Culture: the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

Culture refers to an appreciation of good literature, music, art, and food. For a biologist,
culture refers to be a colony of bacteria or other microorganisms growing in a nutrient
medium in a laboratory Petri dish.
b. What are the 3 layers of culture?
First layer is shared language, traditions, and beliefs. Second layer is subculture. Third layer
is cultural universals.
c. What is a subculture?
Diverse societies in which people have come from many different parts of the world, they
often retain much of their original cultural traditions. As a result, they are likely to be part
of an identifiable subculture in their new society. The shared cultural traits of subcultures
set them apart from the rest of their society. Ex: Korean American (subculture)
d. List the cultural universals
communicating with a verbal language consisting of a limited set of sounds and
grammatical rules for constructing sentence
using age and gender to classify people (e.g., teenager, senior citizen, woman, man)

Stereotype: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or
thing.

Sex, race, age, sexual orentation, religion and physical ability.
a. What is one of the stereotypes youve heard of that is listed in the 1992 gender study?
Males were typically characterized as adventurous, powerful, domineering and
independent. Females, on the other hand, were characterized as sentimental, submissive
and superstitious
b. Why is mass media considered significant to stereotyping?
Stereotyping is a product of culture, therefore, mass media have a strong influence in
supporting and tearing down stereotypical characteristics.
c. Why are stereotypes functional?
We trade-off for simplification, which can lead to inaccuracy and we are often unaware of
this deduction
d. What is the most influential factor in stereotyping? Why?
Prejudice. The selectivity of a person's perception result in people seeing what they expect
to see when they come in contact with members of an ethnic group they view with
prejudice.

Family dynamics: the patterns of relating, or interactions, between family members.
6. According to this definition, what are your family dynamics?
A very argumentative family. We are always debating or disagreeing about something, but underneath
all that, there is love. Everyone is close, a little too close. Everyone plays a major role in the house.
