LESSON PLAN TITLE:


Introduction to Microsoft Word

C O N C E P T / TO P I C TO T E A C H :
Introducing students to Microsoft Word and getting them familiar with the
software.

GENERAL GOAL(S):
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to successfully change
the font type, font size, align text, and type their name.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Familiarize students with the font section on the command ribbon.
Successfully locate the fonts and font sizes.
Successfully locate the color swatches.
Type their full name.
Teach students the difference between Caps Lock and Shift when
capitalizing letters.
Have students print their document.

R E Q U I R E D M AT E R I A L S :
Computer
Microsoft Word

A N T I C I PATO RY S E T ( L E A D - I N ) :
Class, today we are going to learn some basic functions in Microsoft Word.
Microsoft Word is a word processing software. Today, we will learn how to
type our names, change the font, change the font size, and learn how to
capitalize using two different buttons Shift and Caps Lock.

S T E P - B Y- S T E P P R O C E D U R E S :
1. Open Microsoft Word.
2. Have each student type their first and last name.
3. Demonstrate on the Smartboard how to highlight their name by
clicking and dragging the mouse.
4. Demonstrate on the Smartboard where the fonts and font sizes are
located.
5. Have them play around with different fonts and sizes.
6. Have students delete their name, so we can start fresh.
7. Teach the students the difference between Caps Lock and Shift,
when capitalizing the first letter of their name.
8. Let them choose a different font and font size.
9. Have each student print their name, in student number order.

PLAN FOR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:


Put 3 examples on the Smartboard for students to recreate.

1. Classroom
a. Times New Roman, size 18, red, capitalize using Shift key
2. STUDENT
a. Arial Rounded, size 22, blue, capitalize using Caps Lock
3. learning
a. Lucida Handwriting, size 20, purple

ASSESSMENT BASED ON OBJECTIVES:


From the print out, students will be given 1 point for each of the following:

Successfully typing their name using the Shift key.


Using a different font from the default font upon opening the program.
Using a larger font size.
Changing the color from black to any other color.
5 participation points will be given for independent practice.

We will use this exercise as an introduction to typing complete sentences,
using proper capitalization.
