UNIT I

1. a) Show that the maximum work done by two-row velocity compounded 8

u2 , where u is the blade velocity.
impulse wheel is given by 8 m

b) A steam turbine of De Laval type receives steam at a pressure of 10 bar, dry 8

and saturated and exhausts it 1 bar. There are four nozzles, each of which is
inclined at 20 to the plane of wheel. The average peripheral speed of blades
is 450 m/s. Obtain the best angle for the blades, assuming that the inlet &
outlet angles are the same. What is the approximate power developed if the
area at the throat of each nozzle is 0.24 cm 2? Assume isentropic expansion
through nozzle. Assume blade velocity coefficient = 1.

c) A 50% Reaction turbine running at 400 rpm has the exit angles of the blades 8
as 20 and velocity of steam relative to the blades at the exit is 1.35 times the
mean blade speed. The steam flow rate is 8.33 kg/s and at a particular stage
the specific volume is 1.381 m3/kg. Calculate for this stage.

i) A suitable blade height, assuming the rotor mean diameter 12 times the
blade height, and

ii) The diagram work.

UNIT II

2. a) In a simple constant pressure turbine cycle with maximum to minimum 8

temperature ratio and the turbine & compressor efficiencies t and c
respectively prove that.

Maximum specific work output

CPT1 c

b) In a gas turbine plant, air at 10c & 1 bar is compressed to 4 bar with 8
compression efficiency of 80%. The air is then heated in the regenerator and
combustion chamber till its temperature is raised to 700c and during the
process pressure falls by 0.14 bar. The air then expanded in the turbine and
passes to regenerator which has effectiveness of 75% and causes pressure
drop of 0.14 bar. If turbine efficiency is 85%. determine thermal efficiency of
plant. Assume Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg K and = 1.4 for air and gases.

c) A constant pressure closed cycle turbine plant works between a temperature 8

range of 800c and 30c. The isentropic efficiencies of compressor & turbine
are 80% & 90% respectively. Find the pressure ration of the cycle for
maximum thermal efficiency and maximum specific output of the cycle.
Assume air is used as the working medium. What is the % change in these if
argon is used as the working medium.

UNIT III

3. a) Write a short note on. 8

i) Turboprop

ii) Ramjet.

b) What is thrust augmentation. Explain two methods used for thrust 8

augmentation.

c) A jet propelled unit travels at 180 m/s in air at 0.65 bar and -6c. Air first enters 8
a diffuser in which it is brought to rest relative to the unit and it is then
compressed in a compressor through a pressure ration of 5.8 and fed to
turbine at 925c. The gas expands through the turbine and then through the
nozzle to the atmospheric pressure. The efficiency of diffuser and nozzle is
0.9. The compressor & turbine efficiencies are 0.8, pressure drop in the
combustion chamber is 0.14 bar. Find the fuel air ratio and specific thrust on
the unit. If the inlet cross-section of the diffuser is 0.1 m2. Calculate the total
thrust. Assume CV of fuel as 44141 kJ/kg of fuel.

4. a) Show that the maximum hydraulic efficiency is 50% when jet of water strikes 8
the series of flat plates.

b) A Pelton wheel is working under a gross head of 400 m. The water is supplied 8
through penstock of diameter 1m. & length 4 km from reservoir to Pelton
wheel. The coefficient of friction for penstock is 0.008. The jet of water of
dimeter 150 mm strikes the buckets of the wheel & gets deflected through an
angle of 165c. The relative velocity of water at outlet is reduced by 15% due
to friction between inside surface of bucket & water. If the velocity of buckets
is 0.45 times the jet velocity at inlet & mechanical efficiency as 85%
determine.

i) Power given to the runner.

ii) Shaft power.

iii) Hydraulic efficiency & overall efficiency.

c) The following data relate to a Pelton wheel. 8

Head = 72 meter.
Speed of the wheel = 240 rpm
Shaft power of the wheel = 115 KW
Speed ratio = 0.45
Co-efficient of velocity = 0.98
Overall efficiency = 85%

inlet is 250mm. If the velocity of the flow at inlet is 2m/s, find the mass of water
passing through the turbine per second. Assume 10% area of the flow is
blocked by blade thickness. If the speed of the runner is 210 rpm & guide
blade makes an angle of 10 to the wheel tangent, draw the velocity triangle

required to develop 20600 kW when running at 150 rpm under a head of 21m.
Assuming hydraulic efficiency of 94%, determine the runner vane angles at
inlet & exit at the mean diameter of the vanes. Also determine the runner vane
angles at inlet & exit at two sections near the hub & outer periphery. Assume
