Background: The high demand of health service of the people affects the quality of health
service, including nursing service. Nursing service is a professional service which is
humanistic and is able to fulfil patients’ needs holistically. Therefore, nurses are demanded
to have caring behavior. Caring is a service focussing on patients as humanbeings, as
nursing caring. This research aimed to identify and analyze the relationship between
patients’ perception and nurses’ caring behavior.

Method: The design used was a descriptive correlative research. The population was in-
patients who were being under care more than two days at the medical surgery room
Dirgahayu Hospital, Samarinda. 120 respondents were selected using stratified random
sampling. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. Chi-square test was used to
analyze the data using Fisher's exact test.

Result of the Research: It was found out that the number of patients who gave good
perception was, 68 people (56.7%) and who gave not so good perception was 52 people
(43.3%). While, the number of nurses who had good caring behavior was 62 people
(51,7%) and the not so good was 58 people (48.3%)

The chi-square test revealed that from 68 respondents who gave good perception, there
were 24 people (38.7%) stated that the nurses’ caring behavior was good, and 44 people
(75.9%) stated that the nurses’ caring behavior was not so good. While, from 52 people
(43.3%) who gave not so good perception, there were 14 people (24.1%) stated that the
nurses’ caring behavior was not so good.

The result of Fisher's exact test showed that p value= 0.000< 0.005. Therefore, it could be
concluded that there was a relationship between the nurses’ perception and nurses’
caring behavior.

Conclusion: Nurses’ caring behavior was the most principle aspect in nursing practice. If
the perception was good, the nurses’ caring behavior was good and vice versa, the worse
the perception was the worse the nurses’ caring behavior would be.
