Introduction [a]
Love of ones land or country is a natural thing.
By their nature, humankind and many other creatures
prefer to live in their birthplace/base, place of
residence, or place of struggling for livelihood.
This is because of the affinity that people develop
overtime for their land as much as they love their
family, relations and associates.
It is said:

Introduction [b]
It is this kind of affinity that made Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh) to be shocked when Waraqah ibn
Naufal informed him about the challenge that was
ahead of his mission as the Messenger of Allah:
:
[Bukhari] : !
Imam Az-Zahabiy confirmed this about the Prophet
(pbuh):

]Introduction [c
Only when it is no longer conducive to live in ones
birthplace due to either persecution or higher objectives
that one leaves, as it happened to Prophets Ibrahim and
Luut, Musa, Yaaqub and his family, and Muhammad
(peace be upon them) and the Companions (may Allah
)be pleased with them

Introduction [e]
This is why persecution of people from their country or
making living in their homeland unconducive for them
are considered legitimate reasons for self defence

What is Patriotism?
Patriotism is described as the emotional attachment to
a nation which individuals recognises as their
homeland.
It involves love of one's country, loyalty and
devotion to it, desire to grow and prosper collectively
or as a community.
It arises when people come together due to love of a
country regardless of their differences to form a unity
in order to defend their country from internal or
external aggression, positively project its image and
work together to develop it.

Islam and Patriotism
The Prophet (pbuh) used to openly declare his love for
Makkah, his birthplace

[Tirmidhi]
After changing his base to Madeenah, he made duaa
for Allah to make him love Madeenah, his land of
migration as much as he love Makkah or even more:
[Bukhari and Muslim]

He practically demonstrated his love for Madeenah:

What is NOT Patriotism
Al-Asabiyyah ():

[Muslim]

Blind support of ones country at all costs with no
consideration whatsoever of right or wrong:
: - - : :
":

[Ahmad & Ibn Maajah]
Basing ones feelings of loyalty, and loving and hating
on the basis of patriotism instead of Islam and piety.
Not speaking against injustice.
29/03/2016 Dr. A. B. Dogarawa - ABU, Zaria 12
What is NOT Patriotism
Disparaging or neglecting Muslims of other nationality
and considering non-Muslim fellow countrymen as
