BIOTECHNOLOGY 1 & 2

Course Description:

Biotechnology 1 & 2 is a year long introductory course focusing on proper lab technique and procedure. This
class is to be considered a Science Elective and is on the Biotechnology Career Pathway. Students will spend
80% of their time in a laboratory setting learning SLOP Technique (Sterile Lab Operating Procedure) and well
as introductory level biotechnology techniques that every lab worker must master if he or she goes into and
academic or corporate lab in pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial, or instrumentation biotechnology.
Students interested in pursuing a career in the rapidly growing field of biotechnology should take this class.
Students entering this pathway are encouraged to attend a two-year college to become certified as
biotechnology Lab Assistants or may choose to pursue a four year degree. Furthermore, this class will prepare
students for Chemistry and Biotechnology 3 & 4.

Biotechnology 1 Introduction to Biotechnology/Basic Lab Skills

Biotechnology 2 Recombinant DNA Technology/Protein Production

Lifelong Learning:

Our school-wide goal at Santa Clara is for all students to become:
- Effective Communicators - Contributing Citizens
- Self-Directed Learners - Collaborative Workers
- Informed, Productive Thinkers - Information Processors

All assignments will be created with the attainment of the ESLRs as a goal. Over the course of the year we
hope for all students to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses in regards to the ESLRs and
Standards in order to direct their learning in a more meaningful way.

Expected School-wide Learning Goals (ESLR’s): I will also help you practice our school-wide learning goals
at Santa Clara, which includes helping all students to become:

- Effective Communicators - Contributing Citizens - Self-Directed Learners
- Collaborative Workers - Informed, Productive Thinkers - Information Processors

All assignments will be created with the attainment of the ESLRs and the State Standards for Biology students
as a goal. Over the course of the year we hope for all students to become aware of their strengths and
weaknesses in regards to the ESLRs and Standards in order to direct their learning in a more meaningful way.

Classroom Behavior: **In addition to all school rules**
1. All students respect themselves and all other living things.
2. All students honor learning and our time together.
3. All students are responsible for maintaining a clean, healthy, and safe environment.
4. Cell phone/electronic use is at teacher discretion. If I say it’s okay, then you can use them.

Some things that I will definitely NOT tolerate in class:

Hoods and hats
Ear buds where I can see them
Horseplay in lab
Food of any kind in, near, around the classroom – I don’t even like you to have water
Messiness – it is critical that clean up lab areas and glassware after use

Tardy Policy:
No students will be admitted into class late without a tardy pass.

Materials:

❖ Textbook – Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium & Laboratory Manual
❖ Science Notebook (I will give this to you)
❖ Blue or Black ink pen (non-erasable)
❖ Use Schoolloop often!

Attendance:
Attendance and participation are critical to your overall success in this class and will determine your final
grade and overall understanding of the material. It will be your responsibility to find out what work you’ve
missed, due to absences. NOTE: Since you will spend about 80% of your time in lab, you need to regularly
attend class. You will be required to complete ALL labs, which means you may need to before or after school
to complete a lab that you missed.

YOU MAY NOT COPY LAB RESULTS FROM OTHER STUDENTS – IF YOU MISS A LAB YOU MUST
MAKE IT UP AFTER SCHOOL – MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH ME!

Grade Policy:
Grades will be based on the traditional percentage scale:

YOU MUST EARN A FINAL GRADE OF C- OR BETTER TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT COURSE
SEQUENCE!

A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%

Grades will be weighted in the following manner:
❖ Science Notebook (30%)
❖ Classwork/Bookwork (30%)
❖ Tests and Quizzes (25%)
❖ Final Exam (15%)

**I reserve the right change, add, or delete any of the above information…if it is in the best interest of
the class
