
pronunciation is difficult.

Speaking activity seemed engaging and enabled everyone to put the vocabulary into practice and
personalise it meaningfully to their own routines.

This will need lots of revision before they remember it though!

Note some of the harder stuff I left out for the 8pm group (eg. 'my alarm goes off'- a tough one!)
the earlier group I also gave a few more alternatives such as 'go to the gym' and 'drive to work'.
