Location in one simple step.

4 Key Features of the Nielsen Answers desktop

Installer
As well as installing Nielsen Answers desktop the Nielsen Answers desktop Installer performs
a number of useful actions and supports a number of configurable options. These are
summarized below, with further details given later in this document where needed.
Pre-requisites The Nielsen Answers desktop Installer performs a check to see if the
pre-requisites it needs are installed. It will install any that are found to be missing. For more
information on pre-requisites, see Installing the Pre-requisites, page 29 which includes an
important note regarding OWC 11 and Office 2007/2010 installation.
System Check The Nielsen Answers desktop Installer will check to make sure the Operating
System and the installed Office version are compatible with the version of Nielsen Answers
desktop being installed.
Silent Installation It is possible to configure the Nielsen Answers desktop installer so no
user interaction is required to install the software. A splash screen is shown to indicate the
software is being installed. For more information see APPENDIX 1 Configuration Options for
the Nielsen Answers desktop Installer, page 24.

information see APPENDIX 3 Installing Nielsen Answers desktop Without Using the Installer,

12.2.3 Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack

To help ensure that you can exchange documents between Microsoft Office releases,
Microsoft developed a Compatibility Pack for the Office Word, Office Excel, and Office
PowerPoint file formats. This Compatibility Pack works with files created by Office 2010 and
the 2007 Office system allowing you to open and save them in the Office 2003.
The Office 2007 compatibility pack does not support objects such as the Nielsen Answers
Interface to Office range. If you open an Office Excel 2007 or 2010 file containing Interface to
Office ranges in Office 2003 using the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack the ranges will
not be recognized by Nielsen Answers Interface to Office.
Note: Do not save these files. Doing so will permanently lose the range information.

12.2.4 Answers Interface to Office Version Compatibility

Nielsen Answers Interface to Office is the Nielsen Answers desktop add-in to Microsoft Excel.
It is installed with Nielsen Answers desktop.

12.2.4.1 Range Layouts
With the release of Nielsen Answers desktop 7.3 the layout of information in Nielsen Answers
Interface to Office ranges was changed to support the Descriptions feature. This affects
ranges where dimensions are nested in the rows.
Interface to Office ranges created with releases prior to 7.3 do not need any adjustment. They
will retain their original layout and continue to work as before. However, the Descriptions
function is disabled for such ranges to avoid breaking any dependencies on the older layout.
Below are two ranges created in Nielsen Answers desktop illustrating the new layout
introduced in 7.3. The first has two paged dimensions (Market and Fact). The second has the
Market and Product dimensions nested in the rows and the Fact and Period dimensions
nested in the columns.

Below are the same ranges shown in the layout used in releases prior to 7.3. The differences
are highlighted.

12.2.4.2 Range Defect Resolved in 7.4 onwards

In Nielsen Answers desktop 7.3.x refreshing ranges with dimensions nested in the rows would
clear additional cells beneath the range. The number of rows affected would equal the number
of elements reported in the outer dimension. An example is given example below to illustrate
this.
The upper range has been refreshed and has deleted the entries in the cells beneath the
range. Note however that the lower range icon is still present and if the lower range is
refreshed its data is restored.
Upper range refreshed clears additional cells (green)

Lower range refreshed data in cleared cells restored

From version 7.4 onwards this defect is addressed for affected ranges (that is ones created in
7.3.x and with nested rows). The correction is effected upon the second refresh of the ranges
in question. The first refresh will clear the cells as before but the second and subsequent
refreshes will not.

13 APPENDIX 1 Configuration Options for the
Nielsen Answers desktop Installer
The Nielsen Answers desktop Installer is usually pre-configured to support your requirements
by the local Nielsen office that provided the installation media. However, you may wish to
adjust its configuration and this section provides information to help you do that. Alternatively
contact your Nielsen contact for help.
The Nielsen Answers desktop Installer uses a configuration file to provide instructions on how
some aspects of the installation of Nielsen Answers desktop should be performed. This
section describes the configuration options available and how they can be selected.

13.1 The Install Settings file

The configuration file used by the Nielsen desktop Installer can be found in the folder Client
Setup on the installation media. It is called Answers_Install_Settings.xml.
It is an XML file and may be edited with a text editor or an XML file editor. It is recommended
this file is only changed by someone competent in editing XML files.

13.2 The Install Settings

The table below explains the purpose and choices available for each of the settings available
in the Answers_Install_Settings.xml file.
<Company_Name> The name of the organization Nielsen Answers desktop is to be
installed at.
<Install_Folder> The drive and path where the Nielsen Answers desktop program files
will be installed.
<Content_Location> This defines the path where the users Default Content Location will be
created.
It is very IMPORTANT that user has full read/write access to this
location.
If the user already has a Default Content Location being used by an
existing installation of Nielsen Answers desktop then this parameter is
ignored and the existing Default Content Location will continue to be
used unless the <Content_Overide> parameter is set to TRUE.
If the <Content_Overide> parameter is set to TRUE then this
parameter is used.
When the path is within a user My Documents location use
#MYDOCUMENTS# in the path. It will be replaced at run time with
each users specific My Documents path.
NOTE: It is important to include My Nielsen Answers\ at the end
of the path. For example:
#MYDOCUMENTS#\My Nielsen Answers\
<Content_Package> The path and name of the Nielsen package file (.NCPF) file being
used to deliver content. This can be a local drive, a mapped network
drive or a path using UNC syntax. Examples:
\\euoxisi01\swinst$\NAD76\content\ packedfile.ncpf
F:\Nielsen\contentfiles\packedfile.ncpf
<Content_Overide> This flag affects installation on a PC that already has Nielsen Answers
desktop installed.
If FALSE the existing Default Content Location is used.
If TRUE then the value in the <Content_Location> setting is used to
create a new Default Content Location for the user.

13.3 Legacy Content Installation Techniques

Earlier version of the Nielsen Answers Installer provided two mechanisms for delivering when
installing / upgrading Nielsen Answers desktop. These are still supported but only apply to
Default Content Location created and or identified at installation time.
This section is included to describe how to use them. However, the recommended approach is
to use the newer package file mechanism see <Content_Package> in 13.2 above.

13.3.1 Variable Content Installation

You can deliver different content based on a command line parameter used with the Nielsen
Answers desktop Installer.
This may be useful if you want one set of installation media to support a variety of different
content delivery scenarios (e.g. different countries, or different user groups).
No backup is made of the existing content so files may be overwritten without warning.
To use this feature the Nielsen Answers desktop Installer must be run from the command line
or from a batch file. The command line would be of the form:
Nielsen Answers Desktop.exe country=XXX
Where XXX is a folder under the Client Setup folder of the install media containing the
content to be copied at installation time. The example below shows three such directories, FR,
GB and IRE.

The content found in the named folder will be copied into the Default Content Location.

13.3.2 Fixed Content Installation

This content installation feature uses the same content for every installation.
To use it you must create a folder called My Nielsen Answers under the Client Setup folder
on the installation media. Put the content files and folders in this directory as they need to
appear in the Default Content Location.
Once Nielsen Answers desktop installation is complete the Installer makes a copy of the
existing Default Content Location calling it My Nielsen Answers OCI Backup and then copies
the files and folders from the installation media My Nielsen Answers folder under the Client
Setup folder.

14.4.3 Using Nielsen Answers.msi with command line
parameters and MSIEXEC
This section explains the installation settings that can be configured using command line
parameters in conjunction with the Windows MSIEXEC command.
For more information on using MSIEXEC see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314881.
MSIEXEC accepts many command line parameters. For example, /qn is used to suppress the
user interface that would otherwise be shown. This is sometimes referred to as silent mode.
Running the MSI package in silent mode installs the product using all the default install
settings. It acts as if the user clicks the Next button on all installation steps without changing
the defaults. The defaults can be set using command line parameters that are listed here.

Command line parameter Setting

USERNAME User Name

COMPANYNAME Organization Name

INSTALLDIR Program destination folder

CONTENTDIR Default Content Location
ACN_EXE_TYPE Modules installed

ADDLOCAL Feature selection

REMOVE Feature de-selection

ACN_CONTENT_PKG Content Package

CONTENTDIR_OVERRIDE Content Override flag

14.4.3.1 MSI Command line parameters

Silent Mode
To install Nielsen Answers desktop without displaying any of the installation dialogs use
MSIEXEC /qn parameter
Example: msiexec /i D:\Nielsen Answers.msi /qn
To learn more about Msiexec.exe command line parameters, refer to the following web page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314881
NOTE: On Windows 8.0 when using the "/qn" parameter the install may fail. This may be due
to a Microsoft Windows 8.0 security setting.
Either:
Place the command line in a batch file and run the batch file using the "Run as
Administrator" option.
OR
Change the Windows Group Policy setting "Run all Administrators in Admin approval
mode" to the Disable state.

Enable Logging mechanism

In order to enable logging the installation results, add the MSIEXEC command line parameter
/l followed by the log file name to the msiexec.exe command line call.
Example: msiexec /i D:\Nielsen Answers.msi /l C:\Example.log
To learn more about msiexec.exe command line parameters, refer to the following web page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314881

configuration files (e.g. license file, Business Applications, dictionaries, etc). It needs to be a
location where the user has full read, write, delete and modify access (e.g. the user's My
Documents folder).
In order to set the location of the Default Content Location folder through the command line
install, use the parameter CONTENTDIR. If the users My Documents folder is the desired
location use #MYDOCUMENTS# to represent the My Documents path as this location varies
by user.
This parameter has no effect on the location of the Default Content Location for an existing
installation of Nielsen Answers desktop setting unless used in conjunction with the Content
Override parameter CONTENTDIR_OVERRIDE.
Example: msiexec /i D:\Nielsen Answers.msi CONTENTDIR=#MYDOCUMENTS#\My
Nielsen Answers\
Note: Nielsen Answers desktop does not expect the Default Content Location to be in use by
more than one user at a time. For performance reasons the Default Content Location should
be on a local drive.
Content Override
If you want to change the location of the Default Content Location for an existing installation of
Nielsen Answer desktop you can do so using the command line parameter
CONTENTDIR_OVERRIDE.
If this is set to FALSE the location of the Default Content Location will remain as before.
If this is set to TRUE the location of the Default Content Location will be set to the value given
for the CONTENTDIR parameter.
Example: msiexec /i D:\Nielsen Answers.msi CONTENTDIR=#MYDOCUMENTS#\My
Nielsen Answers\ CONTENTDIR_OVERRIDE=TRUE
Note: Changing the location of the Default Content Location this way does not move or copy
files from the existing Default Content Location.

Office 2010 protected view

Cause Office 2010 File is being opened in protected view.

When is Protected View used?
By default, files open in Protected View if any one of the following conditions is
true:

Files opened from the Internet: When a file is downloaded from the
Internet the Windows Attachment Execution Service places a marker in
the files alternate data stream to indicate it came from the Internet

zone. When a Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint
file is opened and has this marker it will open in Protected View.

opened from Microsoft Outlook 2010 it will open in Protected View.
Administrators will be able to configure if they want all attachments to
open in Protected View or just those sent from senders outside their
Exchange environment.

feature that scans files for file format exploits. If Office File Validation
detects a possible exploit or some other unsafe file corruption, the file
opens in Protected View.
