LAB#4 TO STUDY THE CREEP PHENOMENON IN GIVEN MATERIAL

AND TO OBTAIN A TIME-EXTENSION CURVE

THEORY: Creep is a continuing deformation of a material with the passage of time when
material is subjected to a constant load. Normal tensile test is for short interval of time and so
strain results refer to only for short interval of time. For metals, like Lead, creep effects are
negligible at normal temperature but become significant at high temperatures. For Plastics, creep
is quite significant at normal temperature and even more at high temperature.

APPARATUS:

Creep testing apparatus

vernier calliper
specimen for testing.

PROCEDURE:

1. I released and removed the upper and lower pin clips.

2. Then I made fit the new specimen in the linkages ensuring that the linkage
clip is fully in position.
3. I checked that the dial gauge is in contact with lower side of the Lever
arm.
4. Then I measured the cross section area of the specimen.
5. After that I measured the gauge length which came to be 22mm.
6. I recorded the temperature at 26.8 C.
7. I installed the weights in the apparatus.
8. From the observations of the apparatus and the data obtained through it, I
calculated the stress by formula; = F/A.

FACTORS AFFECTING CREEP:

TEMPERATURE: Higher the temperature, greater will be the creep. i.e T creep
STRESS: Greater the stress, greater will be the creep. i.e S creep
COMPOSITION: Different materials with different composition reacts differently when
subjected to creep.
GRAIN SIZE: Materials with fine grain size give best creep properties at low
temperatures; while materials with course grain size give best creep properties at high
temperatures.
