PED 3119 Maker Project: Understanding Energy

Production
Course: CGC1D
Unit: Managing Canadas Resources and Industries
Over the course of our unit investigating how Canada manages our natural
resources, we have learned about different ways in which energy is produced
to meet the needs of our electricity based society.
We have seen how spinning magnets induce electrical currents in conductive
metals (such as copper) to create generators. The difficulty is providing
enough energy to get those magnets moving!
Part I: Research
Through information learned during this unit, as well as research found from
reliable (cited) sources, you will:
1) Choose a means of energy production used in Canada today (wind,
hydro, coal, nuclear, etc)
2) Explain the process of how these resources are used to create energy
3) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the energy production
that you chose with reference to sustainability, economic influence,
efficiency, etc.

Part II: Design + Build

In groups of 2, your job will be to design a turbine using Tinkercad to then 3D
print. Once you have your turbine printed, you will design and build a model
of how you will put this turbine to use to create energy.
Your model does not have to be (but may be) fully functional in producing
energy, but should model a current process used to provide us with energy.

All sources used must be properly cited in a bibliography

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1) Which method produces the largest amount of energy in Canada
today? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this method?

2) Name and explain at least 2 strategies that the Canadian government

has implemented to increase sustainability of natural resources today.
3) How your model (or something similar) be used in your house or
community to produce energy efficiently?
