MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

Name: John Quinn

PART A: Students create their own original movie using Windows Live Movie Maker to show
understanding and application of the Pythagorean Theorem and the properties of right triangles. The movie
should be from one or three minutes in length and include images and at least one imbedded video. The
video should include an explanation of how to apply the theorem and an explanation of why their
application works. Students will then post their video onto the classroom blog so that it can be used for
class review and shared with parents and others interested in geometry.
Grade Level: 9th
Content Area: Mathematics - Geometry
Technology Used (check all that apply): Movie Audio Podcast Vodcast Other: (list)
Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: MGSE9-12.G.SRT.8 Use trigonometric ratios and
the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.

Brief Description of Learning Experience:

The teacher will use a sample video created specifically for the lesson to introduce the topic. The teacher
will introduce Live Movie Maker and provide instruction on how to use it in creating their student films.
Students should collect images, videos, and information while learning about and applying appropriate
behavior regarding copyright laws. When the project is finished, the students will present the video to their
classmates and post it to the classroom blog.

The video should be between one and three minutes long and include around 25 images and at least one
imbedded video. Students are allowed to work in pairs if they prefer, or by themselves. The project should
take two weeks: one week for the collection of images, information, and video footage; and one week for
creation and editing stage. Students should keep their audience in mind: their peers, and create and edit
accordingly. The teacher will provide feedback to the students assessing the soundness of their
mathematical reasoning and quality of their video

Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking:

The students would be engaging in higher-order thinking skills and in the creation and development of an
education-oriented film through the use of technology. Because the students are creating collaboratively,
this would be LoTi level 4.
Importance of technology:
The students would not be able to do the project without multimedia authoring tools. The tools are critical
to student success in this assignment. Creating a movie in this manner forces students to be creative and
produce original work through the use of Live Movie Maker and can encourage collaborative learning.
Without this technology students could create poster or other visuals but the LoTi level would drop as the
audience would not go beyond the classroom.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
9th-grade students are generally 14 or 15 years old, and as such, I would need to obtain parental permission
before I could use their image, voice, or work in a published format. This would require signed
documentation. To further protect the student, because the name of the school and its location would make
identifying the student easier, it would be important to contain any material to a private blog. In preparation
for any consideration of publishing student work, it would be essential to read and follow the school
districts Internet Safety and Use Policy.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity:
Students are more technologically savvy than in previous years simply because of the amount of technology
now available in their environment. Learning to use these tools is essential to their navigation of the world
after secondary education. Learning to use multimedia tools in the mathematics classroom can directly 1
impact their ability to achieve success in later endeavors.
