UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


The lesson will be on the life cycle of the butterfly, they are part of the unit on heredity, and also
can be comparable to other life cycles of the animals. The students will look at the life cycle of
the butterfly and they must understand how the butterfly grow. They will be able to put the life
cycle in the right order of the stages at stated in TN state science standard 4.0.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
They will create a word document while given a picture of the life cycle of the butterfly. They
will write down the timeline of butterfly growth, and they will write one or two paragraph about
the life cycle of the butterfly.
Students participation are important that they have a full understanding of the life cycle of the
butterfly. Also clear understanding what they have to write down in the paragraph.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State/District, Common Core Standards-

1. 0307.4.1 Sequence diagrams that illustrate various stages in the


development of an organism.

2. 0307.4.2 Create a timeline to depict the changes that occur during an


organisms life cycle.

ISTE Standard-

1. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather,


evaluate, and use information.
2. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use
information from a variety of sources and media.

MATERIALS:
Picture of the life cycle of the butterfly
Planning sheet
Computer
Word Document or Microsoft word
Paper and pencil

Technology integration, student will use the picture as a resource for the timeline they
will create in word document. They will use word document to type down the timeline,
and write a paragraph or two about the life cycle of the butterfly. They will also get to
create a fun comic about the life cycle of the butterfly that I have given the internet
access to, and they will send the link so I can look at it later when they are finish with the
project.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


I want the students to have a full understanding the life cycle of the butterfly, clear understanding
of what they have write in the timeline, and make an educational comic about the life of the
butterfly.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is built on the TN Science Standard 4.0.
We will refer to this lesson and build from it by comparing it to other life cycles of animals.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the
objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in
this course and are not a part of this lesson
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: I will ask the students to open the word document on the computer
1. I will pass the picture of the life cycle of the butterfly around to each students
2. I want them to write down the timeline growth of the butterfly
3. I want them to type down the timeline on the word document
4. If they do not understand the concept, I can explain slowly each stage of the butterfly.
5. I will tell them to create a comic strip
6. I will ask them to print the comic and will show to their classmates.
Procedures:
TEACHER PROCEDURES before computer (10 min) after looking at the planning sheet, ask
the students if they have any question regarding the life cycle of the butterfly.
STUDENT PROCEDURES students will complete the planning sheet by describing the
timeline and placing the right order of stages.

At the computer (30 min)

TEACHER PROCEDURES:
1. Have the students open Word document or Microsoft word and internet browser.
2. Direct students to the clipart website.
3. Watch the students and see if they need any help.
STUDENT PROCEDURES:
1. Open Microsoft word and internet browser.
2. Go to clipart website.
3. In word document, make a title the life cycle of the butterfly.
4. Go to page layout in MS word and click on orientation
5. Click landscape orientation
6. Click insert, then shapes
7. Click he first line you see and make the line on word document
8. Copy image and paste them on timeline in correct order of the cycle
9. Write brief paragraph on the timeline
10. Check the spelling
11. Save document
12. Print the document

TEACHER PROCEDURES: AT THE COMPUTER (30 MIN)


1. Have the students open up internet browser
2. Direct students to comic site
3. Tell them to sign up, login, and password
4. Tell them on click create and explain the direction on how to make the comic
5. Watch the students and see if they need any help

STUDENT PRCEDURES:
1. Open internet browser
2. Go to comic site
3. Type in username and password
4. Click create and choose 4 layout
5. Choose background
6. Search for the each stages of the butterfly
7. Shrink or enlarge if needed
8. Choose text box and say what you want the butterfly to say
9. You can repeat 5-8 until you got the 4 layout done
10. When finish, save comic
11. Title it Life cycle
12. Press public
13. Print the comic

AFTER COMPUTER ( 20 min)


TEACHER PROCEDURES:
1. I will show them my sample and present
2. Explain the order of the timeline
3. Let the student show their comic
4. Open floor for question
5. Explain why its important to get the stage in the correct order

STUDENT PROCEDURES:
1. Students will decide if they want to go first to show their comic
2. Students show their comic and explain the timeline
3. Explain why the life cycle of the butterfly is important to our ecosystem
Closure: Students discuss why the life cycle of a butterfly is important. They will also discuss
why we have the keep the stages in the right order. At the end of class, the student will turn in the
timeline and comic that they did in class. They will also ask any questions that they have.

EGGS- is a tiny, round, oval, usually with the fine ribs and other microscopic structures.

CATERPILLAR- is a long, worm like stage of the butterfly or moth. It has a pattern or patches, and as its
grows, it sheds its skin four or more times so it can rapidly growing.

PUPA- is the transformation stage within which the caterpillar tissues are broken down and the adult
insects structures are formed.

BUTTERFLY- is colorful butterfly or moth usually seen, it is the reproductive and mobile stage of the
species.
