I will be focusing on poverty. I chose this topic because I find it important that young students
are shown the reality of people in poverty. My students will be focusing on job opportunities and
how they can help lift people out of poverty. This topic relates to sustainability because we all
coexist on the same planet, so if poverty continues to increase, it will be difficult for our society
to get through difficult issues as a whole. The more we help get people out of poverty, the better
chance we have at improving our society by creating more jobs.

OBJECTIVES
Describewhatyouwantstudentstoknow/beabletodoasaresultofthelesson.
Forexample,Studentswillbeableto

Students will be able to invent a technological based tool that can help create jobs for those in
poverty by researching data and presenting their invention in a whole class setting.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
Whatmeasureswillyouusetoknowifyoustudentsmettheobjectives?

I will complete journal checks to see that every student is adding the required information from
all 5 days.

I will see that students researched resources for their invention by accessing the internet and
citing sources.
All students will have a piece of technology in their invention.

PREREQUISITEKNOWLEDGE

knowledge?

Students have done research for previous essay assignments. I will refresh their minds on how to
cite their research by having the computer lab teacher give them a quick tutorial on how to cite
their information in the correct format. This tutorial will be done before they begin doing any
research.

get you to your desired goal.

TEACHINGPROCEDURES
ProceduralSteps(Stepbystepinstructionsforteachingthelesson):

Day 3: Brainstorm/research new ideas and resources to help those in poverty. Look at the
technology that is used within these resources and how to implement those in other countries.

1. Show students the 33 Buckets video. This YouTube video shows how ASU student Mark
Huerta helped create filtration systems for people to access clean water. This video will
help motivate and inspire students for their own inventions.
2. Replay the video on the :30-:35 mark, where Mark Huerta states We built filtration
systems out of local materials with the people.
3. Have students think about that quote means and its importance. Then allow the students
to discuss as a whole group their thoughts on it.
4. After the discussion, share your input on the quote. Emphasize the benefits of using some
local materials when building a tool that will be used in a different country. Have the
students think about using materials that are available in the country that they will be
choosing to focus on and integrating those materials into their invention.
5. Give students a list of countries with high poverty rates. Give them time to research these
countries on the computer then choose which country they will create their invention for.
6. The day before, students researched basic resources people in poverty have access to.
Inform students that they can used their previous findings as a guide for their own
invention, but they have to create a brand new invention that they didnt already research.
7. Students must include some type of technology piece into their invention. Explain that
they would need to know how their technology piece works in order to train the people in
their chosen country how to use it.
8. Students will be working on Strategic Thinking. Have students use and hear the term
Strategic Thinking so that they know what type of thinking they are using. After
students have worked on their research ask the students to think about the different
factors in their country that might affect the efficiency of their resource working there.
Using strategic thinking, they will be organizing a set of steps to ensure that their
resource would be the most effective in helping a family in poverty.
9. Their exit ticket for the day would be to have all of their research, ideas, and country
added into their Word document journal.
10. Instruct students to write a short essay at home explaining the technicality of how their
resource would work and its efficiency. They need to include this essay into their Word
document journal. If they dont have a computer at home they can handwrite their essay
and transfer it to a Word document during the next class day.

Strategic thinking is being able to organize a set of steps in a plan that will get you to your
desired goal. These steps are planned out strategically, knowing that they will have a direct
impact in leading you to the desired outcome. Using strategic thinking is useful in
conceptualizing sustainability challenges and potential solutions because it can help you make
the best decisions that will ultimately have the best outcome.
