THE NATURE OF A CRITIQUE ESSAY

The critique essay is not about concerned with the


CONTENT of the article but whether or not the
AUTHOR of the article presented an effective (or
ineffective) argument.

should be CONCISE and PRECISE


write only major points (main ideas and its
supporting points)
do not include the facts
ie: The CID Police Officer.

should start with a thesis statement:
* the authors central theme (the topic or
general subject matter of the article)
Ex: The article is about poor factors given by
authorities on why the cases of baby
dumping are rising in Malaysia.
Do not simply copy and paste the authors
sentences.

- things the author takes for granted without presenting
any proof
Facts versus opinion
What type of support does the authors present?
- evidence the author uses to back up their argument
How relevant is the support?
- whether it directly relates to the argument

- it consists of facts and other clear evidence
5. Is the authors argument complete?
- presents adequate support and overcome
opposing views
6. Based on all of the above, is the authors

7. Based on all of the above, is the authors
argument credible?
- the argument is believable and convincing
