Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including

strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self
Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you,
your attitude and your responses to them in the moment.

Self awareness is the first step in creating what you want and mastering
your life. Where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions,
personality and behavior determine where you go in life. Having self
awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking
you. It also allows you to take control of your emotions, behavior, and
personality so you can make changes you want. Until you are aware in the
moment of your thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, you will have
difficulty making changes in the direction of your life.

Being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills.

Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place

to another. It may be vocally (using voice), written (using printed or digital
media such as books, magazines, websites or emails), visually (using logos,
maps, charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language, gestures and
the tone and pitch of voice).

How well this information can be transmitted and received is a measure of

how good our communication skills are.

Developing your communication skills can help all aspects of your life, from
your professional life to social gatherings and everything in between.

The ability to communicate information accurately, clearly and as intended,

is a vital life skill and something that should not be overlooked. Its never too

We must understand before we judge

Empathy is, at its simplest, awareness of the feelings and emotions of other
people. It is a key element of Emotional Intelligence, the link between self
and others, because it is how we as individuals understand what others are
experiencing as if we were feeling it ourselves.

Empathy goes far beyond sympathy, which might be considered feeling for
someone. Empathy, instead, is feeling with that person, through the use of

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding

the logical connection between ideas. Critical thinking has been the subject
of much debate and thought since the time of early Greek philosophers such
as Plato and Socrates and has continued to be a subject of discussion into
the modern age.

Critical thinking might be described as the ability to engage in reflective

and independent thinking.
In essence, critical thinking requires you to use your ability to reason. It is
about being an active learner rather than a passive recipient of information.

Critical thinking is thinking about things in certain ways so as to arrive at

the best possible solution in the circumstances that the thinker is aware of. In
more everyday language, it is a way of thinking about whatever is presently
occupying your mind so that you come to the best possible conclusion.

Someone with critical thinking skills can:

Understand the links between ideas.

Determine the importance and relevance of arguments and ideas.

Recognise, build and appraise arguments.

Identify inconsistencies and errors in reasoning.

Approach problems in a consistent and systematic way.

Reflect on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs and

Sympathy is feeling bad for someone else because of something that has
happened to them.

We often talk about it and feel sympathetic when someone has died, or
something bad has happened, saying Give them my sympathy, or I really
feel for them.

rustle of a wing.

Showing Sympathy

Because sympathy is indelibly linked to bad experiences, for example, the

death of a family member, it is often appropriate to show your sympathy
with someone else.

While this can seem like a formality, the idea is to help the other person to
feel better, by showing that you understand that they are having a bad time,
and may need some help.

Sympathy may be expressed either verbally or non-verbally.

Examples of sympathy expressed verbally include:

Speaking to someone to say how sorry you are about their situation;

Sending a card when someone has been bereaved.

Examples of sympathy expressed non-verbally include:

Patting someone on the shoulder at a funeral;

Putting a hand on someones arm when they tell you their bad news; and

Dropping your tone of voice when you speak

Causes of Sympathy
For people to experience sympathy towards someone else, several elements
are necessary:

You must be paying attention to the other person.

Being distracted limits our ability to feel sympathy.

The other person must seem in need in some way.

Our perceptions of the level of need will determine the level of

sympathy. For example, someone with a graze on their knee will get less
sympathy than someone else with a broken leg.

We are also much more likely to be sympathetic towards someone who

appears to have done nothing to earn their misfortune.

The child who falls while running towards a parent will get more
sympathy than the one who was doing something that they had been
specifically told not to do, and has fallen as a result.
Creative thinking inspires ideas. Ideas inspire CHANGE

Creative thinking means thinking about new things or thinking in new

ways. It is thinking outside the box. Often, creativity in this sense involves
what is called lateral thinking, or the ability to perceive patterns that are not
obvious. The fictional detective Sherlock Holmes used lateral thinking in one
famous story when he realized that a dog not barking was an important clue
in a murder case.

Some people are naturally more creative than others, but creative thinking
can be strengthened with practice. You can practice creative thinking by
solving riddles, by becoming aware of and letting go of your assumptions,
and through playanything unstructured and relaxing. Even daydreaming
can help.

Creative people can devise new ways to carry out tasks, solve problems, and
meet challenges. They bring a fresh and sometimes unorthodox perspective
to their work and can help departments and organizations to move in more
productive directions.

In its simplest sense, decision-making is the act of choosing

between two or more courses of action.

In the wider process of problem-solving, decision-making involves choosing

between possible solutions to a problem. Decisions can be made through
either an intuitive or reasoned process, or a combination of the two.


Intuition is using your gut feeling about possible courses of action.

Although people talk about it as if it was a magical sense, intuition is

actually a combination of past experience and your personal values. It is
worth taking your intuition into account, because it reflects your learning
about life. It is, however, not always based on reality, only your perceptions,
many of which may have started in childhood and may not be very mature
as a result.

It is therefore worth examining your gut feeling closely, especially if you have
a very strong feeling against a particular course of action, to see if you can
work out why, and whether the feeling is justified.

Reasoning is using the facts and figures in front of you to make


Reasoning has its roots in the here-and-now, and in facts. It can, however,
ignore emotional aspects to the decision, and in particular, issues from the
past that may affect the way that the decision is implemented.

Intuition is a perfectly acceptable means of making a decision,

although it is generally more appropriate when the decision is of a
simple nature or needs to be made quickly.

More complicated decisions tend to require a more formal, structured

approach, usually involving both intuition and reasoning. It is important to be
wary of impulsive reactions to a situation.

What Can Prevent Effective Decision-Making?

There are a number of problems that can prevent effective decision-
making. These include:

1. Not Enough Information

Sometimes its difficult to make a decision because you just dont care one
way or the other. In this case, a structured decision-making process can often
help by identifying some very real pros and cons of particular actions, that
perhaps you hadnt thought about before.

Many of these issues can be overcome by using a structured decision-making

process. This will help to:

Reduce more complicated decisions down to simpler steps;

See how any decisions are arrived at; and

Plan decision making to meet deadlines.

Many different techniques of decision making have been developed, ranging

from simple rules of thumb, to extremely complex procedures. The method
used depends on the nature of the decision to be made and how complex it

So, being a confident problem solver is really important to your
success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good process to use
when approaching a problem. With one, you can solve problems quickly and

Whatever issue you are faced with, some steps are fundamental:

Identify the problem

Act on a plan
Look at the consequences

This is the IDEAL model of problem-solving.

The final stage is to put the solution you have decided on into practice and
check the results.

There are several stages to solving a problem:

1) Evaluating the problem

Clarifying the nature of a problem

Formulating questions

Gathering information systematically

Collating and organising data

Condensing and summarising information

Defining the desired objective

2) Managing the problem

Using the information gathered effectively

Breaking down a problem into smaller, more manageable, parts

Using techniques such as brainstorming and lateral thinking to

consider options

Analysing these options in greater depth

Identifying steps that can be taken to achieve the objective

3) Decision-making

deciding between the possible options for what action to take

deciding on further information to be gathered before taking action

deciding on resources (time, funding, staff etc) to be allocated to this

Implementing action
