Former NFLer to perform at Pine Grove Church on July 25
Ben Utecht ... His name may sound familiar, but not in Christian music. Formerly a starting tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts, this Super Bowl winning player is known for his faith both on and off the field. Ben’s debut album with Stylos Records introduced him as a singer and as a musician to the world. Full of passion, depth and an insight to the struggles of faith and life, his songs provoke an honesty and sensitivity that tap directly into the heartstrings of our relationship to Christ. Collaborating with friends like Jeremy Camp, Sandi Patty, Nathan Nockels and Mark Harris, Ben is a fresh new wordsmith, musician and singer, from an unlikely arena. Pine Grove Community Church (The Tent Church) is excited to welcome Ben to the 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 25 at 6 p.m.. The church is located at 8775 E. 88th St in Howard City, MI. A free will offering will be received in support of the Summer Concert Series. For more information, please contact Pine Grove Community at www.pinegrovechurch.com or call 231-937-5250.

TC’s Rabid Goldfish, State Soccer Finalist
Tri-County’s AYSO U12 girls team, with the assistance of 2 players from Grant’s U12 team, Jenna Dietz and Katelyn Rodriguez, finish 2ndplace in a nail biting match against the Cannons from Shelby, Utica and Macomb, 2-1. This finalist match was a climax of the 19 team bracket from AYSO teams from all over the state. TC triumphed over the Fuchsia Fury of St. Clair Shores, the Firecrackers of Richmond, and the Blazing Blue Rays of Warren in bracket play. The semi finals were against our own Lakeview Wildcats. Tri-County redeemed themselves after losing to Lakeview June 13th, in the area tournament, held in Lakeview. (TC had lost to Lakeview in sudden death overtime 2 to 1.) This day, Tri County beat Lakeview 2 to 1. The semi-final game’s winning shot was a perfectly placed corner kick by Katelyn Rodriquez to a header by Lena Thompson. The finals against Cannons of Macomb were very exciting. Jami Karhoff, cocoach commented, “If we had 2 more minutes, we might have tied the game and went into overtime”, as it was TC ran out of time with the momentum on their side. “The first quarter we were outplayed”, said Coach Kathy Thompson, but “the second quarter we held our own”. The third quarter TC was down 0-2 . The fourth quarter, Tri County’s win-

Cub Scouts have successful fundraiser
The Cub Scout Pack #3073 of Howard City wants to graciously thank all the businesses and people who made our first fundraiser event a success. On June 26th the Cub Scouts teamed up with Getting’ Picky to put on an event which would help support our local pack and Helping Hands Food Bank. The event included a live auction, a 50/50 raffle and concessions. For most of the parents of the pack, this experience was a first so the uncertainty was high but by the end of the night, they all had smiles on their faces! The pack decided to make a monetary contribution to their charter sponsor, The United Methodist Church and also to Helping Hands. Helping Hands will also receive the non-perishable items collected on the night of the concert. The remaining funds will be used for outings over the next year for the boys. The power we have as a community is truly awesome. The parents of the pack are grateful to those who gave their time, effort and hard earned dollars to support our boys. Thank you for your strength.

ning attitude resurfaced and the girls were on fire. They scored quickly in the fourth quarter and then had multiple fast breaks and amazing defensive stops. Hannah Drouin was an outstanding keeper for the Rabid Goldfish. The almost impenetrable defensive line was lead by Peyton Karhoff, Dani Stewart, Kelsey Geers, and Katelyn Rodriguez. The midfield, one of the fastest and most formidable of all bracket play, was played by the unstopping energy of Arianna Imhoff, Kaitlyn Olson, and Anna Overbeek. The

impressive offensive lines utilized the striking power of Jenna Dietz, Maddie Wall, Savannah Wilson and Lena Thompson. The State Tournament, held in Linden, Michigan over 3 days had 104 teams from all over the state, with over 1500 players. Tri County’s Rabid Goldfish were one of three teams sent from TC to the AYSO State Tournament. Tri County also sent a U10 boy’s team and a U14 girl’s team. Although both teams played hard, neither made it out of bracket play. Brett Karhoff, the Regional

Commissioner of Tri County’s AYSO soccer program, is very pleased with showing of the Tri County athletes and families. “The caliber of play by the Tri County teams, and the attitudes and support of the parents, is a wonderful representation of our community”. He also wanted to remind readers that now is the time to sign up for Fall Soccer. Go to tricountyayso. clubspaces.com as soon as possible (ages 4 through 19, boys and girls, don’t forget the VIP program available for special needs players as well.)

just around the corner from the Veterans Home. “Hokie Pokie”, as he is affectionately known to friends, takes care of the Veterans’ fishing needs at no cost to the Veterans. He has been helpful with the out of pocket expenses from the owners and staff of the Rustic Sports Shop in Howard City. They have donated items and reduced its price of some goods to help Bill fulfill his goal of getting Veterans to the fishing hole. This year, the Tri County Eagles #4467 in Sand Lake along with the Ladies Auxiliary and the Eagle Riders, have joined with Bill in his efforts to serve the Veterans. Each of them have pledged money to help defray “Hokie Pokie’s” expenses. If any of you would like to help, you can donate poles, and fishing supplies that might be lying around the house by dropping them off to the Eagles Club on Lake Street in Sand Lake. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Compromised Freedoms/ Constitution Class offered
TO THE EDITOR: Soft, warm breezes blowing through my windows. Dappled sunlight blinking across the lawn. Birds and insects singing their summer songs. The work week blends into enjoyable weekend plans. Summer holidays spent with family and friends. Parades and cookouts gathered with neighbors. While this great nation has savored life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, there has been an undeniable shift in our foundation. We, the People, have been working, playing, raising our families, and serving those around us who are in need. Yet, We, the People, feel unsure, off-balance, and somehow less safe. Compromise. Could that be the shift I feel? Compromise is to weaken or give up one’s principles guided by self-interest. Before I began waking up to the compromise in Lansing and Washington DC, I believed Congressmen made decisions based on party platforms. I believed the foundation for party platforms was the Constitution. These platforms were to be the foundational principles from which our representatives made decisions. Based on voting records, I can’t tell the difference between platforms or the parties. Representation seems based on the self-interested principles of getting re-elected. Our representation, as well as our Freedom, has been compromised. I have to admit all fingers shouldn’t point only at our politicians. An uninformed vote is worse than no vote at all. How many elections have I gone to the voting booth uninformed? Too many. I realized recently that I had never read entirely through the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. It has been said: If we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. MOnTE AnD AnDREA BlACHFORD newaygo NOTE: Let’s join together and learn our Founder’s original words. Together, let us secure our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness by tapping into the spirit of our Founding Fathers. We have surrendered enough of our Freedoms. We will have a Constitution 101 Class: The Bill of Rights on Thursday, July 29th from 7 to 9 p.m.. Call 231-652-2779 for more information.

Reader thanks schools for MiPHY participation
TO THE EDITOR: The Drug Free Montcalm Collaborative (which includes The Coalition to Prevent Underage Drinking and Tobacco Free Montcalm) would like to thank all the schools in Montcalm County who participated with the Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) survey this year. The State of Michigan has developed the MiPHY survey and offered it at no charge for local school participation. Seventh, ninth and eleventh graders throughout local school districts have the opportunity to participate in the MiPHY survey every other year. Results of the MiPHY provide a picture of youth risk and pro-social behaviors including substance use, violence, physical activity, nutrition, as well as risk and protective factors. Data from the MiPHY survey can help local schools, health departments, coalitions, agencies and community groups develop data-driven programs in prevention and health promotion. With data driven programs we have greater opportunities to secure funding and measure the effectiveness of programs. The participation of the local Montcalm County schools is another example of how, working together, we can impact the health and well-being of youth and the communities we live in. To these schools, thank you. For more information on the MiPHY or Drug Free Montcalm contact Wellness & Prevention Services at 989831-4591 or info@mcpud.org. KIM AlExAnDER, CHAIRpERsOn

Spectrum Health United Hospital Now Provides the Latest in Mammography
GrEENVILLE, MI., June 30, 2010 –Women who undergo routine mammograms at united Hospital now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography. Greenville’s united Hospital features the state-of-the-art system, Selenia™ digital mammography from Hologic™. ”We are very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection,” states Mike Ancil, director of diagnostic imaging. digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and, more importantly, viewed. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern. By offering women the latest technology in mammography, the hospital hopes to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings. The digital mammography unit at united Hospital is accredited by the American College of radiology, and meets all the requirements of the uS Food and drug Administration’s Mammography Quality Standards program. All technologists performing mammography procedures at united Hospital are certified and registered with the American registry of radiologic Technologists. Spectrum Health is a not-for-profit health system in West Michigan that offers a full continuum of care through the Spectrum Health Hospital Group, a collection of seven hospitals and more than 140 service sites; the Spectrum Health Medical Group, mmpc® and West Michigan Heart—physician groups totaling more than 400 providers; and Priority Health, a health plan with nearly 580,000 members. Spectrum Health’s 16,000 employees, 1,500 medical staff members and 2,000 volunteers are committed to delivering the highest quality care. The organization provided $79.4 million in community benefit during its 2009 fiscal year. As a system, Spectrum Health has earned more than 100 awards since it was formed in 1997.

Our pet of the week this time around is not one but two adorable kittens, both of them desperate for a new owner to come and adopt them! They’re j just a couple of the many cats and dogs available at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter in Stanton. These two kitties are named Fred and Ginger - both weigh about three pounds and w are around twelve weeks old. Fred’s coat is buff and white, while Ginger has black and white fur. It’s hard to tell who’s cuter, but either one would definitely make a great addition to your home! Their shelter ID #’s are 10/06/105 & 107.
Many other cats besides Fred and Ginger are available to be adopted, and plenty of dogs too. Go online to for a full list of adoptable animals. There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is “fixed” already. New animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open to the public Mon-Fri 12:30pm to 5pm, except Weds 12:30pm to 7pm. Call (989) 831-7355 or (616) 225-7355 for more information.

Health Matters
It Could Be A Rough Time
By Ronda Addy
In the winter, you run the risk of getting frostbite, In the summer, you run the risk of getting a whole slew of things, including poison ivy, mosquito bites and bee stings. Fortunately, if you take the proper precautions, you can avoid many of these things. Lyme disease is the biggest threat you face from a tick bite, specifically the bite of a black-legged deer tick. To protect yourself against Lyme disease, take these precautions: • Wear light-colored clothing so the ticks will be easier to see. • Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks or boots. • Use tick repellent. • Stay away from shrubby areas and tall grass. • Keep the turfgrass mowed around your home and remove all brush piles. • Thin out low shrub vegetation in the woods around your home and widen all trails to six feet. Infected mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting the West Nile virus. To protect yourself against the West Nile virus, take these precautions: • Avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. • Wear shoes, socks, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and insect repellent when outdoors. Make sure the insect repellent is child friendly and contains picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus and DEET. Read the directions before using it. If wearing thin clothing, use repellent containing permethrin or some other EPA-registered repellent. Don’t apply permethrin directly to your skin. • Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when outdoors. • Install tight-fitting screens on doors and windows. Repair openings or tears on damaged screens. • Keep doors and windows shut, especially at night. • Eliminate all areas of standing water, such as birdbaths, wading pools and flowerpots. For some people, bee stings can be fatal. To avoid getting stung by a bee, take these precautions: • Wear light-colored clothing and shoes when outdoors. Dark colors and prints attract bees. • Avoid using flowery soaps, lotions or perfumes. • Don’t leave food, garbage or drinks lying out uncovered. • Stay away from gardens and orchards. • If you see a bee, move away from it slowly. Don’t swat at it; this will only aggravate it. • If several bees are coming at you at the same time, run for shelter. Food-borne illnesses are common during the summer and are caused by undercooked meat and contaminated produce. To avoid food-borne illnesses, take these precautions: • Wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before cooking or eating. • Wash cooking surfaces thoroughly and keep raw food separated from cooked food. • Store marinated food in the refrigerator. • Wash fruits and vegetables with cool running water and use a soft brush to scrub rough surfaces. • Store cold food for a picnic in a cooler with plenty of ice or freezer gel. Keep the cooler in the shade and make sure the food stays at 40 degrees or below. • Wrap hot food well and keep it in an insulated container at 140 degrees or more. For most people, exposure to poison oak, ivy or poison sumac can make them miserable. To avoid exposure to these plants, take these precautions: • Learn to identify the plants so you can avoid them. • Wear socks, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and closed footwear when walking in an area that may have the plants. Use plastic gloves when working in an area that may have the plants. The oils in them can soak through cotton gloves. • Apply a barrier cream if you think you might be exposed to the plants. This will slow the absorption of the oil into your skin. • Don’t touch your face, eyes or any other part of your body if you think your hands or gloves may have been exposed to the plants. Wash your hands immediately with rubbing alcohol and rinse with cool water. Then take a hot shower, using plenty of soap and making sure you get under your fingernails to wash out any remaining oil. • Avoid contact with your pet if you think they may have been exposed to the plants. Wash them three times with a good shampoo, being sure to wear gloves and goggles and cover all exposed skin. Dry them off with a towel and wash the towel immediately in hot water. • Handle all exposed objects with care. Thoroughly wash off any tools in hot, soapy water and wash clothing and let it dry outside for a couple of days before handling it. • Handle dead plants just like you would live ones. Dispose of them properly. Do not burn them; the fumes could lead to internal exposure. If you take the proper precautions this summer, you can have fun and stay safe. Enjoy!

Spectrum Health United Hospital Now Provides the Latest in Mammography
GREENVILLE, MI., June 30, 2010 – Women who undergo routine mammograms at United Hospital now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography.

Feed the body
To work correctly, our bodies must have foods that contain all eleven primary chemical elements, plus trace elements that are needed in tiny quantities. Soft tissues need Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur. Boney tissues need Calcium, Phosphorus, and Magnesium. The Main electrolytes are Potassium, Sodium, and Chloride. Essential trace elements include: Iron, Fluorine, Zinc, Copper, Iodine, Selenium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Chromium, and Cobalt. Other trace elements that are not essential, but useful are: Silicon, Vanadium, Tin, Nickel, Arsenic, Boron, Strontium, Lithium, and Germanium Wow, that is quite a grocery list. All of that is supposed to come from our food. One of the big problems is that sometimes the soil that grows the food does not contain all the things we need. For example, most Michigan soil is low in Iodine. As a result many people in the last few generations had thyroid problems. This is why we feel quite strongly about supplementation of the diet with a good nature vitamin and trace mineral combination. Another problem is picking fruit before it is ripe, to increase the shelf life. I know someone who grows oranges, who picks them green and stores them for many months in cold warehouses. When it is time to ship them, the room is filled with some kind of gas which turns the green fruit orange overnight. Some times they spray paint the oranges so they look nice. So the nutritional content is difficult to know for sure. Buy organic if you can. Some of the local grocery stores are stocking some organic food. Look for a 4 digit code that starts with a 9 ( example 9253). 4000 numbers are not organic, and 8000 numbers mean the food is GMO, genetically modified. We do not really know yet if that is a big problem, but it might be. So the best advice is to eat organic, and add a good natural vitamin plus mineral supplement. Check your supplement to see if it will dissolve in water or vinegar in less than 5 minutes. If it will, then it will dissolve in your digestive tract and be able to be absorbed.
