Memorials may be purchased at: Todd Motor Sales, Inc., Main St., Eldred, PA. tf DOLLARS AND SENSE By David Uffington Consumers Bailing on Bailout Program The government’s Making Home Affordable mortgage bailout programs haven’t been as successful as was expected. The programs were designed to lower mortgage payments, allowing homeowners to keep their homes and avoid foreclosure. As it’s turning out, the vast majority of homeowners who get a lowered mortgage end up defaulting on their mortgages anyway. There are quite a few reasons for the failure of the programs. --Banks weren’t initially asking for proof of income, automatically putting homeowners into a trial program. Once paperwork was completed during the trial period, it was discovered that many homeowners had too much income to qualify and were taken out of the program. (This happened with nearly half a million homeowners.) --Paperwork was lost or homeowners failed to send in required documents. --Homeowners are giving up and selling their homes. (Those who agree to a short sale or just give the house back to the bank qualify for $3,000 in moving expenses.) --Homeowners haven’t been able to get through the trial program successfully (payments have to be made on time) before the new modification deal is final. -- Even with mortgage modification, homeowners still have other debts to juggle. Not only did they have late mortgage payments, but other bills had stacked up as well before they applied for help. Those bills must still be paid. The number of people applying to the programs has plunged, but a new one, starting in August, could encourage thousands to seek help: the Unemployment Program. Some of the eligibility requirements include: • Mortgage must have originated prior to Jan. 1, 2009. • Home must be the principal residence. • The mortgage wasn’t already modified by one of the programs. • Mortgage payments are late, but not more than three months. • The payment is more than 31 percent of the homeowner’s income. WAREHOUSE PRICING
We did the homework for you, and can’t wait to see you here at Paul Brown’s! Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Brown’s! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

We were swimming one day and a heel went through a weak spot. I saw the water lowering. The hole was less than an inch, but the water was running out fast. I ran inside and got the repair kit (a plastic patch that comes with water epoxy). The kit was about $6 at Wal-Mart but well worth it! If I had to run to the pool store that is near our home, the pool would have lost a lot of water, and the kit would’ve been double that price! -S. in Rochester, NY

JULY CITIZEN OF THE MONTH Written by Administrator The July citizen of the month is BOB BROWN of Brown’s Otto Service Center in Duke Center. Bob, originally from Farmer’s Valley, moved to Buffalo for awhile. When an opening occurred in Duke Center, Bob moved back and worked for Bruce Milliron. He eventually bought the business on January 1, 2000, and is still there today. Bob feels Duke Center is a great place to raise a family. He is very involved in Old Home Days. Bob is in charge of the car show. This is a huge endeavor, and Bob has done a fantastic job of it. Bob enjoys racing go-carts and stock cars. He helps people with their cars when needed. Bob is married to Cheri, and has two boys; Nickolas 4, and Lee 13. Bob would love to see the people in the town come together and take care of each other. He believes in treating others the way you want to be treated – a rule we all should follow! In the future, Bob would like to see a place for the kids to go for entertainment and to hang out such as a pool or community center. While we look up to Bob, he looks up to Sonny Marshall. Sonny, he feels, is a righteous, good man and a man to be admired. We thank you Bob, for moving to our community and being involved! f

TRAVELING TOYS FOR TOTS Here is a tip that has worked well for me in the past. When traveling to see family, it is hard to take toys along for small children, especially when flying. After you arrive at your destination, visit the local thrift shop. You can buy many inexpensive toys, books, puzzles, etc. When it is time to leave, return the items to the thrift shop and get a receipt for a charitable gift that you can deduct on your taxes. -Sally

TRAPPING FRUIT FLIES I got fruit flies from my plants. I used a coffee mug with a half-inch of orange juice in it and put a coffee filter over the top with a small slit in the bottom of it. They flew in but not out. -Anne COOL SUMMER SPECIAL We store beverage glasses in the freezer door. We always have a frosty, chilled glass when we want a refreshing cold drink! -Ivy Maria

This photo was loaned to the Moneysaver years ago by Mrs. George Palmer of Eldred. In the photo are Mr. & Mrs. Gardner D. Vaughn & son Franklin of Eldred, PA. They were proprietors of the grocery store for 38 years, where Isaman’s Grocery store was later located. Mrs. Palmer says she worked there at the time (about 1930) but was ill the day this photo was taken. Thank you to our many readers who responded to this “Remember When”. Marlene Burrows let us know that this store was located on Rte. 346, on the right, going from Eldred to Prentisvale. It is near the Windfall Road intersection and is currently a residence. Gary Southard added that his Aunt Maxine Crandall used to work there. Pat Prescott said that after Gardner Vaughn, it was owned by another Vaughn and Isamans, later was a business called American Awning and Insulation. Leon Hillyard said he believed it was in the 1960’s when Eddie Vaughn owned the store. Gerald Vaughn of Eldred, great-nephew of Gardner Vaughn, supplied us with this information....Gardner Vaughn owned the store from 1930’s through mid ‘50’s; he sold to Julius Brown who owned it from 1950’s through mid ‘60’s; he sold to William Isaman who owned it through the late ‘60’s; he sold to Edward and Marie Vaughn who owned it through mid ‘70’s; they sold to George and Linda Beckham who owned it at the time that the main part of the store burned. The remaining store was then made into a residence. Later, American Awning bought the land and put up a new building, which is a residence today. Gerald added that Gardner Vaughn was blind since he had scarlet fever as a child. He and Gerald’s grandfather traveled throughout the country in a horse-drawn wagon selling clove salve when they were younger and were gone for months at a time. Franklin Vaughn, the boy in the picture, resided in Lock Haven until passing away last year.

If you are planning to invest, determine at what level of risk you both are comfortable. •Start saving and investing for your retirement. The earlier you start, the less you may have to save later because you will have the advantage of longterm, tax deferred growth potential as you accumulate retirement assets. You are never too young to consider establishing an Individual Retirement Account or participating in a company-sponsored retirement plan. •Make a will. Without one, a court decides how to divide your estate, which includes your assets and property. If you and your spouse already have a will, you may want to update it to include new beneficiaries. •Talk to a profes-

Yours, Mine, Ours...Taking Your Financial Vows Jointly?
(NU) Congratulations, you’re getting married! So have you discussed who will maintain the household budget and who will make the major investment decisions? And, how do you plan to file your taxes— individually or jointly? According to financial planners, newlyweds spend more time planning their wedding than they do their finances. However, almost immediately after newlyweds say, “I do,” they discover how important the role of money is to the rela-

The Diamond Dilemma
Choosing the perfect engagement ring is not an easy task. With so many sizes and styles to choose from, it is hard to pick the one you’d like to wear for the rest of your life. Beverly Clark, author of Planning A Wedding To Remember, explains the criteria to consider when selecting a diamond: Color- The clearer the diamond, the greater its value. Diamonds are graded on a scale: The greater the degree of color in the stone, the lower the stone’s value, with the exception of very rare colored diamonds which are extremely valuable. Clear or colorless stones are referred to as per-

tionship. But, with planning and discipline, couples can make sure that differences over money won’t change “I do” to “I don’t.” No matter what your age, Fidelity Investments® suggests that newlyweds consider these simple guidelines: •Develop a budget by listing income and expenses. Make a commitment to save or invest and stick to it. If you factor your saving into your budget, you will give saving the same importance as monthly bills. •Determine and prioritize your joint savings goals. It’s difficult to implement a savings plan without having a

specific goal to save toward. •Discuss all areas of your finances before making any financial decisions. As singles, you probably made your own decisions about money. But as a couple, you need to consult each other when it comes to major financial decisions. •Take an inventory of the financial assets life insurance, bank accounts, investments and property - each person brings into the marriage. Decide if it makes sense to keep these assets separate or combine them into joint policies, accounts and property. •Set up a rainy day fund in a readily accessible account for emergencies or unexpected bills. Experts recommend saving the equivalent of three months gross salary in an interest-bearing checking account, savings account or money market account. •Out of sight out of mind. If you need help saving, many financial institutions can arrange with you and your company to automatically

fect. Cut- Accuracy in cutting is essential to the beauty and sparkle of the diamond. The stones are proportioned and faceted to maximize the brilliance through their crowns. The brilliant or round cut is the most common. Other shapes include oval, pear, marquise, emerald cut and heart-shaped. Clarity- This is the term used to describe the degree of inclusions when the stone is magnified ten times. Inclusions are interior or exterior flaws. If they are large and noticeable without a magnifying glass, they will affect the beauty of the stone, otherwise they will only affect the value. Flawless or perfect stones with no imperfections are obviously the most valuable and expensive. Carats- This is the size of the diamond. Color, cut and clarity determine the per-carat value. A higher-quality, smaller diamond may be worth more than a lower-quality, larger xxxx

involved in freezing the cake are the same. The best cakes to freeze are chocolate, carrot, almond and hazelnut. When freezing your cake, be sure to take off the sugar flowers. Place the layer immediately into the freezer (unwrapped at this point). After an hour or two, the icing should be frozen. Wrap the cake loosely in several layers of plastic and place it in a cake box. Wrap the cake box in plastic or freezer paper and place it into the freezer. When it comes time to defrost the cake, immediately remove the wrapping and let it sit in the refrigerator for 48 hours then at room temperature for a couple of hours. A word of warning: Don’t store your cake in a frost-free freezer-the constant defrosting will draw the moisture out of the cake. tions,” just won’t do. Your toast should be at least three to four minutes long, so you’re definitely going to have to put some thought into it. Most toasts generally consist of four parts, a purpose, a thank you, a personal story or two, and the toast itself. The first and second parts are easy. All you need to do is introduce yourself, explain your relationship to the groom, indicate that you are there to offer your congratulations to the couple and thank the wedding hosts. The third part is a bit trickier. You will need to get more personal and tell a story or two that reveals something about the couple. Once you get through this phase, the fourth part is a breeze. You simply wrap up the toast by offering your congratulations and best wishes to the couple. Now that you are more familiar with the basic parts of a toast, you can start to compose yours. Try to keep what you have to say brief but meaningful. There’s nothing worse than listening to a 20-minute speech full of insignificant ramblings.

Cheers!
By Tresa Erickson Congratulations. You’ve been asked to be the best man at your brother’s wedding. You’re honored and look forward to almost all of your duties, except for making the first toast at the wedding reception. You don’t have a way with words and you definitely don’t like speaking in public. The last time you gave a speech was 10 years ago in your college speech class. Relax. Making a toast is not as hard as you might think. Just follow these tips and you’re sure to do well. Although it might be more to your liking, standing up and mumbling, “Congratula-

Use examples to back up your remarks. Don’t just say, “The couple is great together,” and leave it at that. Tell a story that illustrates how well suited the two are for each other. Be specific and keep your audience in mind. Identify the woman you keep referring to as the groom’s aunt and steer clear of inside jokes. Not everyone will be privy to them. Keep the tone of your toast light and refrain from saying anything negative. Don’t kid around and call the groom “a slob.” Negative remarks, no matter if they are said in jest or not, are not a good way to commemorate a wedding day. Once you’ve written your toast, invite a friend over and deliver it to them. Get their feedback and take their suggestions seriously. Make any revisions necessary and then practice it often. Practice in front of the mirror and in front of your friends and family. Use note cards if you need them, and if people seem to have a hard time hearing you, see if you can have a microphone available at the reception.

A reader wrote that she would like to see Susan Sarandon play Bette Davis in a film bio. The question is, “Would Susan like to portray Bette in a film?” ... And believe it: Mickey Rourke said he would prefer the word “Animal” on his passport rather than the word “Actor.” So much for loving your profession.

***** “Broke, USA: From Pawnshops to Poverty, Inc. -How the Working Poor Became Big Business” by Gary Rivlin Reviewed by Larry Cox It’s no secret that many hardworking Americans are deep in debt, and some are just a paycheck or two from being homeless and on the street. Many dig themselves into a financial hole without even realizing it. Case in point, Tommy Myers, a 73-year-old retiree from Dayton, Ohio. Myers and his wife, Marcia, bought a modest home for $60,000. Their monthly payment was $526, which covered the mortgage, taxes and insurance. All went well until Marcia became ill. While wondering how they were going to cover her mounting medical bills, Myers was contacted by a man he sarcastically refers to as his “guardian angel,” a salesman for the consumer-finance giant Household Finance Corporation. The fasttalking salesman gulled Myers into a new mortgage that he claimed would solve their financial problems. With its hidden charges and confusing terms, what the new mortgage actually did was bump up the payment to more than $1,400 per month, which led to foreclosure. Myers and his wife, who now live in a seedy trailer park, are fairly typical of the casualties brought about by shady subprime mortgages. Author Gary Rivlin, who has written for The New York Times, Newsweek and Wired, investigates the flourishing poverty business in his new book, “Broke, USA.” It is a disturbing look at trends that have become commonplace in America since the Great Crash of 2008. Rivlin says the tough economic times have become an opportunity to expand and grow for mercenary entrepreneurs who have taken advantage of an era of deregulation to devise high-priced products to fleece the credit-hungry working poor. These include instant tax refunds, payday loans and check-cashing outlets. If you’ve wondered why our country is in such an economic mess, this gut-wrenching expose provides many of the answers. NASCAR This Week Bobby the Iron Man
Bobby Labonte, who won the (then) Winston Cup championship a decade ago, is now 31st in the Sprint Cup standings. Labonte left TRG Motorsports and finished 16th at Daytona in a Chevy entered by James Finch. The future is murky. What’s a nice guy like Labonte doing in a place like this? Former NASCAR champion He’s a champion (both the Cup and Bobby Labonte is still running what is now Nationwide). He’s even strong at age 46. (John Clark/ been a runner-up in both series. NASCAR This Week photo) Labonte has won 21 Cup races and 26 poles. He’s 46 years old. “Our car was good for about 20 laps,” he said after the Coke Zero 400. “We kept track position for a while, then we got a ‘wave-around’ (back on the lead lap). We got involved in ‘the Big One’ (a 20-car pileup), and that was unfortunate for the team. It took out a lot of good cars, but we were lucky enough to not have too bad a damage to keep us from running strong at the end. All in all, it was OK.” Labonte will once again be in the No. 09 Chevrolet in Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. After 11 seasons at Joe Gibbs Racing, Labonte moved to Petty Enterprises for three years, finishing 21st, 18th and 21st in the Cup point standings from 2006 through 2008. In 2009, he began the season with the Hall of Fame team, then moved to Kevin Buckler’s TRG team late in the year. Most would consider a victory in the 2000 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the single biggest victory of Labonte’s career. He has won six times at Atlanta Motor Speedway during his career, coupled with three victories each at Michigan and Pocono. Labonte was the Grand Marshal of the Coke Zero 400 and carried Coke Zero sponsorship in the race, which marked the 600th start of his Cup career. He is 20th all-time in that category, which is led by Richard Petty (1,185 races). “Wow, that’s a lot of racing,” said Labonte. “It’s just an honor and a privilege to be able to have that many races under my belt. There have been so many people who have helped me get to this point in my career. “I’m not racing just to hit milestones or anything like that. Like I’ve said before, I want to win and be competitive. Hitting 600 starts, it’s great, and hopefully, there will be a lot more, too.” Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at nascar_thisweek@yahoo.com. Sausage-Pepper Kabobs Grilled smoked sausage and fresh vegetables make a great light summer or holiday meal. To save time, these kabobs can be prepped a day before serving, wrapped and refrigerated. 1/4 cup olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed with press 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Salt and pepper 2 large (8 to 10 ounces each) onions 2 medium (4 to 6 ounces each) purple or green peppers 3 medium (4 to 6 ounces each) red peppers 2 pounds fully cooked kielbasa (smoked Polish sausage) 12 (12-inch) metal or bamboo skewers 1. If using bamboo skewers, soak skewers in cold water at least 30 minutes to prevent burning. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling on medium. 2. In small bowl, combine oil, garlic, oregano, 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Let stand while you cut onions, peppers and sausages into 1-inch chunks. 3. Thread peppers, 2 at a time and alternating with onion and sausage, onto skewers. Brush skewers with oil mixture. 4. Place on hot grill grate; cover and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until browned, turning occasionally. Place on platter to serve. Serves 12. (c) 2010 Hearst Communications, Inc. All rights reserved

PAW’S CORNER- By Sam Mazzotta
Know the Signs of a Sick Cat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to Frustrated in Philadelphia concerning a cat soiling on the top of her bed. I agree that urinary tract issues could be the problem. Something else to consider is diabetes. I had a cat that suddenly starting urinating on piles of clothes and on top of beds. He also had lost weight. Watching the cat, I saw him “camping out” over the water bowl often, which caused massive clots in the litter and wherever he went. Obsessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, so I took him to the vet, and we are now giving him insulin shots twice a day. Hence, the problem with going outside the box has ceased. -- Jeanne M., via e-mail DEAR JEANNE: Thanks! That is definitely another possibility to consider. Cat owners, if at any time your cat shows a change in behavior or begins repeatedly doing undesirable things that it didn’t do before -such as going outside the litter box, eating or drinking changes, or hissing at seemingly nothing -- bring your cat to the veterinarian. Other signs of ill health in a cat include a dirty or matted coat -- cats are obsessive about cleaning themselves, so this can be a big sign of a problem -- wheezing, drooling or lethargy. And if your cat just doesn’t

"And with Him they crucify two thieves; the one on His right hand, and the other on His left. And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And He was numbered with the transgressors." To the Reader:Some of our Two Minutes articles were written many years ago by Pastor C. R. Stam for publication in newspapers. When many of these articles were later compiled in book form, Pastor Stam wrote this word of explanation in the Preface: "It should be borne in mind that the newspaper column, Two Minutes With the Bible, has now been published for many years, so that local, national and international events are discussed as if they occurred only recently. Rather than rewrite or date such articles, we have left them just as they were when first published. This, we felt, would add to the interest, especially since our readers understand that they first appeared as newspaper articles." We hope that you'll agree that while some of the references in these articles are dated, the spiritual truths taught therein are timeless. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • You might be surprised to learn that it was theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, one of the bestknown scientists of all time, who made the following sage observation: "If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them line the bottom with a plastic bag and do the whole back yard. Tie the bag and dispose of it in the trash. Store-bought scoops can cost as much as $20!• "I have a lot of plastic film containers around, since I still like to take regular photos. But I have found a use for them that crosses over into digital. I store a couple batteries in a container and stick it in my digital camera case. That way I always have a fresh refill ready to go." -- P.E. in Massachusetts• After you have addressed a package using a felt-tip marker, either rub it with a white candle or cover it with tape to protect it from rain. • A great camping tip: "To keep ants off your camp table, bring four clean tuna or cat-food cans. Fill them about threefourths of the way with water and stick them under the table's legs. The ants can't climb up the legs." -K.R. in Georgia • Keep tablecloths and cloth napkins from creasing by rolling them around a cardboard tube and securing the ends with fabric ties. Store in a drawer. • Clean the screens on your patio or window with a carpet scrap. Cut a carpet scrap to fit a block of wood, nail it down and use it to clean the screens. NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS by Cornelius R. Stam "And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And He was numbered with the transgressors" (Mark 15:28). The progressive fulfillment of this passage from Isaiah 53 is the amazing story of our Lord's three baptisms. First, this prophecy must be applied to our Lord's incarnation. Born a babe at Bethlehem, He was baptized into the human race, becoming, not merely one with us, but one of us, a true human being, though still also "very God." This is how He was first "numbered with the transgressors." Later the Lord was baptized again, this time with water, by John the Baptist. John's baptism was unto "repentance for the remission of sins" and those who responded came to his baptism "confessing their sins" (Mark 1:4,5). Little wonder that John at first refused to

baptize this sinless One, saying: "I have need to be baptized of Thee, and comest Thou to me?" But the Lord insisted, saying: "Thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness" (Matt. 3:13-15). Thus our Lord joined repentant sinners in baptism and was, in this practical way, "numbered with the transgressors." But after His baptism into the human race and His subsequent baptism with water, our Lord spoke of a third baptism, saying: "I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I straitened [Lit., "What a spot I am in"] till it be accomplished!" (Luke 12:50). This third baptism was, of course, His death at Calvary, where He was baptized into God's judgment upon sin in order that He might save us from it. Finally, then, Isaiah 53:12 was fulfilled, for it is in connection with His death at Calvary that Mark 15:27,28 says:

more fairy tales." • On average, a man's beard grows about a half-inch every month. • Do you suffer from coprolalia? I would hope not! If you're a word deconstructionist and up on your Greek, you might be able to figure out that coprolalia means an uncontrollable use of obscene language, since "copro" means "dung" and "lalia" means "chatter" or "babble." • Marilyn Monroe's iconic film "Some Like It Hot" (which in 2000 was named the greatest American comedy film of all time by the American Film Institute) was originally titled "Not Tonight Josephine!" • The next time you have jury duty and want to get out of it, you might want to keep this in mind: A judge in Liverpool, England, dismissed a man from the jury when fellow jurors complained about the fleas in his beard. • At one time, the Catholic Church considered it sinful to eat a hot dog. • If you're ever visiting Egypt and asking for directions, remember that in that country, "upstream" means south. • It's probably fair to say that people have been enjoying mixed alcoholic beverages for hundreds of years, but the word "cocktail" wasn't in general use until 1888, when it was printed for the first time, in a bartender's manual. • In Connecticut in the 17th century, it was illegal to smoke more than one cigarette a day, and that one had to be smoked at home. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • This is an easy do-it-yourself project: Cut a bleach or laundry detergent bottle in half. Use the handle to scoop pet poop, and the bottom as a receptacle. You can

The swarm was said to be so thick that it blocked out the sun and one could shovel the grasshoppers with a scoop. • On July 28, 1945, a United States B-25 Mitchell bomber crashes into the Empire State Building, killing 14 people. The freak accident was caused by heavy fog. The bomber was flying low, seeking better visibility, when it came upon the Chrysler Building. The plane swerved to avoid the building, but the move sent it straight into the north side of the Empire State Building, near the 79th floor. • On July 31, 1964, Ranger 7, an unmanned U.S. lunar probe, takes the first close-up images of the moon -- 4,308 in total. The images were 1,000 times clearer than anything ever seen through Earth-bound telescopes. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Jill Jackson HOLLYWOOD ... It wouldn’t surprise me one little bit if one of these days Oprah runs for president of the United States. Each day her name gets bigger and bigger, both in show business and just plain business. So now all we do is sit back, enjoy her shows and wait to see what happens next. Interesting that we don’t see more of, and hear more about, Stedman Graham. I’m certain he is watching from the sidelines, although I’m not sure of where. And how’s this for a name? Chiara Mastroianni. She is the daughter of actors Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, and quite a fine young actress. In August she receives the Excellence award for outstanding international actors at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Some of her films are “Pret-a-Porter,” “My Favorite Season” and “A Christmas Tale.” You may be seeing ex-hobbit Elijah Wood in a TV series if the pilot he made sells. It is titled “Wilfred” and is about a guy, the girl next door and a mixed-breed dog. Meanwhile, young Mr. Wood has been busy. He is in “The Romantics” with Katie Holmes and Anna Paquin, and is doing voiceovers for several projects. As for his private life, I don’t have any “skinny” on that. Meryl Streep is looking at “The Iron Lady,” a biopic about longtime British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Oscarwinner Jim Broadbent is considering taking on the role of her husband. The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career during the 17 days preceding the Falklands War. As we have said before, Streep is considered the best femme actress in the business, so this saga of Thatcher is sure to be a winner. *** (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
