MODERN HAIR TRANSPLANTS 101 : Before and 9 Months After ARTAS FUE Hair Transplant with Dr.

Before and 9 Months After ARTAS FUE Hair Transplant with Dr. Bauman

Restoring one’s confdence, self-esteem and a youth- ful healthy and full head of hair is a desire of many who

have experienced hair loss. When it comes to restoring their hair however, most remain deeply afraid of the “T” word – Transplant. Thankfully, artifcial looking “hair plugs,” visible scars and uncomfortable invasive procedures are a thing of the past. With today’s com- fortable techniques and a surgeon’s ar- tistic skills, hair transplants consistently produce permanent, undetectable, natural-looking results literally all the way around. This is largely due to the no-linear scar Follicular-Unit Extraction or “FUE” technique, which completely transformed the hair restoration in- dustry and has become a force behind the increased demand for hair trans- plant procedures in men and women. FUE is a less-invasive method for harvesting hair follicles and “follicu- lar units” individually, and has virtu- ally eliminated the antiquated linear or ‘strip’ harvest approach to transplanta- tion. The meticulous harvesting process has been made more efcient through robotics, semi-automatic devices and well-trained surgical teams. ARTAS, the frst FDA-approved ro- botic-assisted hair transplant harvest- ing system became available in the past couple years, and is being used in a small but growing number of clin- ics. Other hand-held surgical devices, like NeoGraft FUE, also help doctors perform a hair transplant surgery with remarkable precision and less trauma when it comes to extracting the grafts from the scalp. Artistic plan- ning and placement of the harvested hair follicles by the physician and his team allows for a completely natural, permanent restoration of living and growing hair. FUE is also a great option for “touch-up” procedures for patients who had transplants years ago—and

even for those who were previously told they don’t have enough donor hair to have another procedure. Here is a closer look at these two advanced FUE techniques:

NEOGRAFT FUE The FDA-approved NeoGraft FUE hand- held device can be used to extract in- dividual hair follicles from the donor area located at the back of the per- son’s head – which are then implanted into the bald areas of the scalp. This means no scalpels, sutures, or staples are used while harvesting and no long, linear scar. The FUE hair transplant technique has been available for more than a decade, but prior to NeoGraft, it was too time-consuming and expen- sive for most patients. ARTAS ROBOTIC SYSTEM The FDA-cleared ARTAS robot is an ex- citing state-of-the-art medical device that assists hair transplant surgeons by helping to safely and efectively ex- tract intact hair follicles for transplan- tation using the FUE technique. The robot’s micron-level precision allows patients to beneft from an unprec- edented level of safety; efcacy and comfort during their hair transplant procedure. The system features preci- sion robotics—utilizing special cameras and software to detect and analyze follicular units—calculating the har- vesting of follicles based on specifc al- gorithms programmed by the surgeon. THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTISTRY With all of these technological im- provements, one of the biggest problems with hair transplants that remains is the fact that many unquali- fed, untrained and non-certifed doc- tors ofer this procedure. The risks for their patients include increased discomfort, surgical complications, infections, scarring, poor density, un- natural looking results and no viable long-term “master plan.” When looking for a hair transplant surgeon, make sure you consult with an experienced minimally-invasive hair restoration physician—someone who specializes exclusively in the medical diagnosis, treatment and tracking of hair loss and who performs FUE hair

transplantation on a daily basis. The bottom line is, regardless of how the hair follicles are harvested, the critical step for achieving natural, great looking results, is the artistry and skill of the surgeon involved. Pa- tients, therefore, should not choose their surgeon based solely on the tools they use, but more so on their artistic ability and experience in the feld.
