Notes on Ave Maria:

The Latin text translation: Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among
women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Schuberts original composition is titled Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellens third song), and his lyrics
are from Dr. Adam Storcks German translation of The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott.
In this song, Ellen is in hiding and prays to the Virgin Mary. The Latin text, though the most
frequently sung, was not added to Schuberts melody until after his death.

Sir Walter Scotts original text from The Dr. Adam Storcks translation as set by
Lady of the Lake: Schubert:
Ave Maria! maiden mild! Ave Maria! Jungfrau mild,
Listen to a maidens prayer! Erhre einer Jungfrau Flehen,
Thou canst hear though from the wild, Aus diesem Felsen starr und wild
Thou canst save amid despair. Soll mein Gebet zu dir hinwehen.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care, Wir schlafen sicher bis zum Morgen,
Though banishd, outcast and reviled Ob Menschen noch so grausam sind.
Maiden! hear a maidens prayer; O Jungfrau, sieh der Jungfrau Sorgen,
Mother, hear a suppliant child! O Mutter, hr ein bittend Kind!
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! undefiled! Ave Maria! Unbefleckt!

The flinty couch we now must share Wenn wir auf diesen Fels hinsinken
Shall seem this down of eider piled, Zum Schlaf, und uns dein Schutz bedeckt
If thy protection hover there. Wird weich der harte Fels uns dnken.
The murky caverns heavy air Du lchelst, Rosendfte wehen
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled; In dieser dumpfen Felsenkluft,
Then, Maiden! hear a maidens prayer; O Mutter, hre Kindes Flehen,
Mother, list a suppliant child! O Jungfrau, eine Jungfrau ruft!
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! stainless styled! Ave Maria! Reine Magd!

Foul demons of the earth and air, Der Erde und der Luft Dmonen,
From this their wonted haunt exiled, Von deines Auges Huld verjagt,
Shall flee before thy presence fair. Sie knnen hier nicht bei uns wohnen,
We bow us to our lot of care, Wir wolln uns still dem Schicksal beugen,
Beneath thy guidance reconciled; Da uns dein heilger Trost anweht;
Hear for a maid a maidens prayer, Der Jungfrau wolle hold dich neigen,
And for a father hear a child! Dem Kind, das fr den Vater fleht.
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!
