INTRODUCTION

Penton O verseas developed ImmersionPlus specifically for interm e

diate and advanced foreign language students who need extra practice
in conversation, hut aren't able to live in a foreign country for the
im m ersion experience.

You've already built a vocabulary, and studied the grammar. You're

able to have limited conversations. Still, unless you regularly engage
in everyday conversations in the target language, you'll have difficulty
honing yom listening, com prehension, and conversational abilities.
Once you do develop these skills, though, you'll be able to use the lan
guage you've studied, for school, business or pleasure.

ImmersionPlus brings the native speakers to you, providing a variety

o f conversations between several people from different regions where
the target language is spoken. M any foreign language students find
that native sp e a k a s converse too rapidly to be understood instead
o f hearing and com prehending the words, students are still trying to
translate them into linglish, word by word. Inevitably, they get lost,
and can't keep up with what's being said.

With ImmersionPlus, we've taken seven brief stories divided into

short dialogues, each repeated three times:

I. First, the native speakers converse at a natural pace, helping you

T h is Im m e rslo n P iu s program consists o f four series o f d ialogues,

each divided into four sections w hich are arranged alternately
th roughout the program . T his form at will be m ore ch allenging in
d eveloping y o u r listening and com prehension skills. T he g ist o f
each conversation is heard p rior to each individual section. Each
dialogue will be heard three tim es, first at norm al conversational
pace, next spoken slow ly w ith c le a r and careful pronunciation, and
then repeated at the norm al pace. T h is booklet contains the en tire
recorded text as w ell as th e E nglish translation o f the entire pro
gram .

Dialogue 1; Dining Out

Jenny and her husband. B ill, have previously m ade plans to
dine out this evening. T hey will be deciding w here to g o and you
w ill then follow alo n g w ith them on their evening out.

Dialogue 2: The Fishing Trip

A father and his m arried son, M ark, are d iscussing the possi
bility o f a fishing trip for the follow ing w eekend. T une in as they
m ake their plans and then jo in them o n th eir outing.

Dialogue 3: The Ocean Cruise

W illiam and Janice have b een considering taking a cruise
vacation. L isten in as they m ake th eir plans, w hich w ill also include
Janice's m other, and then accom pany them o n th eir trip.

Dialogue 4: Going Shopping

Sylvia and her friend, M irielle, are arranging to g et together
for som e C hristm as shopping. T hey w ill firet be d eciding w hen to
go a n d then you w ill follow along w ith them as they shop.

P a rt 1: Bill and his wife, Jenny, have planned to go out for dinner thi*
evening. Bill has just arrived home from work. He and Jenny are relaxing
for a moment while they decide where to go.

P a rt 1: A man and his married son, Mark, are arranging a fishing trip. They
are in the fathers living room watching a ball game on television.

Le pre: Dis, Marc que dirais-tu daller la pche samedi matin? Il

parait que les perches mordent bien!
Father: Hey Mark what do you say to running up to the take on Saturday
morning Jbr a tittle fishing? I hear the bass are neatly biting!

Le fits: Euh, je ne sais pas. Thrse voudrait que je peigne les volets same
di. C 'est toute une histoire.
Son: Hm, I m not sure. Terri wants me to paint the shutters this Saturday.
What a project!

L e pre: Eh bien, aliens! On en reparlera la mi-temps. On dirait quils

better. Looks like they might score here!

Dialogue 3: The O cean C ruise CD 1: Track* 8-10

P a rt 1: William and his wife, Janice, ate planning a vacation for the next
summer. They want to take a cruise and are considering where and when to
go and which cruise line to take.

Guillaum e: Regarde ces prospectus. Je les ai eus l'agence de voyage en

face de mon bureau. Nous avons le choix entre beaucoup de beaux voyages.
William: Take a look at these folders. I got them from the travel agency
across from m y office We can choose from some great trips.

Janice: Fais voir! Mon Dieu j ai dj choisi mon prfr!

Janice: Let's see! Oh bey I've already picked my favorite!

Guillaum e: Celui-ci nest que le premier et le plus cher, je dois ajouter.

WUUam: Well, maybe we could go in autumn. I t s really pretty then and
quite a bit cheaper.

Janice; Okay, autumn it is but what about my mother? Remember she's
coming to visit us in October.

Part 1 : 1\vo ladies are planning a shopping trip into town the following
Saturday. They are speaking on the telephone and both are busy cooking
dinner for their families.

Mireille: All, Sylvie?

Mirlelle: Hi. Syhia?

Sylvie: Oui.
Sylvia: Yes.

Mireille; C 'est Mireille. Comment a va?

Mirlelle: This Is Mirielle. How's it going?

Sylvie: Trs bien, merci! Et toi? Est-ce qu'Albert est rentr de son voyage?
Sylvia: Just great! Yourself? Albert get back from his trip?

Mireille: Oui, Albert est de retour. Moi, je vais bien, mais il est rentr tard
hier soir et de mauvaise humeur. Ces voyages d'affaires lirritent toujoun.
Je suis en train de lui prparer un super repas fait maison. Tu sais, tous ce*
diners au restaurant ...?
Mirlelle: Oh, yes, A lberts back I m fine, but he got in late last night In a

P art 2: Bill and Jenny, having decided to dine at the Pizza place, arrive at the
parting lot entrance. They are going to park and get a table.

Guillaume: Tu es certaine que c'est ici? a me semble un peu trop tgaa
pour une pizzeria. Et o allons-nous garer la voiture? C'est bond! /
BIU: You sure this is the place? Seems kind o f fancy fo r a Pizza place. nd
where are we going to park? The place is jammed!

Jennie: Voil, quelquun l-bas qui sen va. L-bas, derrire, droite! Vite,
vas-y avant que lautre voiture ne sy range!
Jenny: There's someone going out over there. Over there, around to the
right. Quick! Grab it before that other car pulls in!

Guillaum e: Ouf! Et dire que nous allions viter la circulation! J esp

BiU: Whew! And we were trying to avoid traffic jams! I hope there's not

Dialogue 2: Tbe Fishing Trip CD 1: Tracks 17-1
Part 2: The father and son have arrived at the lake early Saturday morning.
They are getting their fishing tackle and supplies out of the van and putting
the boat in the water.

Le fils: Alors papa, quest-ce quon a oubli cette fois-ci?

Son: Well, Dad, what did we forget this time?

Le pre: Ne m en parle pas! La dernire fois, ctait un dsastre. Cette fois-

ci, j ai fait une liste. Ne tinquite pas, nous avons tout apport!
Father: Don 't even mention that word! Last time it war a disaster. I made a
list this time so don't worry. Weve got it all!

Le fils: Chiche ! Si tu n as rien oubli, moi je suis sr d avoir oubli quelque

chose. De toute faon, cest une belle journe et je crois quon est arrivs
au lac avant la foule. Attends, laisse-moi t aider porter la glacire de
pique-nique. Je ne voudrais pas que tu laisses tomber la bire!
Son: I wouldn't bet on it. i f you didnt forget something I'll bet 1 did.
Anyway, it's a beautiful day and I think that we got here before the take got
too crowded. Here, let me lift that cooler out. Wouidnt want you dropping
the beer!

Son: Okay. Do you want your dark glasses too? It s going to be really bright
out there. I think I'll bring my trunks. A little dip after lunch would really
fee l good.

Le pre: Oui, mais prends aussi ta crme solaire. Sinon, tu vas tre tout
brler.
Father: Okay, but you 'd better bring your sunscreen with you. You ll be
burnt to a crisp otherwise.

Le fils: O est-elle? Tu en as apport, toi?

Son: Where is il? Did you bring some?
Le pre: Et bien! Voil ce que j'ai oubli. Nous voici sans crme solaire
pendant toute une journe au soleil. Je ny ai pas du tout pens. Jespre que
je n ai pas oubli les casse-crotes!
Father: Oh boy, here we go already. No sunscreen fo r a day in (he sun. I
never even thought about it. / hope that we didn lforget the sandwiches'.

Le (Ils: Ou bien les hameons, lessence, lpuisette ou une des ces choses
que nous avons oublies la dernire fois. Nous devrions faire une fois pour
toute une liste de tout ce que nous devons apporter et puis vrifier si tout est
l avant de monter dans la camionnette.
San: Or the fish hooks, or gasoline or fish bag or whatever we forgot last
time! We should make up a standard master list o f everything and check It
out before we even gel in the van to leave.

Le pre: C'est une bonne ide. Esprons maintenant que nous attrapperons

Father: That i a good idea. Now lei s hope that we catch enough fish to need

P a rt 2: Its October, and Janice, William and Janice's mother are heading
down to the port to board the ship for their cruise vacation

L a m re: Penscs-tu que nous avons tout ce dont nous aurons besoin? Je n'ai
encore jamais fait de croisire. Je ne sais pas si j'ai vraiment fait le bon
choix de vtements.
Mother: Do you think have everything we'll need1 1've never been on a
cruise ship before I don t really know i f I've made the right choices on
my clothes.

Janice: Ne t'inquite pas, maman. Ce sont les vacances , de toutes faons, je

suis sre qu'il y a des tas de boutiques bord ainsi que dans les ports o nous
accosterons, au cas o tu aurais oubli quelque chose.

two or three sections, and, again, arc arranged alternately through
out the program. This format will be more challenging in develop
ing your listening and comprehension skills. The gist of each con
versation is heard prior to each individual section. Each dialogue
will be heard three times: first at a normal conversational pace, next
spoken slowly with clear and careful pronunciation, and then
repeated at the normal pace. This booklet contains the entire
recorded text as well as the English translation of the entire program.

course early Saturday morning eager to begin their weekly game.
