Recognize your own habits and,
if possible, remove potential
threats to your serenity. For ex-

“You don’t want to be stressed

Simplifying the finishes and col-
ors in a room also has a soothing
effect, Silvasy says.
She recommends using differ-
ent shades of the same color, and
going for a consistent finish on
lights, drawer pulls and other
hardware details. While nature-
based colors are ideal for a home
spa space, red accented with black
is a popular Eastern-inspired
theme that evokes tranquility.
With a calmer atmosphere in
place, designate a spot for spa
time – even if it’s just a comfort-
able chair with an end table, or an
unused corner with a fluffy throw
rug, a mess of pillows and a pile of
magazines. In her home, Silvasy
adds to the ambience with a mos-
quito net draped around a chair.
Include a basket with spa supplies
you’ll actually use such as a favor-
ite face mask or nail polish shade.
A spa experience can be de-
fined by a scent – whether musky,
Oriental or fresh and green. Silva-
sy prefers low-maintenance reed
diffusers over candles, which in-
troduce the stress of remember-
ing to put them out or making
sure wax doesn’t drip.
Lavender, chamomile and euca-
lyptus are spa favorites that pro-
vide a soft background aroma,
while strong fragrances such as
vanilla and citrus can be overpo-
wering, Silvasy says.
A trick from the steam rooms of
California spas is to place river
rocks – available at Michael’s and
other craft stores – in a pretty
bowl and infuse them with a cou-
ple drops of an essential oil.
“Put it in a corner of the shower
and when it heats up, it will fra-
grance the entire room,” Silvasy
Just refresh the rocks with a

“After putting a sheet and com-
forter on your bed, put another

Could the shade of your walls perk up
your energy or ease stress? Here’s how a
few colors might affect mood and well-be-
ing, according to Catherine Poole, an ex-
pert in color and the human response and
a spokesperson for Freshaire Choice paint.
Blue: Eases stress and tension.
Yellow: Energizes; combats Seasonal
Affective Disorder and lethargy.
Green: Nurturing; balancing; encourages
Red: Helps with circulation and sore
muscles; provides strength and energy.
Indigo: Calms overactive minds.
Orange: Encourages vibrancy, humor
Violet: Excites imagination; accelerates
Pink: Color of self-love; defuses volatile

Honey has a mild bleaching

color-treated or darker hair, use
dark molasses. Put the oil and

of these spa-worthy recipes – using basic items from the pantry
