Stewart Cellars in Yountville

One of Yountvilles newest additions, Stewart Cellars, beckons
guests with its Scottish abbey-inspired stone faade, an homage
to the Stewart family's ancestral heritage. Outside, the open-air
courtyard is tastefully appointed with Adirondack chairs, a vintage
daybed layered with pillows and a communal picnic table, where
guests are invited to while their day away under the sun.
In the Tasting Hall, guests with or without reservations are
welcome to choose from two flights of wine. The Portfolio Flight
features four Stewart Cellars current releases and the Cabernet Flight
offers a selection of their current and past vintages of Cabernet
Sauvignon. A beautiful alabaster horseshoe shaped bar is the
highlight of the tasting room, alongside a custom designed 20' long
oak Scottish settle.
For enthusiasts who wish to adventure further into their tasting
experience in a more intimate setting, the NOMAD Heritage Library
is available by reservation for private tastings of Stewart Cellars
current and select library vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon and their Winemaker Chris Pisani
vineyard designate, NOMAD Beckstoffer Las Piedras Cabernet
Sauvignon. The library not only showcases wine, but is also home
to a collection of books, current and vintage, including some rare
finds and personal favorites of the Stewart family. Unwind by the fire
with a glass of wine and a good book for the perfect pairing.
If hunger calls, wander just a few steps away into Gather Caf
where Chef Sarah Hellers seasonal fare is sure to curb your appetite.

Prager Winery and Port Works
Port Its not just for dessert!
What better way to share a meal with family and friends
over a perfect port? Prager Winery and Port Works, located in
St. Helena, has something special for everyone. Enjoy the small
and intimate tasting room where you can sample a variety of
delicious offerings and taste a number of great port wines for
your spring gatherings.
For those who have doubts about port wine or feel
intimidated by its mystery, the Pragers welcome an open
discussion regarding their products and production. With
their knowledge and love for port, they work to debunk the
preconceptions most people have with it. Dont be afraid, its
port, General Manager, Jeff Prager says. Its not just a dessert
wine, or a sweet wine, in fact, our white ports are a superb
accompaniment to savory foods. Our red ports are not as sweet
as other ports and pair well with pizza and pasta. Dont just
take Pragers word for it. The entire family wants you to learn all
about port wines by pulling the cork and trying them yourself.
The tasting experience is $20.00 per person and includes a
souvenir logo glass. Reservations are required. To cleanse your
palates, delectable chocolate truffles as well as Imogene Pragers
sweet and savory walnuts and pecans are also available.

Prager Ports & Wines

Dont miss the Noble Companion Napa Valley ten-year-
old Tawny Port and the Aria White Port Napa Valley. The
Noble Companion speaks for itself. This classic Tawny-style
port is aged for more 10 years in oak barrels. The amber
colored fortified wine developed enticing aromas of caramel
and dried strawberries with a hint of tobacco.
The Aria is a moderately sweet white port produced from
Napa Valley Chardonnay and is aged for over three years
in oak barrels. This golden straw-colored port developed
aromas of brandied pear and roasted nuts.
From the tasting menu, you will find a delicious vintage
Royal Escort Port, a Blonde Tawny, an extended barrel-aged
white port, a number of Late Harvest Rieslings, a Petite
Sirah table wine and so much more. The Pragers invite you
to step off the beaten path and join them for a festive port
experience.

The Tasting Room at
ERIC ROSS
The best hospitality, winemaking and journalistic experience comes to life in this
tasting room, a cornerstone of Glen Ellen. Just off Arnold Drive, Eric Ross Winery
welcomes wine lovers to savor the perfect varietal wine while enjoying a collection of
stunning photographs lined along the walls.
Walk in and you cant miss the colorful metaled rooster standing tall in the room
waiting to greet his guests. The space is bright, open and rustic with high vaulted
ceilings, a steel countered wine bar, oak barrels, leather rocking chairs, and plenty
of room to sit by the fire. Behind the bar, Dennis and Diane Mitchell aim to please
by customizing a tasting experience to your individual preference. Together, they
incorporate real, down to earth hospitality with every fine wine they pour into the
glass. They want to make things easier for the traveler however they can and will
gladly ship wine for you if you need the helping hand.
As you sample your favorite wine, you will have the chance to see owner Eric
Luses passion for photography on the gallery walls. Eric, once a photographer
for the San Francisco Chronicle, has held a life-long fascination with winemaking
and all things wine country, resulting in a series of photographs that showcase the
seasons, nature, and vineyard workers in one of the lushest and fertile regions of the
world. The images give voice to the treasured moments captured by the camera. The
excellent service, the wines and the vivid images come together to offer a unique wine
tasting experience like no other.

The Wines
Eric Ross Winery has been producing wine for over twenty years, cultivating
high-end fruit from single designate vineyards in the Sonoma Valley. Eric works
directly and collaboratively with his wine grape growers and estate owners to produce
over 3000 cases of wine.

Under the Silver Image label, Eric is planning to release his first 2016
Grenache vintage this fall. Given how things have warmed up in Carneros
region the fruit will have ripened properly. The blend consists of 95%
Grenache and 5% Syrah. With only 100 cases produced this vintage will be a
big hit amongst wine club members and visitors alike.
In addition, there are over a dozen varietal wines to sample in the
tasting room. For those who love a good Tempranillo, the 2013 Eric Ross
Tempranillo is for you. Utilizing Lodi Sustainable farming practices, this
rich exotic vintage flows from the glass with layers of Spanish traditions
of food and winemaking. You will discover blackberry, espresso, and dark
chocolate, followed by hints of dry cured black Moroccan olives.
For white wine drinkers, you cant go wrong with 2013 Viognier Silver
Image vintage. This Rhone varietal is at its best after a long hang time in
the cool vineyard region of Sonoma County, Russian River. By then, it begs
to break out with its big personality. You will detect hints of peaches, spices
and subtle undertones of French Oak coming from this bold, rich fruit.

What to Look for in a Wine

Nuance is important when making quality wines, Eric says,
highlighting each of his unusual varietals behind the bar. Tasting a
good wine is like listening to a symphony. We dont want to over-power
the palette, but understand what went into it. He stands firm in his
conviction that the vineyard makes the wine.
Eric Cross Winery offers an unforgettable moment in time that
delights all the senses. Come see for yourself what makes this place so
special. >> MONICA L. DASHWOOD

Calistoga
August Briggs:
Leave Pretention at the Door
Make their your way to the northern edge of Napa Valley into
the quaint town of Calistoga, a treat is in store the minute you walk
through the door of August Briggs.
The small, airy tasting room right on the main drag of Lincoln
Avenue is home to the winerys trove of eclectic varietals. With
a continually rotating tasting menu, visitors will find plenty of
options from which to choose. Some of those varietals might be
rare to Napa Valley, like the Charbono, a complex red that grows on
only 86 acres in California.
Co-owner Matt Gasco said the winery is turning its focus
more on rare varietals, like Charbono, because wine drinkers
are becoming more experimental. Though the standards like
Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon will always be in large
demand, the younger generation of wine drinkers, as with food, are
into trying new things.
Everyone knows Cab is good in Napa, he said. But theres so
much else. We can grow so many varietals here, and do them well.
We want to showcase that.
Some of the rarer wines August Briggs is dabbling in are Pinot
Blanc and Pinot Meunier, plus a few different takes on Pinot Noir
and Zinfandel. In all, August Briggs makes 15 wines from 11
varieties, all sourced from local, single vineyards.
But since the winerys production is small, the best way to secure
a bottle of your favorite wine is to join the wine club. Members
have priority purchasing power for the small-batch wines that dont
always make it to the tasting room before selling out. They also
receive discounts, special promotions and invitations to winery BENNETT LANE

Stags Leap Districts

Vineyard to Vintner Weekend, April 28-30
Each year, member wineries of the Stags Leap District Winegrowers open
their doors for one weekend to give visitors exclusive access to their wines,
their vineyards and the people behind this iconic wine region. Vineyard
to Vintner is a weekend of intimate opportunities to taste world renowned
Cabernets while mingling with winery owners and winemakers. Visitors are
given personal and backstage access to private homes and historic wineries,
with private tours, barrel tastings and food pairings, all set amongst the
glorious vineyards and billowing Palisades of the Stags Leap District. Simply
put, this annual weekend is packed with experiences that visitors cant find
anywhere else.
Vineyard to Vintner commences Friday night with four distinct dinners.
Each 45-person dinner is co-hosted by several vintners and is prepared by a
famed Napa Valley culinary talent. The 2017 Friday dinner venues include
Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos Du Val, Shafer Vineyards, Silverado Vineyards
and Stags Leap Winery. Co-hosts dig deep into their cellars to share their
most cherished library wines for this food and wine experience.
On Saturday, individual winery open houses provide the ultimate back-
stage pass to the associations member wineries. Guests spend the day
up close and personal with vintners, visiting private homes and historic
wineries alike, while enjoying special access to wines and food pairings that
are not available to the general public.
The Vineyard to Vintner weekend concludes Sunday with a fabulous,
vintner-hosted farm-to-table buffet lunch amid the sprawling acres of
majestic views at Regusci Winery Ranch. Guests also taste a sneak preview
of the not-yet-released 2014 Stags Leap District Appellation Collection.
Vineyard to Vintner hosts include: Baldacci Family Vineyards, Chimney
Rock Winery, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos Du Val, Ilsley Vineyards, Lindstrom
Wines, Malk Family Vineyards, Odette Estate, Pine Ridge Vineyards,
Quixote Winery, Regusci Winery, Shafer Vineyards, Silverado Vineyards,
Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Stags Leap Winery, Steltzner Vineyards, and Taylor
Family Vineyards. Packages are available for one, two or three days allowing
guests to experience the entire weekend or to enjoy one glorious day.
Vineyard to Vintner is truly an exclusive opportunity to taste and
discover the Stags Leap Districts distinctive and iconic wines, as well as
to meet the talent behind these wines. Its a weekend that Cabernet lovers
and appellation loyalists look forward to year after year. You can find more
information and purchase tickets, at http://www.stagsleapdistrict.com/v2v.php

I had the pleasure of having dinner at the Bay View

sweetheart and we were both very impressed with the
attentive service and off-the-hook entrees. I ordered the
Cioppino and it was chock-full of lobster, crabmeat,
mussels, clams, prawns and local seafood, swimming in a
saffron-infused broth and served with warm, toasty garlic
bread. It was amazing! My sweetheart ordered the Osso

polenta. OMG! The portions of both entrees were generous
(Youll probably ask for a doggie bag) and absolutely
delicious. We were so full that we had to decline dessert!
