Tom Robinson Trial

The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any

color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury

box(Lee 295). Based on the evidence obtained the jurys verdict is false. Maycombs

universe of obligation led them to believe that Tom Robinson was guilty even though the

evidence showed he was innocent.

The jurys verdict was wrong because they said he was guilty when the evidence

showed that he was innocent. During the trial Mayella Ewell did not have her story straight.

No, I do not recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me(Lee 248). Tom Robinson

had his story straight and it made sense. She scared me so bad I hopped down an turned

the chair over that was the only thing, only furniture, sturbed in that room, Mr.Finch, when i

left it. I swear fore God.(Lee 259).

The correct verdict would be that Tom Robinson is innocent. Tom Robinson did not

have the ability to use his left arm because of a work accident from work. His left arm was

fully twelve inches shorter than his right(248 Lee). Mayella Ewell had a black right eye

meaning that Tom could not have punched her unless it was her left eye. I could see that it

was no use to him(Lee,248). The only thing that makes sense is that Mayellas father hit

her and beat her when he was drunk. Your left handed, Mr. Ewell (Lee 237).
Even though the jurys verdict was wrong but it made sense that it was what they

came too. Maycombs universe of obligation is very racist based. Mostly everybody

probably knew that Tom was innocent but since Tom was African American the jury found

him guilty. White males could almost get away with anything especially if it was against an

African American. White women were supposed to be pure and have pure thoughts.

in conclusion the Tom Robinson case was unfair but it was justified. During this time

period the south was very racist and blind. Race was a very influential on the communities

decisions in the court. it is a sin to kill a mockingbird bird because they do nothing but make

sound for us to enjoy just like Tom Robinson, all he wanted to do was help even though he

knew he was in danger.
