GENERAL NOTES

y

Check Scholarship Notices at your Ministry of Education (various bilateral agreements), as well as cultural institutions (cf. Cervantes centres; British Councils, Instituts Français, etc.). Governmental scholarships depend on cultural affiliation and intermediate level of the host country language is required in most cases. Generally, LMD scheme should apply at EU Universities: Bachelor ± 3 years; Master - 2 years; and PhD ± 3 years. However, many universities offer Master¶s for 1 or 1 ½ year, integrated Ma/PhD programs and PhD studies from 3 to 5 years. For most PhD positions scholarships are available to EU as well as to non EU students. Check the websites of the specific universities you¶re interested in. Some of them advertise available positions throughout the year, some have strict deadlines each year ± e .g. May 1st and October 1st. In UK and Ireland, Scandinavian countries and the Flemish part of Belgium PhD scholarships are advertised as JOBS at the respective university/ research centre Recommendation letters are not obligatory (even ignored) when applying for MA/PhD in Denmark (and in some cases in Italy!). However, these universities require a written work ± a publication or a chapter of your thesis. One may apply to a 4-year PhD in Denmark after having obtained 60 credits in a Master¶s degree; Sciences Po (Paris) also offers integrated Ma/Phd program ± 5 years duration. Few other universities (cf. U of Trento in Italy and U Carlos III de Madrid in Spain) also offer integrated MA/PhD degrees Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries are increasingly developing programs in English and scholarships at the graduate level are available to int¶l students. Some universities prefer applications to be submitted by post (paper), others prefer this to be done electronically. Unlike North America, no application fees are required in Europe. However, some universities (Germany; Italy) may require students to pay tuition fees upon admission. Usually students who obtain scholarships are exempt from taxes, but this is not the case for Ph.D. students in Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands.
