SUMMER 10

ISSUE 10

Meet the team
Les Hopper Science Publisher I’m Les and I look after all the science books that Oxford University Press publishes for schools in the UK. This means I spend time talking to teachers and students to learn about what resources they need, and then with all our internal departments and external partners to find out how we can produce the best possible support. I joined Oxford University Press from another well known educational publisher in 2009, and I am very pleased to be part of such a committed and talented team. As someone who has always been interested in science and trained as a scientist, I am delighted to have the chance to work on a project as groundbreaking and popular as Twenty First Century Science. Outside of work I enjoy cooking and reading and like to get outdoors as much as I can, whether cycling or walking.

What’s in the Early Start Class Packs?
We know that a single copy of some student pages isn’t much use to you with whole classes to teach, so we’re making the student pages available in class packs. Each pack will contain 25 copies of the student materials for B1, C1 and P1, all rewritten and reviewed specifically for the new specifications. However, there will be a small cost to order these extra packs just to cover our costs but any money paid for them will be taken off your orders of the complete resources when they’re published so you will not be out of pocket.

We’ve got help and support for early starters
We’ve been out talking to schools about the development of the new specifications and teaching resources. Lots of people we’ve spoken to have reiterated that many of you are planning to start teaching the new specifications from this September, rather than next year, and want to start the new course with new resources matched to the new specifications. Oxford University Press is working alongside OCR and the project team of USYEG and Nuffield to provide the most comprehensive package of support and resources for the course possible. And as part of this we are offering schools FREE Early Start Packs to help you get started with the course. We’re planning to make these available for you to teach with in September as soon as the specifications are accredited, with electronic versions available online as soon as we can before that.

New GCSE science specifications for 2011
We thought we’d give you a bit of information to update you on how the new GCSE science specifications for 2011 affects Twenty First Century Science. Mary Whitehouse, Project Director of Twenty First Century Science, University of York outlines what you need to know at this stage… The Twenty First Century Science project team are working with OCR to develop new specifications to match the Ofqual criteria for GCSE Science from 2011. OCR will submit the specifications for approval by Ofqual in April 2010. At that point they will also publish the draft specifications for schools to help with planning. However until specifications are finally approved in August 2010, all the information you read here and elsewhere is ‘subject to approval’. The new criteria requires us to move some material between Science and Additional Science in all three subjects. Apart from the changes required by Ofqual we shall limit other changes to places where a clarification of specifications statements will help both teachers and examiners.
