CHS: The Hive
RaShidi Baker

Central High School's Diversity Squad, The

Hive, was creatively assembled by (at the
time, Junior) RaShidi Baker with the
assistance of Ms. Betty Hall in 2015. These
King and Queen Bees anonymously
emerged and astonished, not only our
school, but the entire county. The Hive
features a majority of hip hop, a touch of
majorette, contemporary, and West
African. They will continue to add more as
they grow and learn. This is the second
year of The Hives striving to set dance examples for the school and the community. The Hive
stands on their personal proverb of being disparate and to always stand out in creativity.

Principle of Central High School, Raymond Green, one of The Hives biggest supporters,
specifically encourages them to be rigorous in their training, and ensure that their sting is
worse than their buzz. The squads only mission is to give everyone a SHOW. You know when
the Hive has arrived.

Some Achievements
During the beginning of the 2016 school year, The Hive competed
against other high schools Hip Hop teams in two local competitions,
winning 3rd place, and then 1st place.
The Hive has also played a role in the community by volunteering to
clean parks and assists many businesses for charity benefits (Red Cross,
Kentucky Derby Museum,
JCPS Youth Recognition Convention)

So What happens from here

The members of The Hive help each other through
the good and the bad. They are proof I have
experienced many things (positive and negative)
over the years- which make me who I am today.
These kids have played a big role with that; they
are the KING and QUEEN bees.
The Importance of Music
Duchess Warfield

Music is a free spirited activity, which for some people can turn
into a life style. Music can be somewhat essential in peoples lives. After
the stresses of life, this calming activity lets people concentrate on the
task at hand, relieving them from their worries. Music is more than the
playing or listening to instruments; it is the feelings it gives.
Our music teachers can also play a big role in the way music affects
us. Centrals music teachers are very effective in this aspect. This is shown
in a big way in our schools music classes through great teachers. Our band
director, Mr. Cheatham, has been playing music since he was in the 1st
grade. He started by playing drums in church, starting with the bongos. His
percussion experience has very positively influenced Centrals amazing
drum line. Though he no longer
performs outside of school, he
still creates great music with
Centrals band. Mr. Cheatham loves watching his students express
themselves through the music they make. He believes that music
helps them channel their emotions in the right way. It gives them
confidence.
Another one of our music teachers who makes a difference is
our orchestra teacher, Mrs. Leach. She is diverse in her musical
experiences; she has a masters in
flute performance from the New
England Conservatory, then was
an adjunct instructor of flute at
Centre College. She has played concerts as a substitute for the Louisville
Orchestra, in the Derby Dinner Theatre orchestra, and is currently a flutist
with a local chamber orchestra called Orchestra Enigmatic. Mrs. Leach
explained that a group of people playing music gains feelings of unity and
solidarity.
We also have a chorus teacher, Mr. Williams. He began singing in
his church choir at the age of four, and started playing the piano at nine.
He attended Wittenburg University in Ohio, and the University of
Louisville, has performed in Carnegie Hall, and has conducted a Louisville
Orchestra concert. He believes that making music is a teamwork
opportunity that produces something that is far greater than the sum of
its parts. It is a skill that is good for the mind, body and soul. It inspires creativity and originality and upper
level thinking, all of which is essential to the progress of society,
music being the element that fuses them all. Though he does
not have an instrument driven class, he still plays the piano, and
even teaches some of the students how to play it through in-
school and after-school lessons. He believes that any form of
music is an outlet. This is a testament of all of our music
teachers, and is proven every day as they watch their students
grow.
There is some science behind how music affects the brain and a students success based on the music
they play or listen to. Through music, students and adults can learn a lot. Music can give people an outlet from
stresses in their lives. Music therapy is widely used in hospitals for
inpatient rehabilitation. Creating or playing music makes you
concentrate; it challenges your memory through learning different
fingering and pitches of the instrument or your voice. The
importance of music can even be broken down scientifically. Some
studies have shown that playing or listening to classical music
produces other benefits. Music can activate the side of the brain
that has been shown to bring out your intelligence. The side of the
brain that is activated is the left side. A Stanford study shows that
music engages areas of the brain which are involved with paying
attention, making predictions and updating events in our memory.
Much like expert technical skills, mastery in arts and humanities is
closely correlated to a greater understanding of language
components Musical training helps language processing, studies
show." (Baker, Mitzi. Stanford Medicine, 2015). Music has also been shown to make you more reasonable, make you
think things through and keep you more relaxed.
It has been shown that playing an instrument can strengthen muscle memory and make it easier to
grasp things when learning. With this skill, being enhanced to brain has to work harder and develop more to
be able to get this skill down packed. Because of the musical training playing, an instrument increases brain
volume and strengthens communication between brain areas. Through this, it has been shown that people
that play music are more intelligent, social, and productive in their adult lives, which usually leads to more
success throughout their lives. Speaking to some of the music teachers here at central I learned that their love
of music has effected all of them in their lives from being able to concentrating better having a great muscle
memory that helps them succeed at their jobs and be able to be a positive speaker to tell about how affective
music actually can be in the lives of people.
In conclusion, music is a very powerful thing. It has many benefits both mentally and physically that
can help students and adults in the end. Throughout history, different musicians have testified that these
benefits are true. For instance, Mozart said that playing music made him brighter. Beyond the beliefs of
musicians, these are actual scientific facts with evidence to back them up on all of the positive effects of
music. From famous musicians all the way down to the local ones at our very own high school, music can
affect the lives of anyone and everyone who partakes in it.

Music and the Brain: The Benefits of Music

A 2016 study at the University of Southern Californias Brain

and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences in
childhood can actually accelerate brain development,
particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading
skills. According to the National Association of Music Merchants
Foundation (NAMM Foundation), learning to play an
instrument can improve mathematical learning and even
increase SAT scores.

Two Genuine People
Nadyea Hall

Do you ever wonder who the lady is that walks around school with her kids? Her
name is Ms. Gallagher. She works with FMD students, which stands for
functional mental disability or functionally mentally disabled. I had the
opportunity to interview her.
The students enrolled in FMD receive speech, occupational therapy, physical
therapy, orientation and mobility, Vocational Rehabilitation and Office for the
Blind services on top of their regular IEP (Individual education plan) services.
FMD, as you know means functional mental disability, but they prefer to say
MSD, meaning moderate to serve disabilities. In order to be in class, you have to
have an IQ of 70 or below.
Ms. Gallagher says she was drawn to the special education field because she
loves helping people and advocating for those who cant advocate for
themselves. She was a peer tutor all throughout middle school and high school,
and she really enjoyed working with her disabled peers.
The special needs students do a wide range of different things when they
graduate. Some students get paid or volunteer jobs with job coaches; some go
to vocational schools, while others go to a Work Transition program. It is very
rare for her students to go to a 4yr. college.
Recently I also got the chance to interview Ms. Wilson another class that helps learning and behavior disorders, Vision
Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Autism units and Moderate to Serve. The students greatly benefit from alternate
teaching methods because they have a hard time keeping up with general education curriculum. They still learn the
same standards, they are just modified and not as many. E ach grade focuses on one subject as in 9th grade
reading, 10th is math and reading, 11th is science and writing, and 12th is social studies. They also have a reading, writing,
math, and functional IEP goal which they must work on throughout the school year. Ms. Wilsons class participates in CBI
(community based instruction). They go out into the community and volunteer, doing different jobs, like working at the
hospital, Feeders Supply, and shopping at Walmart, or bowling.
The goal of the program is to get our students to function in general education and community settings as
independently as possible. Their goal is to make sure their students to attend
some type of program after high school and can live on their own. Some
students remain with their parents, while others live in assisted facilities.
Students have the option to stay in the classroom until 18 or 21. It is more
beneficial for some students to stay until they are 21 to work on their skills
more, while others can get jobs at 18.
I asked Ms. Wilson what drew her into this job. She told me that and several
different things drew her in as a special education teacher. She grew up with
an aunt who had mild mental disability, and it frustrated her that she did not
get the services or help she needed. Special education has come a long way
over the years. She decided that she wanted to make sure that no student
went without the services and education classroom. Many things that regular
education students are capable of doing without even thinking about it, are
things that my students struggle with the most.
Ms. Wilson and Ms. Gallagher are very genuine people. They give 100% to
their students every day to help them. I respect both of them because theyre
amazing and caring teachers.
Saying Goodbye

Briana Anderson

As we close the year of school, we are losing yet another teacher

to retirement. Ms. Rodier has been teaching at Central for 30
years, and this, unfortunately is her last year here. She said,
Leaving teaching saddens me. Ive spent my entire life teaching:
Im the oldest of five kids, Ive spent 40 years in the classroom.
Even strangers love to ask teachers for help. I will miss so many
aspects of being a teacher! Reading this makes it even more real
that a fellow Yellow Jacket will no longer be here. But thats okay,
because once a Yellow Jacket always a Yellow Jacket.
I asked her what she felt would help students reach their dreams, and she said hope. She explained, Young
people believe, with every ounce of their being, that the future will be better. Its a teachers job to keep them
thinking that way. Being around such hope all the time makes it really hard to be pessimistic. I agree, because
if you dont have hope, then what you want or believe wont come true. Hope is something that helps you get
on in life.
I wondered how students can get along with each other despite their diversity. Ms. Rodier told me, CHS
students are really protective of one another, despite differences. They are curious about everyone, wanting
to learn more through others experiences. If only we could find a way to market this quality of theirs so that
everyone can learn the joy of seeing life through others eyes. I believe this is true, because as students we
may not get along all the time, but we are still close; we are a family.
We talked about student behavior and how she controls it. Ms. Rodier replied, All of our students want to be
admired, and all of their parents love them in spite of their faults. We make so much more progress when we
teach and communicate from a position of appreciation. I have been reminded of this each of time I forget
and students instantly respond with anger, rebellion and defensiveness.
Ms. Rodier and I discussed what she liked best about Central. Her response was, Teaching at Central is a
perfect job. We are surrounded by people who have the same goal, the same concerns, and the same passion
as we have. Even though our success is not measured financially, our colleagues provide great affirmation for
what we do. We are never without immediate support so that we can, in return, applaud, encourage, and
nurture our students. CHS is a great big, loving family.
I asked what the biggest benefit of being a teacher is to her, and her response was, Teaching gives instant
access to incredibly intelligent people who are experts across a wide spectrum of subjects. Im pretty sure that
that wont be part of my daily experience outside of school! Within the English department, alone, we have so
much varied (although admittedly sometimes useless) knowledge and skill, that we could probably survive on a
deserted island, or better yet, win big in the Cash Cab.
I let Ms. Rodier know that we will all miss her. She smiled as she told me, Im really glad I got to be here for
30 years! Central is a wonderful place, where magic happens every day! Then she added, I wont miss
getting up at 5 am, fire, tornado, earthquake, and bus drills. Standardized testing, 20 minute lunches and lack
of climate control. I agree with her on some of these; I wouldnt miss it either.
I hope Ms. Rodier has a great retirement, and where ever life takes her, shell remember us here at Central.
Hard Work Beats Talent Any Day!
TeShan Henry
Since when are student athletes SUPERIOR to other students? It is simply unfair to those
students who EARN good grades for a coach to request a teacher to tamper with their grades in
order to pass so theyll be able to get into games.
Say for instance, you want to work for a top-notch paying, highly competitive company.
After months of stalking the companys phone, completing the time-consuming application, and
attending an interview, you are finally offered a position. You soon become aware that an
employee hired before you was hired almost immediately due to connections, although you are
more qualified and put in so much effort. What would be your immediate reactions? This
method is completely unfair; so is changing a student athletes failing grade to a passing grade!
Coaches are literally get-out-of-jail-free cards for them. Athletes could probably go
around being insubordinate to the schools staff and rude to peers, but the coach would wave
their magical wand, and it would be like their player never did anything wrong! The point is,
changing a student grade will encourage student athletes to think, I can do anything I want
and my coach will save me. Where are the consequences? Wheres the discipline?
Isnt that part of what a coach does? Discipline? Isnt hard work in the classroom as
important, if not more important, than hard work on the field or court? Altering an athletes
grade to passing will NOT pass that athlete through life! What about when that student is
enrolled into college? How will that student comprehend COLLEGE material if he or she cant
ACTUALLY pass a HIGH SCHOOL course? Or can athletes expect the same favors when they get
to college? Doesnt discipline in the classroom, prepare one to be disciplined in ones career?
When grades are altered, students are hurt for the rest of their lives.
Are you one who feels an athletes failing grade should be changed to a passing grade so
the team will win the homecoming game? Is it fair to give someone something for nothing? Or
do you feel that changing the grade is absolutely wrong, and athletes should earn their grades?
Whatever you believe, hard work beats talent ANY DAY! Success has no short cuts!

Gerald Gurney, a former associate athletics director at the University of

Oklahoma, where he still teaches, and now the president of the Drake
Group for Academic Integrity in Collegiate Sport, said academic fraud has
become prevalent in college sports, where the eligibility and retention of star
athletes has taken on a life of its own.

"When a coach interferes with the grade assignments or the work of an

athlete, or argues on their behalf, it's a cardinal sin. It interferes with the
academic integrity of an institution," he said.

Be Thankful for School
By: Hajiya Issa

Every year, there discipline

problems in JCPS schools.
Disrespect, disruptions, fighting,
profanity are regular occurrences in
our schools. One high school had to
cancel their basketball homecoming
dance because of a fight in the
school parking lot earlier that day. A
trophy case was broken during a
fight at another high school.
Students who misbehave are taking
stealing an education from every
student in their building. Often, the
violence starts outside of school and carries over into the school
building. Kids learn to act this way from the adults around them, and
then waste their time in school.
There have been young people all throughout history and all
around the world who wish they could have a chance at the education
that students at Central are wasting. Think of the Little Rock Nine. All
they wanted was to go to school to get an equal education, but people
in the community threatened them on the way into the school and
inside the building. They did not fight back because they knew that
learning was more important than violence. Some students would
rather harm others than learn. What would we do if couldnt go to
school that easily, or if we had to fight to go to school, or if we got beat
at school? Some kids have to go through all of those things just to have
the opportunity to go. When they do go, they learn, they focus on their
education, and their education only.
Students who want to learn also can't because their education is
being taken away from them because there fellow students want to
goof off and bring drama that is not necessary to school. There is a girl
named Malala Yousafzai who fought for girls to be able to go to schools
in Pakistan, and she got shot in the
face by the Taliban because they
believe that girls should not get an
education. After Malala got shot, she
said, I dont want revenge on the
Taliban, I want education for the
sons and daughters of the Taliban.
All we have to do is wake up in
the morning and go to school, for
free, but I guess that is too much for
some students to handle. African
Americans used to fight to go to
school and they were victorious, and
they actually wanted to go to school.
Women around the globe are fighting for that right every day, and they
are winning that battle little by little. But now I hear so many kids who
dont have to fight to go to school say, I hate school, I dont know why
I have to go to school. We have a great opportunity, so lets take
advantage of that and go to school to learn so we can all have
successful futures.
The Baby Project
Paw Ray Moo

Teens need to protect themselves from getting pregnant at a young age, because taking care
of a baby is not easy; its a lot of responsibility. After having three days of the fake baby my
teacher gave me, I know that I cant take care of a real one at this point in my life. The fake
one really annoyed me and I couldnt do anything or go anywhere because of it.
At first, I thought it would be a fun experience, but after having it for three days I do not want
to have a real baby. It was hard for me; I tried really hard to care for the baby, but I got little
sleep and a lot of frustration. Sometimes the baby would not stop crying, even when I gave it
the bottle or changed its diaper. This was probably easier than a real baby who would need so
much more than a bottle and diapers. I wasnt myself anymore! I looked like a crazy person; at
some point, I was crying AND laughing at the fact that it was fake and I had to take care of it
like a real baby.
Some of my classmates said that they put the baby in another room because they just couldnt
take the crying. They told me that the babies take so much of your time, patience, and
effort, that they made a decision that they dont want to have babies until they are older.
Unless there is someone to help you care for the baby, you may have to drop out of school.
Because babies need a lot of stuff, you might need to work. You cant just depend on your
parents, even if they are willing to help. Its your responsibility, and you will have to work it
out.
Having baby as a teen is also bad for the baby. Babies of teens are likely to have low birth
weight. This can lead to death of the infant, blindness, deafness, and mental illness. Having a
child that might have those medical
problems would be really hard on both
the mom and the baby. Handicapped
babies will definitely stress out the
mom even more. Most teenagers dont
have any idea how to take care of a
baby with a handicap.
Education for teens about sex,
relationships, pregnancy, and parenthood will help teens from getting pregnant and warm
them about how much it can impact their lives.
Gotta Love Them 90s: My Favorite TV Screenings
TeShan Henry

You were born in the last year of the 90s, so youre basically not even a 90s baby, my two younger
sisters, 12 and 15 years old, tell me when I tease them about being 2000 babies. Unfortunately, my parents
did give birth to me in August of 1999. I just slightly missed Biggie and Tupac, Kurt Cobains, boom box, cone
bras, overalls, Gameboys, DunkAroos, and even Michael Jordans career; all of which makes my birth time a
bitter disappointment! Supposedly, the 90s was one of the most fun decades to be raised in, and although I
missed approximately 9 years and 8 months of the era, I am fortunate enough to be able to resurrect that
period through music and screenings. Which leads me to the one thing I appreciate dearly about the 90s: the
screenings.
The 90s is full of satires, classic movies, and iconic cartoons. Most of the TV shows from that era ran
for nearly a decade due to their national popularity. I think the 90s had the most entertaining movies and TV
shows. In fact, if I had the capability to travel back in time, I would zap to the 90s to get a feel what its like to
be a part of the most entertaining screenings.
In 1990, I would star as the leading role in the Christmas classic, Home Alone. After my parents, uncle,
and two younger sisters mistakenly leave me out on our holiday trip to Paris, I am thrilled at the realization
that I have the house to myself until a homeless couple tries to break into the house. It becomes my duty to
protect my home, the gifts, myself, and also to fight off the unfortunate Bonnie and Clyde. On that note, I
actually be comforting, but how many families still even take the time to eat together every night?
Next, I would travel to be amongst the rugrats in the iconic TV show, Rugrats (1991-2004). The
adventures would never end with Chuckie, Tommy, Phil and Lil; despite, Angelicas attempts to always ruin the
giggles. As a rugrat, I befriend both her and the other rugrats. She and I have tea parties, play dress up, and
play with Cynthia (Angelias favorite doll) together. I also keep her from bothering Tommy and Chuckie so
much. As a rugrat, dull doesnt even exist. All of our adventures are good natured. Nobody bullies or hurts
anyone else like we see so often today.
Finally, I would zap on to my all-time favorite comedy, Martin (1992-1997). Martin and Gina are the
definition of cutest couple. Loving, goofy, and territorial is the perfect description of the pair. Martin tends
to often find himself in sticky situations when hanging with his buddies, Tommy and Cole. As a character in
this satire, I would be the couples marriage therapist. I manage to keep the couple together. The couple
comes to me about problems as big as Martin losing his vow ring
(which he should never have taken off) to things as small as Martin
leaving the toilet seat up after using it. With Martin and Ginas
comedic personalities, I wouldnt be able to find the chill button
on laughter! Maybe therapist me could help make marriage
fashionable again.
But sadly, I WAS born in 99, and these delusional,
idealistic thoughts of traveling back to the 90s to be amongst the
screening characters, because I find them that darn interesting, are
somewhat far-fetched. Although, that fact doesnt stop me from
imagining. If I could just travel back to the missed-out Paris visit,
Cynthia, and relationships as cute as Martin and Ginas, I wouldnt
know boredom. I may still be a teenager, but Im already nostalgic
for the past!
How We (Muslims) Spend
the Beginning of Our Summer
Maryan Abdikadir

As soon as summer starts, many students are happy to get out of school and start planning for their
vacations, but for me and some other Muslims, we dont plan our summer until the end of Ramadan.
This holiday is celebrated at the beginning of the 9th Islamic, at the sighting of the crescent moon. The
actual date changes a little each year, but generally falls late in May. Ramadan is a month where we fast
from sunrise to sunset. Sounds terrifying, right? But not for us. Its more than just about food; we view it
as a time to purify the soul and refocus attention on God.

Muslims fast to get closer to God, and to keep them from doing things that they are forbidden to do
while fasting, like drugs, gossiping, or using bad language, which is harder for some people not to do
during the other months. Fasting is also obligatory. In Islam there are five pillars that are required to
be done, as a Muslim, in order to live a good and responsible life. One of the five is swam, or fasting,
so as a Muslim you are required to fast during the month of Ramadan. Those who are sick, traveling,
pregnant, old, very young, and on their menstruation arent required to fast, but unless you are young
or too old to fast, youll have to make it up whenever you can.

I started fasting when I was like 8 but I gave up right away. I tried again when I was 10, but my grandma
told me that I was too young and should stop. Since children are still growing, many dont start fasting
until puberty. Some parents like to prepare their children, so they may start a little younger. Then it
wouldnt be so hard for them when they get older. Many of us beginners have trouble learning to
control our mouths and temper, but as you understand the meaning of fasting, and how important it is,
over time, it wont be a trouble for you. During this month its also important to spend time with your
family, as only during the month of Ramadan, we eat together as a family. Many other days, busy
parents eat separately. Its not a requirement to eat as a family during Ramadan, it is good to do so.

Just like its important to put your focus on the Quran (holy book), you should watch less T.V, and use
your phones less. You should also break your relations with anyone (girlfriend/boyfriend) who isnt your
spouse. You should also spend your free time at the mosque rather than playing sports, and attend the
prayers, such as Taraweeh. During this month its also important to make donations and help others out,
as you know what its like not to have food in your stomach all day.
After the end of Ramadan, we have the holiday Eid al-Fitr, where we come together as a family and
friends, and celebrate
through the morning and The Five Pillars consist of:
night. Ramadan may seem
like a complicated month to Shahadah: sincerely reciting the Muslim
you, but it wont hurt to ask profession of faith.
any Muslim that you know Salat: performing ritual prayers in the proper way
more about it. Its better to five times each day.
ask, than stay confused and Zakat: paying an alms (or charity) tax to benefit
curious. the poor and the needy.
Sawm: fasting during the month of Ramadan.
Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca.
Give yourself a summer vacation from cooking and try one of
these tasty and inexpensive teen-friendly restaurants!

Texas Road House

The promise of mouth-watering, home-made rolls that made my mouth water. Walking
to go be seated you see all the peanuts all on the ground where people just threw them there
from the big barrels they have all around the restraint. Where seated all the way in the back by
the break room for all the people that work there. The waiter was a nice guy welled dress, he
asked use for our drinks. I order an Arnold Palmer, the drink was delicious it wasnt that sweet,
both of the drinks was mixed equally. I ordered a medium rare sirloin 8oz, grilled shrimp, loaded
potato (cheese bacon), and brown rice. My date orders the same thing but she had broccoli, and
corn. The food came out hot and only took a good 10-15 minutes to happen. The food was
delicious the steak wasnt dry and the cheese was melted on the potato, the shrimped was grilled
and had this sauce they had made that made it ten times better. The rice wasnt dry, it had this
Cajun taste to it. This is the perfect place to get a great steak and impress your date!

Golden Corral
If you want some good fried chicken and some good, hot, crispy, salty, fries, you should head
down to Golden Corral. Golden Corral has great food. Lots of it, because its a buffet. They have just
about everything! Pizza, steak, fish, mac and cheese, corn, fruit salads, green salads, mashed potatoes,
ribs, pork chops, fried rice, green beans, and thats just a tiny bit of what you can choose from. They also
have good deserts: a chocolate fountain, brownies, white chocolate, tons of different toppings, cake,
pie, hot chocolate, cookies, and ice cream. All of it is so, so good! I had chicken, mac and cheese, fries,
brownies and ice cream. Golden Corrals service is nice because the waiters are nice. They keep your
drink refilled and keep asking if they can get anything else for you. They keep the restaurant very clean.
The tables are wiped often, and the floor is swept regularly. The bathroom is sparkling. If you dont feel
like cooking today, go to Golden Corral. When you get there, you will be glad you went!

Chilis
Before you even walk in the front door, you can smell the grilled chicken. Once inside, waiters
swoosh past with food on sizzling plates, making your mouth water. Our well dressed and polite waiter
seated us in the bar, so we could watch the football game, took our drink order and reappeared with the
Arnold Palmers that both my date and I ordered. They were mixed the way I like them. I ordered Cajun
chicken with pasta, and wow! It was hot, both heat and seasoning, and tasty. My date had shrimp with
her chicken for only $3 extra. Our food was delivered quickly, and our server
was friendly. The atmosphere is lively. There are many food selections: burgers,
ribs, steaks, chicken, and lots of Tex Mex items like tacos and tortillas. They also
have a nice choice of desserts. I got both meals for $20, because they were
having a special. Dont worry, though, they have specials often.
The Summer
Hajiya Issa
My summer is not like everybody elses. I travel a lot during the summer, because we
dont go to visit each other during the holidays, so we go during the summer. Sometimes it is to
just visit, and other times it is for special events, like weddings or graduations, plus I have family
everywhere. It is fun. I enjoy traveling from state to state, but staying here in Louisville,
Kentucky, is not bad either, and I know this because I did not always travel. I used to stay in
Louisville all the time. Let me tell you about some fun things to do right here in town.

During the summer Louisville can be fun whether you are with family, or just out having
fun with friends. There are many things to do. You can take tours, like at the Kentucky Derby
Museum at Churchill Downs. There are so many different Museums, so you have options. There
are also historic places to visit, like Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, Muhammed Ali Center,
and The Louisville Palace. If you get stuck babysitting your younger brothers or sisters, they
would enjoy the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Kingdom, and Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere. There are
also lots of things to do on the Ohio River, like ride the Belle of Louisville, or play at the
Waterfront Park.
Louisville may not be a famous city like Los Angeles or Chicago, but it still has a lot of fun
things to do. If you dont want to be in Louisville, but want to be in Kentucky, you can go to
other cities. Lexington has the Loudoun House, known as the largest Gothic Revival building in
the state. There is also the capital of the state, Frankfort, which is where you can find the
Governors Mansion. And dont forget Fort Knox, which is a military base which was used during
the civil war.

Things to do in Louisville
Jermaine Beaver

Many of my peers in school are always asking, Where is a safe place for
me and my friends to bike ride? I always get a happy look on my face when I get
asked this question. Its nice hearing young people like myself doing outside
activities, instead of being on social media all day. I am going to give you a few
biking trails that are fun and safe.
The best place for biking is the Big Four Bridge and its parking lot; it has a
very beautiful view. From on the bridge, you can see the whole waterfront, and
far up and down the river. Its also a great workout riding your bike from Louisville
to Indiana. If you like riding your bike at night then this is the place for you. At
night the bridge lights up with different colors; it also plays music. Theres very
good parking and bike fix-it stations. On the Indiana side, theres an ice cream
shop where you can get sweet treats.
The Louisville River Walk is a 7 mile, paved path that runs from Chickasaw
Park on the west end to the Eva Bandman Park on the east end of town. There are
many great stopping points along the way. At Chickasaw park, the farthest west
point of the trail, there are tennis and basketball courts and a sprinkler to cool off
after your ride. Along the way, you can visit the locks or cross the bridge to the
Falls of the Ohio Museum. Downtown, the Waterfront Park has a waterpark, and
at Eva Bandman Park, you can wade in the Ohio River.
Cherokee park is a good family biking trail. It has great places to have family
picnics; there are play areas for kids and lots of shady spots to rest. You might get
lucky and catch a soccer or lacrosse game on some of the fields as you ride by.
Beware of the long hills, though; they can challenge even great riders. On the way
home you can stop at one of the restaurants on Bardstown Rd for something to
eat.

STAND FOR 'MERICA?

You say stand for the pledge because its 'MERICA, and for all it has done for us

But do you realize what 'MERICA has done to my people

It tazed my unconscious uncle to death

It wrote a nasty blog about how he deserved to die the way he did

It called him an animal who needed slaying

It left the bloody oxygen mask on the ground

It stained the black couch he was murdered on

And YOU say stand for the pledge

It didnt give two cares about my grandfather when he fought in WWII

He couldnt get a bite to eat when he was hungry, but he fought for 'MERICA right?

It didnt care about his family or where they would end up, he was black as the night and
invisible

It told him to 'stay back and stay in yo' place boy', but didnt he stand for this 'MERICA?

And YOU say stand for the pledge because its 'MERICA

BUT HAS 'MERICA EVER STOOD FOR US?

Once spoken by Christopher Reeve returns to his daily hunting. He never had a thing for normal
grocery stores. Living off the land. As he always says. Bringing
back fresh elk, Nick walks past Rhiley as his bitter fingers drag across her scruff: she wags her tail with excitement,
knowing dinner awaits. As the night begins to settle, the morning slowly approaches.
Bark! Bark! Rhiley mimics the brave rooster that wakes the barn. Nick groans as the covers rush off the side of
the bed, as Rhiley races to the face of her master and welcomes him with a warm brush of saliva across his face. Nick
opens his unwanted eyes and laughs as his dog wakes him. Ka-Kaaaa!!!!! Nick yells, Rhiley wags her tail and sprints
off the bed. Usually a morning begins with an annoying alarm clock, but in this scenario its just the mans best friend,
and the man himself.
After the morning meal, Nick heads out to the dock, and begins to load the Alaskan Eagle sailboat; the Alaskan
sailboat is curved beautifully to withstand the ferocious winds. Not too far behind, Rhiley sits by the damp tree to observe,
watching every move Nick makes. The sailboat is soon ready to set sail, but there is something missing. Nick glances at
Rhiley, her ears stand straight up. Wondering where all the tension is coming from, she rises up from that damp tree and
approaches the dock. Come on Rhy, thats a good girl. Nick says cheerfully. She hesitates for a while not wanting to
move at all as she is in middle of the dock; she begins to sit and lays her head in front of her two paws. Nick sighs.
Approaching Rhiley, he sticks his hand out and she raises up as her nose pushes against his hand and they walk to the
sailboat. Dont be scared Rhy, its just water; ohh come here. Nick says as Rhiley jumps up to him and he helps her
onto the sailboat. Later that late evening, Nick decides its time to set sail.
Hours later, Nick stares back at the end of his sailboat, and his eyes go beyond the stern rail as he sees the black
water and nothing more. He feels harmonious. Nick enjoys sailing whenever he can; the Gulf of Alaska can be a peaceful
setting. He walks to the hull and sits down in his chair and kicks his legs back as if he is on a beach laying on a hammock.
Nick smiles as he reads Gib's Odyssey (A Tale of Faith and Hope on the Intracoastal Waterway.)
Later that peaceful night, Nick wakes up with his legs still stretched out and his book lying face down on his
stomach. He sighs deeply, wondering if Rhiley is okay. As often as he sails, Nick will never forget when Rhiley slid off
the boat and nearly drowned. As she slid off the side of the boat, both her leg and tail got tangled in a thick rope, and she
wasnt able to keep her head above the water and Nick didnt seem to notice until it was close to the end. Ever since then,
Rhileys trust for Nick on the open water has been weakened. Nick quietly makes his way to the lower compartments of
the sailboat, and there she is, laying on her mini bed, curled up in a tight ball as if she is a boa constricting her prey. He
glances at her, then makes his way to his man cave to gather shuteye until the next morning.
Several hours pass before Nicks sleep is shortened by continuous barks from Rhiley. He checks on her, and as
soon as her eyes lay on him, she races to him and pounces up on her two strong legs as she paws at his shirt. Arent you
energetic this morning? Her response is a single bark. He understands and gives her several treats. After Nick gets Rhiley
settled in for the rest of the day he heads up to the upper deck and navigates around the Kodiak Islands (west of the Gulf
of Alaska). He decides to take a new route. Seems like a simple task - navigate around the Kodiak Islands and make his
way back home. He doesnt know that there will a storm near the islands at the same time he is there. As he continues his
journey, he sails the boat a mile from the island and settles down in his chair to enjoy the view. Nick calls Rhiley as he
nervously approaches the upper deck and he glances at her. Come here Rhy! he says excitedly. He takes a treat from his
pocket and Rhiley falls for the trap as she sprints to him and kneels down under his chair as he pets her; he drops the treat
next to her as she chews on it. Once she realizes she is on the top deck of the boat, she spuriously remains calm and
appears to enjoy the view and the smell of the water.
As time progresses, Rhiley wonders off over by the side rail of the boat; Nick pays very close attention to every
move Rhiley makes. Her ears stand up; as her tail wages back and forth, she barks loudly towards the water. Nick almost
falls over, trying to get up out of his chair; he grabs on the table for balance, then finally makes it over to Rhiley. What is
it Rhy? Nick spots a woman in the water; she seems fatigued. Nick races over to the hull and stops his motors
completely, then makes his way to the stern and gets into the water. He swims to the woman; she reaches for him and
screams in pain.
What is it? He asks.
She can barely speak as she mumbles, My legMy leg.
They both struggle to stay up float, as they reach the side of the boat Nick grabs onto the ladder, climbing up
quickly as she follows behind him. She slips and almost falls but Nick snatches her hand and pulls her up. I got you!
Come on you can do it, he encourages as he pulls her up. She turns around and grabs the rail and she limps as she regains
her balance. Rhiley races to the cooler, and pushes her nose underneath the hatch. She reaches her head in the cooler and
bites down on a water bottle, then races up to the upper deck, dropping the water bottle at the poor womans feet. Nick
hesitates, then picks up the woman. She doesnt seem to mind even though her leg is injured. He carries her down to the
lower deck and lays her on the couch. Stay right there, please! Ill bring some towels for you.Oh! Jesus! Nick shouts
as Rhiley runs past his legs giving him a heart attack. Rhiley wanders over to the woman and sits next to the couch as the
woman stares nervously at the dog.
Nick rushes back with multiple towels, and the woman takes them, stuffing them under her leg. The woman says,
Im sorry really, Ive made a m-.
Nick interrupts the woman, I advise you to rest please; we will talk later. I will remain at bay, and I will take you
back to shore.
As tired as she is, she is not in position to argue, and she quickly says, Im grateful for your hospitality, thank
you for saving me, I will rest. The womans eyes close.
Meanwhile, Nick cleans up the upper deck washing off the blemishes of blood that stain the teak floor. As Nick
cleans, he loses track of time. Finally finished, he makes his way to the chair and lays back, throwing his feet on top of the
guardrail until he falls asleep.
Hours pass; the woman wakes up frantically. Rhiley sits there still breathing in the poor womans face. She
realizes where she is and wraps the towel around her leg, then gets up quickly. Making her way to the upper deck, she
sees the man who saved her. Oh! She stumbles as she grabs the guardrail and she tap his shoulder.
His eyes open slowly and he looks up at her. Hey? Im sorry, I wasnt supposed to sleep. I was cleaning and-.
She interrupts him, Its ok, I understand. She looks around then sits on a bin. Shyly, she and hesitates, then asks,
W-Whats your name?.
My name is Nicklaus, but I prefer Nick, yours?
She looks down and pulls her hair behind her ears, looking up at Nick, My name is Sarah Bradley.
Nick quickly asks, What are you doing out here in these waters? I mean, w-wheres your boat?
She laughs, I-Im a journalists looking for a good story, I was on a canoe.
Nick laughs, A canoe? Out here? I havent seen a canoe anywhere. He says sarcastically as he gets up out of his
chair and looks around.
She raises her eyebrow, Im guessing you have a good sense of humor, huh? You havent seen a canoe, because
there was a leak and my canoe started to submerge. I tried to get out before it sunk and I ended up damaging my leg. If it
wasnt for you, I dont know what would have happened.
Nick sits back down as he grabs her hand, and says, If what you say is true, then Ill help you, ok?
She sighs in relief, Thank you, I dont even know how to repay you, really.
Nick and Sarah continue to have multiple conversations throughout the day.
Nightfall settles in, and Nick walks to the upper deck and notices the change in cloud transformation. He approaches the
bow, and feels a strong, warm breeze rushing across his skin. He calls for Sarah, and when she is next to him, he points to
the clouds directly above. A storm is forming, he tells her.
She hesitates, Can you make it back to the shore in time?
Nick shakes his head and sighs, I wont risk it, and were going have to settle for the night. Im sorry.
She agrees with Nick.
They hear an aggressive howl that converts into a destructive gust of wind, rocking the boat on its port side. Nick
motions Sarah to go down to lower deck as he rushes to the bow and drops the anchor to keep the boat steady. It starts to
rain intensely and Nick sprints down to the lower deck to keep Sarah and Rhiley calm.
Everyone settles in the main room, and Nick sits on the couch with Rhiley. Sarah lays across the sofa, writing in
her journal. Nick is curious, and he asks, I hate to interrupt you, but what are you writing about?
Sarah raises her eyebrow and locks her eyes on his, About how a mysterious man and his best friend saved me.
Nick laughs, Well Im intrigued! It is the first time hes been at ease since he found her in the sea.
She chuckles and continues writing.
PAY UP
Chris Encarnacion

Im going to give you two options, Marcus! Either you work for me and earn all the money back that
your father owes me, or Ill take your sister with me and she has to prostitute herself to earn the money, said
the drug dealer with a very mean face.
Youre not giving me good options here! My father is already dead, what do I have anything to do with
the money and why do you still want it? You cant do this to me; I cant work for you; its just way too
dangerous. I cant risk my life that way. I also cant let my little sister prostitute herself to pay the money back
my father owes you, she has nothing to do with this and neither do I. Please dont do this to us, there has to be
other options.
I know you have seen me before. Years ago I always came over when your parents had cookouts; your
dad and I were really good friends. You used to play with my kids the whole time, while your father and I
would discuss details about him working for me to earn some extra cash. Your father and I had to stop hanging
out as much because we didnt want any of your family getting suspicious. All this time you thought your father
was a great hard working man, but in reality he was just a big lying drug dealer who worked for me. I gave your
father $10,000 worth of drugs to deliver to someone in Indiana, and after that I never heard of him again. I
never got my money and he avoided speaking to me; he hid, thinking I would never find him. Hes lucky hes
dead now, god knows what I would have done to him said the drug dealer.
You shut up! I dont need you speaking about my dead father like that. And yes, I remember you now;
I always wondered why you guys stopped coming over. Your son and I were really good friends. I remember he
would tell me how successful you were, sad part is, he didnt know how. He would look up to you and so would
I, but now I am disgusted by you. That still doesnt change the fact that how I have nothing to do with this. This
is your problem, not mine, so you fix it, said Marcus scornfully.
I am fixing it. I am fixing it by giving you those two options for you to choose from. I am going to get
my money one way or another. Marcus, I am giving you and your little sister two weeks to pick an option. I will
be back here in exactly two weeks; either come up with the $10,000 your father owes me, or pick one of those
options. Dont try hiding from me; I promise you will regret it. I have plenty of men who work for me; youd be
surprised at how many of them you probably know.
I grew up and lived in Nashville Tennessee my whole life. My younger sister and I live together. Our
parents died a year ago, so now we live on our own. Luckily I was old enough to take custody of her and be her
guardian. My parents both died together in a car crash on their way home from their anniversary dinner. My
sister and I were both at home waiting for them to get home to see how their dinner went. I can remember that
night like it was yesterday. We were watching a movie, and suddenly I received a call telling me my parents had
been in a terrible accident. We rushed to the scene, and all I could see was my mother covered up with a white
blanket. Right then and there, I already knew she was gone. My father was rushed to the hospital for immediate
care. After two hours at the hospital waiting, crying and worrying, we finally were able to see him. The doctors
told us our mother was killed instantly at the crash, but my father didnt have much longer to live either. I
looked my father in the eyes with my tears falling all over his face. He gasped for air and said, Im sorry son,
please forgive me if this puts you through any trouble. I cried, Dad what are you talking about? but he never
answered.
Id had trouble with money ever since the death of my parents. I owed a lot of money in college loans
already. When I found out about my father owing money to a drug dealer, it added even more stress on top of
the other. I didnt know what to do. I didnt want to tell my sister, because I didnt want her to be stressing
about this. I wanted to handle this on my own, but I needed help, so thats why I had to tell my sister one way or
another, plus it involved her. I would never want my little sister to prostitute herself. She was only 17 and I was
only 21; we didnt need to be handling stuff like this. We had nothing to do with this, but big dog wanted his
money. I had to find a way to come up with the money. I couldnt work for him; it was far too dangerous and I
could never let my sister prostitute herself to him or anyone. I couldnt sell my car because I needed it. I also
couldnt take out any loans, because I already owed too much. Our lives were in real danger and I had no
solutions to fix it.
After a lot of thinking, I decided the best option would be to move far away from Nashville. My family
in Minnesota had offered me the guest room in their home where my sister and I could live for now. I needed to
break the news to her, but I knew that she wasnt going to be happy with it at all; she loved it in Nashville.
Although wed been having a rough time financially, she still found ways to have a lot of fun with friends and
school.

Hey sis, I have to talk to you, its pretty important, I approached her quietly.
Yeah whats up? I could tell she thought I was going to tell her something exciting.
This sucks telling you this but, we have a huge problem. You remember dads old friend? The one that
always used to come over with his kids and we would play with?
Yes, why, she asked with a confused look.
Well he is a huge drug dealer, and before dad died, dad worked for him.
How do you know this? Her voice was angry.
He found me, well us. He came to our house the other day and told me everything. He also told me dad
owed him $10,000, and he needs that money. He has threatened us if we dont get him the money
Why are you just now telling me this?! He cant be serious. We have nothing to do with that money
how did we get involved in this?
Im not sure why he wants us. But he threatened us with two options, and we only have two weeks to
come up with something if we dont come up with the money. Actually, now we have less than two weeks
because he came to talk to me a couple days ago. Im sorry I didnt tell you I just didnt want you worrying too
much. I told her sadly.
Marcus, what are the two options? She grabbed my arm and shook it to make me tell her sooner.
The two options are either I work for him and pay all the money dad owed, or you prostitute yourself
for him and pay the money back. I refuse to do either, and our lives are in danger. Sister, I love you and this
city, but were moving to Minnesota with Uncle Tom. He has a room for us to stay in for now; its not safe
here.
She started crying and walked away. She refused to leave Nashville. She told me that she had nothing to
do with her fathers debts and she wasnt going to kiss up to anybody. I agreed with her to make her feel better,
but I knew deep down it would be a bad idea to stay here. We both knew we had to leave. We went two days
before the drug dealer was supposed to come back. Our uncle helped us move into his new home. My sister
finally calmed down and understood this was the best and safest thing to do. Weeks had passed before we were
settled and comfortable. I found a new job, and my sister made a lot of friends at her new school. We didnt
hear from the drug dealer, and soon we were much more relaxed and stress free until we started getting letters
in the mail with both of our names on them. All the letters had on them was a $. At first, we just ignored them
and threw them away.
A week later we got a knock on the door; I opened it and the drug dealer was standing right in front of my face.
My heart started pounding and I was scared out of my mind.
I told you no hiding buddy. I couldnt tell if he had a gun or maybe even a knife.
I slammed the door shut and grabbed my sister and ran through the back door to the car. The drug dealer
broke the front door down and started chasing us. We got to my car and sped off. The dealers companions
started chasing us in their car. My uncle wasnt home, so he couldnt do anything to help, but he was probably
on his way home from work at that time. The bad guys were right behind us and they were firing shots. The
shots were breaking through the back windshield of my car. There was a red light coming up in front of me, but
there was no way in hell I could stop; I had to take it. I ran the red light, praying the entire time I was crossing
the intersection. I made it safely through when I heard a loud crash. I looked back and saw the drug dealers car
smashed into another. I looked at the other car and noticed it seemed very familiar. My sister screamed out and
said, Thats uncle Toms car!!!..
Amber Alert
Tamia Smith

Amber Alert, 3 year old Harmony Smith has been missing for 3 days now. She was last
seen at Bundles of Joy daycare center. I turned the television off and looked at Harmony sitting
beside me. Within these three days she had grown so close to me. We had been in the house
every day. I couldnt risk any chances of her being seen.
Im hungry, said Harmony pouting.

I walked to the kitchen and I tried to reach for the cereal, but I was still sore from the
punches my husband gave me yesterday. I should be used to this by now. My husband many
reasons to hurt me, both verbally and physically. Maybe my father hit me for the same reasons.
Im starting to think its my fault that I get abused.
Come out here girl! My father screamed viciously at me. I crawled under my bed for
protection, but nothing could protect me from my monster of a father. He dragged me from under
the bed and swung his hand back as he got ready to hit me

I think Im shaking from the shock of the flashback, but its really Harmony shaking my
leg. I snap back to reality. I grab a step stool and grab the cereal off of the shelf.
The clock ticking in the background reminds me of how little time I have until he comes
home again. I look at the clock. Thirty minutes until my poor example of a husband gets home
from work. Seeing him is the part of each day that I dread.
Harmony eats her cereal and quickly falls asleep on the couch. My mind starts to
reminisce about my husband and our past, and after a while, I fall asleep, too, dreaming of how it
all first started. It was more of a nightmare than a dream, actually.
The doctor said I cant have children, I tell my husband as tears start rolling down
my checks. I look at my husband, wanting sympathy and for him to tell me that everything will be
okay, but instead he pushes me off of him and I fall to the floor screaming in agony, saying Im
sorry, continuously. He hits me in the jaw and tells me to shut up before he hits me again.
That was where it all started.
I wake up startled from hearing the door slam. My husband walks in and immediately
starts screaming. Wheres my dinner? Every day I come home to nothing. Youre worthless.
His words no longer hurt me; its when he puts his hands on me that causes all of the
pain. I try to block out everything he says as he continues to talk about how worthless I am.
You cant even give me a child, he says. After hearing that, I want to black out.
I took her for you! I scream while pointing at Harmony who is now in the corner
crying.
I cant give birth to a child, and we dont have the money to adopt, so I kidnapped her
hoping she would give you a reason to stop beating on me. What do you expect from me?
Thats not my child and she never will be! he says as he knocks down everything in
sight, thrashing and flinging things everywhere. I cover up Harmony in the corner and watch the
madness. He finally stops and leaves the house.
I look at Harmony. Ive got to get us out of here. Ive spent the whole night
thinking of what to do. I shouldve never put her in this situation.
I drive slowly on my way to the grocery store. Its a nice day outside, which is why I
decided to get out of my upsetting home. As I am driving, I see kids playing outside of a daycare.
If I could have children, my relationship with my husband would be so much better. I
stare at this one little girl who catches my eye. She has long beautiful, bouncy, blonde hair. I
watch her play with her friends, laughing and smiling. After a while, I notice I had been
watching her for an hour. I see her caretaker go inside the daycare while the other children
follow. Everyone except the little girl. Without thinking, I sprint from my car and grab the little
girl, then dash back to my car. I hit the gas and speed away. What have I just done?
I have had plenty of chances to get away from my husband, but instead I stayed. He
would sweet talk me and convince me to stay with him. I was blind to all of the signs and things
going on around me. I thought that maybe things could change and that he was just stressed out.
Hes beating on me, I tell my best friend.
Leave him. You have no reason to stay. I know you love him, but he doesnt love you; if
he did, he would never have put his hands on you or do anything to hurt you, she tells me.
Its not that easy. I have a lot to think about.
After a week of pondering if I should leave or not, I finally get the guts to approach him.
Ive made my mind up to leave. He is drunk as he walks through the door.
Its over. You have issues that I cant help you fix. Youre hurting me because youre
hurt, I said.
I have all my bags packed and my cab driver is waiting for me in his car outside the
house. My husband looks at me with his drunken eyes and gives me a miserable face.
Dont leave me! he cries.
I promise it will never happen again. I will never hurt you again. I need you.
I stayed because a part of me wouldnt know what to do without him, and a part of me
still had hope that he could change. That was five years ago, and hes still been beating on me
ever since. I gave up on leaving because he wouldnt let me, but now that another life is
involved, I HAVE TO.
I get ready to tell him. I clean up the house. I cook. I clean myself up as best as I can. I
make sure to keep my scars obvious though, to remind him of what he has done to me over the
years. Five hours pass before he comes home.
Im leaving. Its whats best for the both of us, I say pointing at Harmony and myself.
You arent going anywhere. Either you see my face every day, or see a jail cell for the
rest of your life for kidnapping this little girl.
Im shocked that he that he would do this to me, but I make my decision fast. I would
rather suffer in jail alone knowing that Harmony is away from him, instead of us both being
beaten on for the rest of our lives.
He calls the police and they immediately show up. Im handcuffed. I show my bruises to
them and tell them my motive of kidnapping Harmony.
We both get locked up.
Soon Ill be out of jail. Because of my situation, the judge is allowing me to get out in a
month. I hear Harmony is back with her family now. I am sad because I miss her, but I am also
glad because she is safe.
Most importantly, IM SAFE. Away from that guy I once called a husband. He is now
locked up for life.
The good people always prosper in the end.

Why did they get seated in my section? I quietly mumbled to myself as I approached the table. Hello, my

Finally, I am off! I thought to myself, I can finally get home to my daughter Miracle. I remember giving birth to

William! Get up! I said shaking him
What Legacy? Damn! he barked sitting up in bed wiping his hand across his face.

How the heck is that even possible its not even nine months yet!
I dont know, but we need to get to the hospital; Im in pain and I need to find out whats going on! I
screamed at him.
What did you just say? How you think Im taking you to the hospital when its my baby? You want me
to go to jail? Get yourself in the bathroom! Were about to deliver this baby right now! I wanted to protest
but I knew it wouldnt work in my favor. Thinking to myself, Not only does he rape me, but he doesnt know
how to keep his hands to himself. You would think my mom would see the bruises and ask questions, but she
ignored them. On the night of February 2nd 1999, I lay on the bathroom floor of my moms inherited two
bathroom, three bedroom house and pushed a two pound baby out of my young adolescent body at fourteen
years old. William sat and played doctor. When I pushed the last time, he was able to hold the baby in the
palm of his hand. I didnt know whether to be happy or not; I was more scared than anything. What are we
going to do? I asked as I lay my head on the shower wall, drained and still in excruciating pain.
Your mom will be home in about five minutes; Im about to wrap the baby up and sit it on the porch.
When your mom gets here, were going act surprised, so you better play along. Your mother is a nurse; she
will see an unhealthy baby and want to help. I know my women! And I know if this baby lives, youre going to
take care of it! He yelled as he yanked me off of the bathroom floor.
Alright William! Get off of me!
Legacy, this conversation is never to leave this room. If anybody was to find out I know, it would be
because of you because I am not stupid enough to incriminate myself. I have no problem killing you or hurting
this child, if she looks anything like you when she grows up, she might be just as lucky. He said with a smirk
on his face. I knew whether I wanted this child or not, this was my baby; I knew she was a product of rape, but
I didnt know her fate and that frightened me. I dont know why he made me keep her, but I made the
decision that night to protect her with my life. I will protect her like my mom never did.
Momma, can I talk to you for a minute? I have something to tell you. I wanted to tell her everything,
every piece of it, but she clearly had other plans.
Legacy, you will have to wait; William and I are about to go to dinner and a movie, we can talk
tomorrow. Dont wait up, watch those dishes, and make sure your little sister doesnt make a mess of those
clothes, I dont know how she does it when she cant move. She said, looking at Miracle with a look of
confusion on her face.
Ma I need to talk to you now! I semi-yelled.
Legacy, every time William and I want to go out, you try to stir up some trouble, leave us alone! she
screamed at me. William gave me a glare, starring a hole in the side of my face. I retreated back to my room
with Legacy on my hip as I let a river of tears flow out of my eyes. This is the third time Ive tried to speak to
her and shes always doing this to me. She says we will talk to tomorrow and tomorrow never comes; shes
always too busy. As this point I know where I stand in her life and I hate it.
When I reached my destination of home, I was so excited I almost broke the door down trying to get in:
my mom and William were gone like always, which I dont have a problem with anymore. I dont have to be
reminded every two seconds that my mom cares more about her boyfriend than her own child and how
Williams face makes me sick. Miracle and Ms. Brandy were in the living room looking beautiful as ever. Ms.
Brandy was feeding Miracle carrots and she was just spitting them out and smiling. As soon as she smelled me,
her smile was ear to ear. She couldnt see me or speak, but she could hear me Hey beautiful girl, you miss
mommy? I knew she couldnt answer me, but that smile of hers were the answer me but that smile of hers
were the answers to all my questions. Its hard to have a daughter with cerebral palsy, and even harder when
you are broke, but we manage. Miracle and Ms. Brandy are the biggest blessing in life, but finding Ms. Brandy
was hell.
I had been calling everywhere for the past two weeks. Every home health care office was either too
expensive, or didnt want to take care of a blind, mute cerebral palsy child. I mean, it is kind of a burden.
I will not give up, so I made my final call. Hello, my name is Legacy Pate. Is this Sun Creek home
healthcare?
Yes, maam, how may I help you?
I am looking for a nurse that can take care of my child while I am at work.
Well sure maam, how often do you need the nurse? How old is your daughter? And, what is her
condition?
I need her eight to twelve hours a day, Monday through Friday and it would be a blessing if they
could be on call on the weekends. I said excitedly.
And your daughter?
Uhm my daughter, she has cerebral palsy, shes blind, and shes mute. I said hesitantly as I trailed off
as if I knew I was going to be rejected after I told him my babys condition.
Well maam, we have someone for you, her name is Brandy; she is very professional, shes
experienced and she will work with you. My heart filled with joy, I had never been so relieved in my life.
Brandy will call you back with her prices and you all can work something out.
Thank you so much. I jumped for joy. Ms. Brandy called back immediately, she was at work the very
next day. She has been taking care of Miracle for five years now.
I cant forget my momma! Hey Ms. Brandy, how are doing? I said jokingly also giving her a hug in the
process. Even though she didnt give birth to me, she did more for me than my own mom.
Hey Leggy, Im great like always, tired though. Shes been wearing me out. Did you eat? I made some
roast. She said out of breath and she didnt move at all that made me laugh.
You made roast? You love me dont you? I said with a serious but funny tone. I swear she always
knew when I was hungry and what to cook. I thought this would be the perfect time to ask her to watch
Miracle on Saturday because I picked up some extra shifts Ms. Brandy?
Yes, leggy?
Uhm, do you think you can watch Miracle on Saturday for me? Pleasseeeee.
Of course, what time?
10am till 12am.
Baby, I cant do that, I can do 10am till 6pm, but you know I got church in the morning and God does
not like me out that late, unless you want me to take her home with me?
Nahh, just stay until 6 and Ill ask my mom to watch her. God knows I dont want to, but I am grateful
that I even got her to watch her for that long.
Thank you Ms. Brandy. I told her as she stood up to leave.
Stop it, you know I would do anything for you, I just wish I could watch her longer, If you want her to
go home with me its always an option Leggy.
I smiled at how amazing she is. Its okay Moms, I got it okay? I love you.
Okay, I love you too, Goodnight. She did a light jog to her car door and was out of breath before she
reached the car, she stopped in the middle of the street to breath.
You okay? I was laughing so hard I about cried
Yea baby, Im just resting.
Saturday was approaching very fast and I took my chance to ask my mother before she got too busy
with William again.
Ma? Uhm can you watch Miracle, on Saturday? Just for a couple of hours; I picked up another shift
and I cant leave Legacy here, Ms. Brandy is watching her from 10 am till 6pm, so I only need you till 12, thats
when I get off.
I mean why wouldnt I have a problem watching my daughter? she said sarcastically.
That cut deep, considering shes my daughter and I spend money for Ms. Brandy every month and I
take care of Miracle, clothe her and do everything for her when youre not even home to start off with, but
instead I said, You wouldnt. I was just asking to make sure you would be home, thats all.
Well yea Ill be home, William wont be in, so yea. I guess. She said nonchalantly now staring at her
magazine, almost like she was silently dismissing me. I started to retreat back to my room where I left Miracle
laying in her crib but I did a double take and turned around
Thank you, mama. I said genuinely after everything my mom never did for me. Even though she
failed to protect me, I know shes going to try with Miracle and I can at least give her credit for that.
Yes sir, you said you want 1 T-bone 12 ounce sirloin, mashed potatoes with gravy, macaroni and a
large sprite. I said for clarity.
Yes and add a slice of apple pie please.
Got you. Is that all sir? He nodded his head, it was five in the evening and I hadnt heard from Ms.
Brandy all day. After I put my order in, I went to the breakroom to just call and make sure everything was
okay. Hey Ms. Brandy is everything okay? I asked.
Yes, everything is fine, we just came back from the park. She cant even keep her head up shes so
tired, she smelled ice cream, she wanted ice cream, she smelled funnel cake, she wanted funnel cake and she
ate it all, she was a beast. You couldnt wipe the smile off her face today.
My heart smiled, I was finally okay Thank you, I dont know why but I was worried all day, but can give
her a bath since yall been out? And, give my mom the run down before you leave out and text me when you
are about to leave, please?
I shouldve texted you before we left or at least kept you updated; I know how you are. I will give her
a bath and I will talk to her before I leave, and I left some food for you in the oven.
Alright, thank you again, Momma. I love you and give Miracle a kiss for me.
I love you too, and I will, bye Leggy.
Bye Ms. Brandy.
I went on with my shift with my heart at ease. After an hour or two, Ms. Brandy called me and told me
she was leaving, that she gave Miracle a bath, changed her clothes, put her to sleep and laid her in her crib.
She reassured me there was no way my mom could mess this up, Miracle, was sleep and she took her
medicine so there was no chance of her waking up.
Everything is going to be fine. I had to keep telling myself that.
Loretta can you take that last table for me, I havent had my break? I started, but my feet are
begging.
Sorry boo, I got enough tables to serve to last me years.
Alright thanks. I let out a sigh of frustration, I am ready to go. I mumbled to myself. My attitude
made a turn for the worse; I kept my head down as I took the customers order Hey, my name is Legacy, I will
be your waitress for tonight, may I start you off with a drink?
What would you recommend beautiful? he said basically trying to look through the notepad I was
writing his order on.
Can I help you? I said with agitation.
Yea, I asked you what you recommended beautiful? You know to drink. He said with a smile on his
face. I dont know why hes smiling.
I recommend a frozen strawberry daiquiri, or our frozen strawberry lemonade, but if youre on a
budget, I suggest a sprite. I said with smirk on my face, now I was laughing.
Surprise me? Alright Mr I didnt get your name.
Last names Green, but you beautiful, can call me anytime.
Alright Anytime, Ill be back with your surprise and to take your order in a moment. I sat down the
Sprite on the table once I got back; I was going to get him a water but I am not that petty.
You ready to order, Mr. Anytime?
Yes, I would like seasoned pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. Maybe hes not on a budget, I
thought to myself.
You want to join me? He asked.
Im on the clock right now.
Its empty Legacy, there are eight people in here; you can sit down for a second, I know your feet
hurt. My feet do hurt, I thought to myself.
Alright, just for a second, then Ill go put your order in. I sat down and relief immediately came to my
feet. My night was made when I looked up from my notepad; now I had his first name, Carter. The diner
cleared out. It was 12 am, and my shift was over.
You want me to take you home? Carter asked.
I was very hesitant, but it was raining. I knew the buses werent running anymore, and the walk was
about 2 miles. Too far. So I said, Yes. I finally made it home and I got the digits, its probably not going to be
anything serious. Ive never talked to a boy, so we will just see what happens.
I used my key to creep in the house; it was so quiet, and I loved it. I laid out on the couch, about to be
dead to the world with the sleep I was about to catch; then it hit me, Why is it so quiet? I looked around the
house, and my so called mother was nowhere to be found. So selfish, I thought to myself. I was pissed,
needless to say. On my way up the stairs, red flag one. Why is my babys door open? She always closes it.
Maybe she forgot, I tried to reason with myself. Calm down Legacy. As I entered the room that Miracle and
I shared, I crept over to her crib and other than noticing how beautiful she was, I also noticed her nightie was
on backwards. Now I know Ms. Brandy, and I also know that she does her job very well, so why is this nightie
on backwards? Questions flooded my mind as I called Ms. Brandy
Ms. Brandy, hey, is there any way you couldve put Miracles nightie on backwards?
No darling, there is no way. I have doing this too long to make rookie mistakes like that.
Okay, well I was just asking. Thank you.
Your welcome leggy. Goodnight.
Wait! Was William here when you left?
Yes, I heard him and that god awful mom of yours trying to switch places for the night. William
Accepted, I think, but I dont know if he stayed or not.
Goodnight Ma. I love you.
I love you too. At that same exact moment, I heard a toilet flush. I jolted down to the kitchen to grab
a knife, and in walked in my mother through the front door as if she wasnt supposed to be watching Miracle.
I saw William come down the stairs all nonchalantly. I charged him, slicing everything I saw: his face,
his hands, his arms, everything. I didnt miss a beat.
YOU RAPED YOUR OWN DAUGHTER! I just kept cutting; my mom tried to intervene and I sliced her
too.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING, LEGACY?! GET OFF OF HIM! My mom yelled. Blood stained our once
beautiful white carpet.
HE RAPED MY BABY! JUST LIKE HE DID ME!
LEGACY STOP LYING! WHY WOULD HE RAPE HIS OWN DAUGHTER? she screamed.
YOU KNEW! I went upstairs and grabbed Miracle. As I came down stairs, my mother was tending to
Williams wombs. I grabbed her keys and rushed out of the house as I frantically drove to the hospital.
Mommas got you, Miracle.
