The National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants is used to
determine what services will be provided to older Americans in need.

Trump wants the survey to stop gathering information about

It’s a first step in erasing the LGBT community from the American map.

We will not go quietly. We refuse to be invisible.

Macron, Le Pen advance in French presidential election
Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen on April 23 advanced to the second round of
the French presidential election.
France 24 reported Macron, who is a centrist, received 23.9 percent of the vote. Le
Pen of the far-right National Front party who campaigned on an anti-Muslim, anti-
immigrant, anti-European Union and populist platform came in second with 21.7
percent of the vote.
“You have brought me to the second round of the presidential elections,” Le Pen told
supporters in Henin-Beaumont in northern France. “From now on, I have an immense
responsibility: That of defending the French nation, it’s unity, it’s security, it’s culture, it’s
prosperity and independence.”
The election took place three days after a gunman  killed a gay police officer  and

President Trump told the Associated Press the attack — for which the so-called
Islamic State claimed responsibility — would  “probably help”  Le Pen in the election.

OUT Law honors Baltimore ‘trailblazers’
The University of Baltimore Law School’s LGBT group, OUT Law, presented
its annual COBALT awards on April 20 at the University of Baltimore with
approximately 40 in attendance. COBALT stands for Celebration of Our Baltimore
Area LGBT Trailblazers.
“We honor individuals in the greater Baltimore area for their outstanding
contributions to the LGBT community,” Robert Steininger, president of OUT
Law, told the Blade. Activist Brian Gaither and Red Emma’s, a bookstore and
coffeehouse cooperative in the Station North area of Baltimore, were recognized
in this year’s ceremony.
Safe spaces for LGBT individuals was the theme for this year’s awards.
“Brian Gaither is receiving the Mark F. Scurti award for his work as the director
of Maryland Pride Foundation of Maryland that has connected LGBT Marylanders
to safe and supportive spaces especially those in rural communities,” says
“Red Emma’s is being honored for creating a safe space where LGBT
Marylanders can have their voices heard through community-run events such
as the history of activism in LGBT neighborhoods.”
In 2007, Scurti received a Distinguished Alumni Award for his work for OUT
Law. The award has been renamed the “Mark F. Scurti Award for Outstanding
Contributions to the LGBT Community.” Scurti, a well-known gay attorney in
Baltimore’s LGBT community, is now an associate judge on the District Court for
Baltimore City.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for the work of the Pride Foundation of
Maryland and to share the 2017 COBALT Award with Red Emma’s,” Gaither told
the Blade. “We should all be working to make every last part of the country a
safe space for LGBTQ people.” The Pride Foundation of Maryland was founded
in 2014.
“The workers of Red Emma’s are honored by the award,” Ava Pipitone, one of

Activists hopeful for therapy ban in New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A county in upstate New York is considering a bill that would
ban “conversion” therapy, the Buffalo News reports.
The bill was introduced before in 2014 and 2015 but died in committee. Last
year’s version earned national news coverage because it was named PENCE
(Prevention of Emotional Neglect and Child Endangerment), a nod to Vice
President Mike pence who supports the practice.
No licensed conversion therapy centers exist in Erie County, but LGBT activists
said they are aware of informal programs locally that encourage youth who
believe they have a same-sex orientation into converting to a heterosexual
orientation. Kitty Lambert-Rudd, president of the Western New York Anti-
Violence Project, said she knows of seven, the Buffalo News reports.
Currently, anyone who practices such therapy locally cannot be held
accountable because such therapy is not illegal, advocates said.
Conversion therapy is banned in five other states, but not New York.
The proposed law, introduced by Patrick Burke (D-Buffalo), would make the
practice of conversion therapy on minors a misdemeanor crime punishable by a
fine of up to $1,000 or one year in jail.
Burke’s proposed law, which could receive bipartisan support, is still subject to
a public hearing before it can proceed to a vote by the Erie County Legislature. A
hearing has yet to be scheduled, but Burke is optimistic about the law ‘s chances
for approval.

Hawaii gay fertility bill finds opposition
HONOLULU — Health care lobbyists in Hawaii are pushing lawmakers to
kill part of a bill that would expand access to fertility treatments to same-sex
couples who want to have a child, the Associated Press reports.
They’re saying requiring insurers to cover fertility treatments for gestational
carriers that male couples rely on could lead to legal problems.
Under Hawaii law, insurers are required to cover one round of in vitro
fertilization for some married, heterosexual couples. Advocates from the gay
and lesbian community are pushing for equal access to that money-saving
benefit, the AP reports.
A Hawaii bill would extend the IVF coverage mandate to same-sex couples
and single women. It also would make Hawaii the first state to require coverage
for surrogate mothers, which could help male couples who need a surrogate to
carry a child.
But health care lobbyists are pushing to remove part of the bill that extends
the coverage mandate to gestational carriers, saying Hawaii law has no legal
protections for surrogates because the state law is silent on the issue. They say
the state should write laws on gestational carriers before making insurers cover
procedures for the group, the AP article notes.
Hawaii is one of eight states that require insurance companies to cover in vitro
fertilization, a costly procedure in which a doctor retrieves eggs from a woman,
combines them with sperm from a man and then implants an embryo into a
woman’s uterus, the AP reports.

LGB patients more open than previously thought
NEW YORK — Patients in the United States may be much more willing to
disclose their sexual orientation to the staff in a hospital emergency room than
health professionals think, a new study reported on by Live Science suggests.
The researchers found that about 78 percent of health professionals surveyed
thought that patients would not wish to divulge information about sexual
orientation n the emergency room. However, only 10 percent of patients who
the researchers surveyed said they would refuse to provide this information
when asked in this setting, according to the findings, published this week in the
journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
The findings are important, the researchers said, because other research has
shown that LGBT people widely reported health disparities for varying reasons.
These findings demonstrate that there can be a difference between what
health professionals perceive and what patients want, think and prefer, said
lead study author Dr. Adil Haider, a surgeon and a director of the Center for
Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

The body is unpredictable and even when you do everything right, sometimes the Body Plastic Surgery

that you are achieving outside of physical achievements that will keep you feeling
engaged and motivated throughout your fitness journey.
While the rest of the fitness world is going to flood you with magazine articles and
YouTube videos on how be the hottest girl or gurl at the beach, I’m going to challenge
you to look a little deeper and teach you how to turn your summer goals into lifestyle
intangible goals. Today let’s tap into my top four intangible results that you get from
dedicating yourself to getting fitter and healthier.
Confidence galore — Confidence is my number one most important reason
to start and stay in a workout program. I’m talking real confidence that is built by
repeatedly trying new things and accomplishing things that you aren’t sure you can
achieve. Like lifting that weight that is heavier than you’re used to lifting, completing
that extra mile on your run or going into that inversion in yoga class when upside
down is not your forte. It’s better to build confidence by overcoming plateaus you
didn’t think you could than focusing on physique results alone.
Stepping outside your comfort zone — In the gym, as in real life, the comfort
zone is the place where no growth happens. If you do the same workout at the same
weight in the same order of course, your progress will halt. This rule also applies
true for your personal and emotional growth. It’s always a great moment when I see
clients start to embrace trying new things in the gym and I see it start to bleed into
their personal lives. As you are progressing through your workout, reflect on how
you have changed emotionally to be more comfortable with the uncomfortable. The • Laser Liposuction

too, and each time our body says quit but we find strength to push through anyway.
This resilience is what makes us live our best lives in and out of the gym so remember
• Transgender Surgeries
to reflect on how you have achieved the power of resilience as you have progressed. • Ultherapy
Consistency — Staying consistent is key to success in so many aspects of life but it’s
paramount to seeing results within your exercise program. Over my years of training
the biggest difference between those who reach their goals and those who don’t has
to be one that some stay consistent over time and the others don’t. I’ve also learned
that learning to be consistent is a skill that is built in by constantly having systems in

place to help keep you accountable. It’s always great when I have clients over years
who I remember would never do any workouts outside of our sessions who now
enjoy working out on their own. They have built up the skill set to get their workouts
in without guidance and this can be a skill of discipline that moves throughout all parts
of their life. Discipline starts in the gym and moves everywhere.
Entering dedicated exercise routine can be the catalyst to improving your
confidence, stepping out of your comfort zone, building resilience and learning
consistency. Of course, the physical benefits to exercise are always fun to see, but
remember those achievements may only surface depending on many factors. To
stay engaged, look at the gamut of improvements that you get by being part of a
consistent program.
