veryexact.Theresaprofoundemphasisonexactlyhowyoumust
performyourprayer,exactlywhenyoumustbeginyourfast,exactly
howtheanimalmustbeslaughtered,exactlyhowtopurifyyourselfand
thelistgoeson.

Thisemphasisissooverwhelmingthatformany,theentirereligion
beginstobeviewedfromthelensofobligationsandprohibitions.So
manyyoungpeoplearoundtheworldwereintroducedtotheirreligion
thiswayfromanearlyage.ItdoesnthelpthatthefearofGodwas
unjustifiablyinstilledinthemataninnocent,sinlessage.Dontdothat,
Allahwillbeveryangry!amotherwillsaytoherchild.ThatsHaram!
AllahhatesitwhenyoudoHaram!

RelegatingIslamtoonlyitslegaldimensionhashadmanyserious
consequences.Amassivegenerationofyoungpeoplewereraised

knowingwhatsdislikedbutneverknowingwhy.Theycametoknowa
God,Allah,whoiseasilyangered,eagertopunish,andverystrict
abouttherules.

Beforeanyonejumpsthegun,letmejustsaythatImnotundermining
thevalueandimportanceofthesacredlawofIslam.Allofitisa
revealedgiftandpartofmyfaith,andyours,istocherishandhonorit
assuch.Abidingbyitisanobleobligationanddefyingitisagrievous
sin.

Havingsaidthat,ourreligionisfarmorethanjustasetofrules.Had
thatbeenthecase,theQuranwouldhavebeenoverflowingwithlaws
andregulations.Yetlawstakeuptheleastamountofspaceinthe
Book.

Weallknowhowdifficultitcanbetogetotherstotakeactionifyou
usethewrongtoneorifyouapproachtheminawaythatalienates
them,evenifitsintheirbestinterest.Nooneknowsthisbetterthan
ourMaster,Allah.

SoevenwhenAllahspeaksaboutHislaws,Hespeaksofthemina
waythatisfullofwisdom,love,andmercy.Heoftentellsusthemoral
underpinningsofthespecificregulationsHesgivingus.TheQuran
placesitsprimaryemphasisontransformingpeoplefromwithin.The
lawsaresimplyanoutermanifestationofinnerpurification.

ItsalsocriticaltonotethatAllahwantsgoodforallpeople,believing
anddisbelieving..Allahisthepossessorofgreat
favoruponmankind.ThefundamentalcalloftheQuranisactuallyto
recognizeAllahsfavorandcomebeforeHiminlovingappreciation
andgratitude,notresentfulfear.

IfelttheneedtosaythisbecauseasIreflectuponmyownreligious
experiencegrowingup,Igotthatsamenegativeperception.PerhapsI
wasntexposedtoAllahswordsproperly.Ihopethisgenerationis
different.IhopethatithasafarbetterrelationshipwiththeQuranthan
mygenerationdid.Andthroughit,theydeepentheirconvictionina
LovingGodwhogavethemapathtoselftransformationandWhoonly
gavethemlawstolightentheirburdensinlife,nottoaddtothem!
