Classroom teachers,
I am putting a half sheet of paper in your mailbox about Earth Day for students. Please send
it home TODAY. Below you will find the information you will need for tomorrows Earth Day
celebration. The events I have listed for throughout the day are suggestions, but not all are
required. The information for the school wide celebration is also explained. Please email me if
you have any questions. A special thank you to Melody for helping with the song we will sing
and the sound system.

Thanks,
Lorrie

Earth Day Schedule of Events :

Throughout the day:
Reduce lights or no lights - open blinds to let in the natural light
take class outside for a lesson, read aloud, or journal outside in the
grass or outdoor classroom
Limit photocopies use or go paperless with technology or
whiteboards.
Consider unplugging your iPad or macbook cart for the day to save
energy.
I will have a scale and empty container from the pop top collections in
the front hallway on the counter by the Habit Heroes Board. Feel free
to have your class predict the weight of their pop tops and then find
the actual weight using the scale. If you want to elaborate more,
students can help determine the amount earned from the aluminum
being recycled. Conservit will pay us $0.35 per pound for aluminum
cans. You can leave your pop tops with a post-it and your name and I
will collect them to take to recycling at Conservit at the end of the
week. I will have the grand total of pound and amount earned to
week. I will have the grand total of pound and amount earned to
donate to the Ronald McDonald House after taking them to recycling.
I had a great video I found for Earth Day on Recycling paper and
plastics. It is very informative and really shows the kids what happens
to the materials once it is taken to recycling. I think it would be great
for any grade level, definitely the intermediate grades. Its from
Reading Rainbow and is only 6 minutes long. Please feel free to show
it to your classes too if you have time.
