Summer is usually thought of as a slower time of year, but we’ve found it brings busy times at Heart Choices. Beginning early in June (and before) preparations began for the Fireworks Stand. This was our 7th year and proved to be the best ever with sales nearly doubled from last year. We are so grateful to every volunteer who helped and every person who chose to support our tent with their fireworks purchases. With little time to rest between, we began recruiting workers for the Lemonade Stand at the Mitchell County Fair (July 28-31), and before that has even taken place, details are being finalized for the 2010 Walk-Run 4 Life on September 26. Whew! Makes me tired just writing it. Fundraising is a part of our ministry, and likely will always be. The simple truth is that if we want to strengthen Ben Fugate uses his “Ironman” our outreach, finding funding is a part of that process. strength to pound stakes for setting
up the fireworks tent.

Alice Thompson ~ Director Lila Sherlock ~ Receptionist Dorothy Katsiyiannis~ Mentor

It is exciting to see how God has already strengthened the outreach of Heart Choices, allowing us to serve women and men in Beloit as well as other communities. I am happy to say Heart Choices is now seeing clients by appointment in Concordia. We have been blessed to partner with agencies there and in other towns who see the importance of pregnancy counseling and education from a life-affirming perspective. Appointments for Concordia are made by calling the Beloit office. Although these opportunities sometimes stretch our staffing, we know that making services available on a more local basis is meeting needs for more young mothers and their families. Once again, the need for additional funding and personnel increases, but God has always been faithful to provide our needs through people just like you. We are blessed to have development directors and board members who are committed to doing what is necessary to assure women, families, and teens in the North Central Kansas area are given every possible opportunity to make healthy life choices related to their sexuality and childbearing, consistent with the sanctity of human life. At our annual board meeting in April, we said goodbye to two founding board members. Max Deets served as the first president of the board of directors of Heartbeat Pregnancy Center, Inc. His leadership and spiritual sensitivity were invaluable to the foundation of this ministry. Mary Fugate will continue to direct the Sexual Integrity program as she has done excellently for the past 8 years. Through school presentations, overnight retreats, and now a new training for parents, young people are equipped, encouraged, and challenged toward a life of purity and good health. Whether you can give, volunteer, or pray, your participation in this ministry is needed! The future of our young people and our families depends on it. Please join us and be a part of the team that’s making a difference in hearts and lives in your community!

The “Fun in the Sun” picnic on July 14, was originally scheduled to meet at Chautauqua Park, but the sweltering heat moved us to have an indoor picnic at Heart Choices. Parents and children enjoyed a lunch, along with activities, games, and gifts for each child. Parents had an opportunity to hear our parenting class volunteer, Donise Underhill, talk about sunscreen and insect repellent safety.

Pure Excitement
Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th 5:00pm-9:00am
PURE EXCITEMENT is an event that has an aggressive approach to helping teen guys understand the effects of lust and sexual compulsions. Using the book, “Who Moved the Goalpost?” by Bob Gresh, the event’s primary purpose is to give young men practical tools to live a life of purity and help them realize there is hope. It will revolutionize your view of sexual integrity while doing crazy stuff like playing Maul Ball and busting up a windshield!! Our next PURE EXCITEMENT event for boys in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th. It will be at Waconda Lake near the Hopewell church starting on Saturday evening at 5:00 and will be done by 9:00 Sunday morning.

Sexual Integrity Training
Saturday, October 2nd 9:00am-2:00pm
Sexual Integrity Training is for those of you who are interested in possibly making the Seven Myths of Sexuality presentation in area schools. It is a 3 day presentation designed for public schools. The training is also for those of you who would like to help with Pure Freedom or Pure Excitement events as the information from the Seven Myths is good basic information that would be helpful for you to know when working in our sexual integrity programs. The next Sexual Integrity training is October 2nd. We will start at 9:00 in the morning with a lunch break from 11:30 -12:30 and will finish by 2:00. At this training we cover the expectations of a sexual integrity volunteer, the center's policies on handling the various sexual topics and we will walk through the Seven Myths presentation. There is no cost for this training.

Building Family Connections
Wednesdays, October 27th, November 3rd, November 10th and November 17th 6:00pm-8:30pm
This sexual health curriculum is for parenting adults but would also be helpful to any adult who works with youth. Any interested adult is welcome to attend this class. In this course you will learn how to communicate and connect with your teen, sexual health information and how to promote abstinence. We will meet on 4 Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:30 on October 27, November 3rd, November 10th and November 17th with a different topic discussed each evening. This event will be held at the First National Bank community room at 101 E Main in Beloit.

Pure Freedom

PURE FREEDOM: Seven Secrets to Sexual Purity is an overnight event that is interactive and fun. It’s about giving girls usable tools to protect herself. Our next PURE FREEDOM event for girls in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, October 29th and 30th.
