Adult, Children’s & Gift

Someone recently asked me, “ Who are the heroes in the Chronicle Books story?”
Of course, I immediately point to the many talented authors, artists, and designers
who have contributed to our success over the years. I am also proud of our exception-
ally gifted and dedicated team who ensure everything we create, market, and sell is
distinctly Chronicle in its look and feel. But without the many inventive and loyal
retailers with whom we work, Chronicle Books would not be what it is today, fifty
years since our start. The support we have received from you, our customers, is as
resolute and passionate as ever, a tremendous asset for which we are truly grateful.

As we celebrate fifty years of publishing, I’m in awe of how far we’ve come since our
inception back in the heady days of San Francisco’s Summer of Love when we made
a commitment to see things differently. We’ve published more than 7000 titles, in-
cluding myriad gift formats, and received numerous awards and accolades. We have
transformed from a regional press into a leading international publisher of illustrated
adult and children’s books and a pioneer of groundbreaking gift formats. We’ve chal-
lenged ourselves to sell our books around the globe, in bookstores, museum shops, and
gift stores large and small, from specialty stores to farm stands, wineries, toy stores,
and even car washes. We love when people tell us they see our books everywhere.

As we look ahead to the future, we will continue to build upon our many achievements
of these past fifty years. Thank you for your partnership and your love of what we do
here at Chronicle Books. We are passionate about what we do—and we look forward
to another fifty years of bringing you the beauty, surprise, and delight that
is Chronicle Books.

200 Women
Who Will Change the Way You See the World
Edited by Ruth Hobday, Geoff Blackwell, Sharon Gelman & Marianne Lassandro • Photographs by Kieran Scott

Two hundred women from a variety of backgrounds are asked the same five questions. Their answers are inspiring human stories of
success and courage, love and pain, redemption and generosity. From well-known activists, artists, and innovators to everyday
women whose lives are no less exceptional for that, each woman shares her unique replies to questions like “What really matters to
you?” and “What would you change in the world if you could?” Interviewees include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,
actor and human rights activist Alfre Woodard, and Nobel Peace laureate Rigoberta Menchu, along with those who are making a
difference behind the scenes around the world, such as Marion Wright Edelman, head of the Children’s Defense Fund. Each inter-
view is accompanied by a photographic portrait, resulting in a volume that is compelling in word and image—and global in its scope
and resonance. This landmark book is published to coincide with an immersive traveling exhibition and an interactive website, build-
ing on this remarkable, ever-evolving project. With responses ranging from uplifting to heartbreaking, these women offer gifts of
empowerment and strength—inviting us to bring positive change at a time when so many are fighting for basic freedom and equality.

Ruth Hobday and Geoff Blackwell are the creative team behind such bestselling projects as Nelson Mandela’s Conversations with Myself.
Worldwide travelers, they are based in New Zealand.
Sharon Gelman is an award-winning human rights activist, writer, and media producer, who lives in Washington, D.C.
Marianne Lassandro, based in France, has edited bestselling photography books, including works by Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.
Kieran Scott is a photographer whose work has appeared in magazines, books, and campaigns. He is based in New Zealand.

I Fought the Law
Photographs by Olivia Locher of the Strangest Laws
from Each of the 50 States • Photographs by Olivia Locher
Foreword by Kenneth Goldsmith • Interview by Eric Shiner

Strange, outdated laws from each of the 50 U.S. states—
some overturned, some still on the books, and some merely
the stuff of legends—are depicted with sly wit by Olivia
Locher. Incisive, ironic, and gorgeous, these images will
appeal to art buffs and trivia fans alike. A foreword from
American poet Kenneth Goldsmith and an interview with
the artist by Eric Shiner, former director of the Andy Warhol
Museum, contextualize rising-star Locher’s photography.
From serving wine in teacups in Kansas to licking a toad in
Kentucky or perming a child’s hair in Nebraska, breaking
the law has never looked so good.

Nothing Rhymes with Orange
By Adam Rex

We all know nothing rhymes with orange. But how does
that make Orange feel? Well, left out! When a parade of fruit
gets together to sing a song about how wonderful they
are—and the song happens to rhyme—Orange can’t help
but feel like it’s impossible for him to ever fit in. But when
one particularly intuitive Apple notices how Orange is feel-
ing, the entire English language begins to become a bit
more inclusive. Beloved author-illustrator Adam Rex has
created a hilarious yet poignant parable about feeling left
out, celebrating difference, and the irrefutable fact that
nothing rhymes with orange.

Adam Rex is the author and illustrator of many beloved picture
books and novels, including the New York Times bestseller
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich, and has worked with the likes of
Jon Scieszka, Mac Barnett, and Jeff Kinney. He lives in Tucson,

It starts with a line. Whether made by the tip of a pencil
or the blade of a skate, the magic starts there.
And magic once again flows from the pencil and imagina-
tion of internationally acclaimed artist Suzy Lee. With the
lightest of touches, this masterwork blurs the lines between
real and imagined, reminding us why Lee’s books have
been lauded around the world, recognized on New York
Times Best Illustrated Books lists and nominated for the
Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international
honor given to children’s book creators. This seemingly
simple story about a young skater on a frozen pond will
charm the youngest of readers while simultaneously
astounding book enthusiasts of any age.

Suzy Lee lives in Seoul, South Korea, and is the author of award-

From award-winning author Dave Eggers comes one of the
most important children’s books of the year.

“Every time every we see the Statue of Liberty in
pictures, or any time we imagine the Statue of
Liberty, we see her standing still. Very still. Like,
well, a statue.

But she is moving. She weighs 450,000
pounds, and she is moving. How can we all
have missed this? Or even if we saw this, and
noticed this, how is it that we have seen and
noticed a 450,000-pound human on her way
somewhere and said, Pshaw. Just another 150-
foot woman walking off a 150-foot pedestal?”
—from Her Right Foot

Her Right Foot
By Dave Eggers • Illustrated by Shawn Harris

The Statue of Liberty was conceived many years ago in
the late 1800s, but its meaning—of unity, of welcome,

Thinking with Her Hands • By Susan Goldman Rubin

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is one
of the most famous pieces of civic architecture in the world.
But most people are not as familiar with the reserved college
student who entered and won the design competition to
build it. This accessible biography tells the story of Maya Lin,
from her struggle to stick with her vision of the memorial to
the wide variety of works she has created since then. The
carefully researched text, paired with ample photos, crosses
multiple interests—American history, civic activism, art his-
tory, and cultural diversity—and offers a timely celebration
of the memorial’s 35th anniversary as well as providing an
important contribution to the current discussion of the role
of women and minorities in society.

Susan Goldman Rubin has written art books for children of all ages,
including middle grade biographies of Georgia O’Keeffe and the
Wyeths. She lives in Malibu, California.

The Magnificent Musical Life of Elizabeth Cotten
By Laura Veirs • Illustrated by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh

Elizabeth Cotten was only a little girl when she picked up a
guitar for the first time. It wasn’t hers (it was her big brother’s),
and it wasn’t strung right for her (she was left-handed). But
she flipped that guitar upside down and backwards and
taught herself how to play it anyway. By age eleven, she’d
written “Freight Train,” one of the most famous folk songs
of the twentieth century. And by the end of her life, people
everywhere—from the sunny beaches of California to the
rolling hills of England—knew her music. This lyrical, loving
picture book from popular singer-songwriter Laura Veirs

Draw Bridge
A Draw-Your-Own Adventure • Illustrated by Sarah Walsh

To move from one side of the page to another, simply draw
a bridge. Draw a bridge of wooden planks, or perhaps an
impressive suspension bridge. Or a slide. Or a clothesline.
Or a flying horse. As the world sprawls ever forward through
the book, users’ imaginations create the connections across
an ever-expanding, ever-more-unusual landscape. Word-
less pages filled with beautiful, odd landscapes give users
backgrounds to draw the bridges of their wildest imagina-
tion. This inventive take on a coloring book functions like
an analog video game, different for every user, engaging for
every mind.

Sarah Walsh has worked as an in-house designer and illustrator
at Hallmark Cards before leaving to focus on full-time illustration.
She’s worked on coloring books for all ages, children’s board books,

How to Swear Around the World features dozens of favorite curses,
insults, and sayings from all over the globe. Get rid of a pesky hanger-on

in Brazil by telling him to dig for potatoes—vai ceifar batatas. To express
disgust toward your brown-nosing German friend, accuse him of being
a bicycle-rider—radfahrer, or tell someone off in Laos by letting him know
you think his mother enjoys keeping intimate company with dogs—Ma
see mea mung! Make new friends and enemies abroad with this handy
guide filled with fighting words, scatological expressions, dozens of ways
to insult someone’s mother, and many other suitably offensive phrases.

Jason Sacher is a writer and illustrator living in the wilds of southern Maine. He
has long been an admirer of curse words and their many uses, although he is troubled
by the increasing frequency with which those words are vehemently hurled at him
by friends, acquaintances, and members of his household. He figures he must just
have one of those faces. You can read Jason’s comics at
