designatearegionlocatedtothenorthwestofMedia."[3]

Etymology [ edit ]

ThenameMatieneisbelievedtoberelatedtoMitanniwhichwas
foundedbyanIndoAryanrulingclassgoverning
theHurrianpopulation.[4]ThenameMatienewasappliedalsoto
theneighboringLakeMatianus(LakeUrmia)locatedimmediately
totheeastoftheMatienipeople.

TheMannaeanswhoprobablyspokeaHurroUrartianlanguage,
weresubduedbytheScythoKimmeriansduringtheseventhand
eighthcenturiesBC.Matienewasultimatelyconqueredby
theMedesinabout609BCE.

MatienebecameasatrapyoftheMedianEmpireuntilthePersian
conquest,whenalongsideoftheKartveliantribesSaspiresand
Alaradians(remnantsofUrartians)itbecameapartoftheXVIII LocationofMatiene
satrapyoftheAchaemenidEmpire.

Geography and population [ edit ]

ThelandofMatienewastwicethesizeofArmeniaanditwas
surroundedtothenorthbyArmenia,totheeastbyMedia,tothe
southbySusiana,andtothewestbyAssyria.Itschiefcitywas
MatiatiaroundLakeVan.ThereseemstobeanotherMatiane
locatedincentralAsiaMinor.

CimmeriansweresaidtohaveoriginatedfromtheMatiani
byHerodotus,movingwestintoAnatoliaalongthesouthshoreof
theBlackSea.Herodotusalsosaidthatlater,inMediantimes, LocationofMatiene,southofArmenia
therewasasecondsitecalledMatiene,alongtheeasternshoreof
theHalysriverinnorthwesternCappadociaacrosstheriverfrom
thePhrygians.[5]Hestatedtheyworethesameuniformas
thePaphlagoniansintheMedianandPersianarmies,meaning
theirunitswerecombinedwiththePaphlagonians.Itisnotatall
clearwhetherthesewesternMatieniweredescendantsofthe
Cimmerians,agroupofPaphlagoniansjustcalledbythisname,
actual(eastern)MatieniwhomigratedwestfromMatieneontheir
own,oraMedianmilitarycolonyontheborderwithPhrygiaand
latertheLydianempire.
