Lesson Plan For: Discovering Connections

Date: March 02, Unit Topic: Making Inferences

2017 Subject: Reading
Grade Level: Third Grade

TEKS: 3.8 Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students

understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the
structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text
to support their understanding.
Objective:
Today we will learn about making connections through literature.
Academic
Language Today we will read, discuss and write in complete sentences to
Objective: understand the text.

Guiding What is schema?

Questions: What can I infer?
What is a clue that helped me make my inference?

Misconceptions: In this lesson, some students might face some misconceptions.

The students can think that making inferences is the same as
making a prediction. It's important to address that they are two
completely different reading skills.

Another misconception that the students might encounter is the

belief that inferences must be correct and that they will find clues
in the text.

Materials: 1. Schema/ Making Inferences Anchor Chart

2. No, David book
3. What can I infer? Chart
4. Markers
5. White sheet of paper with pictures from David book
6. Manilla Folders
7. Pencils
8. Exit ticket Inferencing with David
Procedure: 1. Teacher will activate the students background
knowledge using anchor charts and asking the
students orally if they know what is schema? And
how can we infer something from a picture or text?
Teacher will remind students that schema is the
information we already have in stored in our brain.
2. Next, the teacher will transition with the whole
class using GLAD strategies to move to the carpet
where she will model how to infer using a picture
from the book No, David.
3. Once the teacher has model how to make
inferences by analyzing the picture she will use
GLAD strategies again to transition from the carpet
to their desks. Once the students are in their desk
they will be assign one picture per group from the
book No, David. Students will work first
independently and make inferences about the
picture. Then the students will work as a group and
work on making inferences. Responsibilities roles
will be assign to their groups.
4. Teacher will use the word scoop, students will rotate
to a different group where they will make inferences
with a different picture from the book. They will
follow this pattern until they have seen the five
different pictures.
5. Teacher will use Kagan strategies to share one
inference that they group made.
6. The teacher will then read the book No, David as
a whole class.
7. Once the teacher has read the book, the teacher
will explain that now they will be using their schema
to make inferences in the story. (Using Inferencing
with David sheet) This will be their exit ticket.

Modifications for Students will be guided with positive reinforcement. The teacher
Special Ed will also be able to read the questions as well as directions of
students: assignments. The teacher will provide exit ticket with definitions
for vocabulary such as schema and inferences.
