I tapped my fingers against my desk impatiently. High school was so tedious. Even the kids who have lost most of their braincells to drugs look like they might die of boredom. Of course this class wasn't exactly helping my opinion about school. I should have dropped it but lets face it, it's not like I have anything better to do at this hellhole. This class is called Housing. I thought it would be like interior design; style is one of the things that usually come naturally to me, but it turns out all we do are word searches. So since I finished the work in mere seconds I usually brought other work with me. Really, it's not like the teacher is going to check if we are actually doing what she assigned us. The not so lovely couple behind me makes out every single class. Well it's not like they have enough braincells to do anything else. The work I brought with me is some research from way back, when humans were considered fair game and were either used as slaves or a quick meal for the vampire part of the worlds population. There are roomers that those old times may be coming back. As our teacher, who's name I had not tried to learn and therefore did not know, was trying to get the class to order (with no such luck) the bell rang. I quickly scooped up my things and walked out the door. Most of my classes were way easy and being kind of a loner I usually got most of my homework done in class so I almost never bothered actually taking anything home with me. So there was no point in making a side trip to my locker. I walked outside and sighed in frustration as the sun shone brightly over the town. Of course I was one of the only people who felt that way about it. Most people seemed to enjoy the sun but having more hyperactive senses then most people made it just a little bit uncomfortable. I walked home as usual. It had taken me a year and a half after getting to high school to make it clear that I was to be left alone and by this time most people seemed to have gotten the message loud and clear. I say most because every once in a while some guy would try his luck and I would ignore him. It could be the same guy over and over for all I could tell them apart. It's not that I was a total bitch (okay I was kind of a bitch). It was just that I didn't pay close enough attention to differences in people to notice. I couldn't afford to pay attention to people; all my attention always had to be on the things that endangered the lives of these totally innocent oblivious humans that thought monsters didn't exist. Of course all those humans were wrong but blissfully happy in their ignorance and nobody wanted to be the one to tell them otherwise. On the bright side, it was a very short walk back to my house and then I could have lunch/dinner.
That thought made me smile. I made cupcakes yesterday and I only had a sugar stick today for breakfast. That might seem odd but my diet was pretty much made of sugar and anything that I could combine with sugar that was extremely sweet. The truth is that even though it is no way against my will that I have this diet I also don't have another choice. Things like veggies, salads, meats, yogurts and cheese, bread and grains, and milk, made me shudder. Those things tended to make me really sick. It was quite ironic that if anybody tried to beat me up and nothing happened a cup of milk would certainly do the job. The reason for my diet was that I was a half vampire, half human hybrid. There were only 5 or 6 others in existence around the world and those ones lived as normal vampires by drinking blood so there were few who even knew of are existence. According to my father I was the only half vampire alive today who lived this way. * * * “ But daddy, why can I live this way and not others?” I'd asked when I was 10 and someone at school made fun of how many cookies I ate, told me I was going to be fat, and then I ran home to daddy where he patiently explained that my body worked different then theirs, so no, I wasn't going to get fat, and apparently I couldn't. He smiled and pulled me onto his lap. “ Because you are human enough that your body accepts sugar in that raw form but vampire enough for your body to reject healthy foods. Your blood is mostly made up of sugar and liquid of course so that is what allows your blood to regenerate itself enough that you don't have to take blood from others. Most vampires don't know this so when, every once in a while, one of you is born the vampire parent takes over and gets them on that diet right away and allows them to live like a normal vampire. Their system turns a little more vampire than human which allows them to live that way. However, being a doctor I came up with the theory that you would be able to live the way you do now and I am happy to be right. Never being pushed either way your body is exactly half and half. In a way, the way you are living right now is like a case of extreme diabetes where your body simply makes to much insulin and not enough sugar.” I smiled finally understanding a bit better. By all accounts kids my age usually wouldn't have understood any of that but my brain was developing faster than most. * * * After that incident my father (being a doctor) informed the elementary school and my high school that I had a special type of diabetes so my teachers no longer made faces when I brought sweets to school. But I didn't want any more attention than I was already getting, so I started combining supper and lunch and simply buying lolly pops that I took with me to school every day. I laughed out loud at how many I had stashed in my locker at this moment. By this time I was already home. It was small since only my father and I lived here and we didn't need that much space. Plus many years ago my parents payed a witch to put a spell around the house and around me to hide my vampirec aura. The truth is everyone has an aura based on there race. Vampires aura is red, witches are purple, the Fae people are yellowish green and werewolves are yellow. Humans are blue but of course they can't see auras the way the supernatural world can. Nothing besides the occasional help from a witch who was a friend of my mother did I have much to do with the supernatural world either....until I started hunting them. It's my self employed job that I kill all the monsters who have a liking for humans and who no longer listen to the laws of our world, since the high council no longer punishes them the way they used to. So to sum up I'm a half vampire supernatural assassin/hunter who likes lolly pops and cupcakes.
I stare off into space as I eat my marble cupcake with chocolate icing. “Lulu?”, I'm not startled by the voice coming from right beside me as I heard his car pull up, getting out and every step he took to get right beside me. I simply chose to ignore those noises until he could sit down and I could think of other things. I smiled at him but then stifled a sigh when I saw what face he was wearing today. Some days he's just happy to spend time with me while I help make dinner and we talk about his work. Every once in a while I complain about how dull school is. Today is one of those days when he tries to talk me out of something I've decided to do like, say, hunting vampires and werewolves who are still stronger than me even though I'm much stronger then most humans and much less breakable. “ You know what? How about we watch a movie tonight?”, he says with that knowing smile that says how much he knows that's exactly what I would like to do. but... “Can't”, I say as I push the paper towards him. On the front page is an article about a young girl who went missing just last night who was supposedly kidnapped out of her house. “ Lulu, be reasonable, It could have been anyone who took her and it isn't up to you to save everyone.” But I was already shaking my head. “ You know humans don't kidnap from out of peoples houses and it is up to me, seeing as how nobody else will do anything about it.” This is an argument he brought almost daily because as much as he agrees these types of people had to be stopped he wasn't the most thrilled that I was the one volunteering to try to stop them. I say try because even though I am getting better I cannot take them on if there are more then 2 of them in on it and even that is impossible some days. Knowing that I am working alone is his second greatest argument so I wasn't really surprised... “Can't you try to find someone who will help you? Anyone who help you? One of these days you will be up against way more then you can handle and then nobody will be there to stop those people.” Though his point was the same the way he said it hit my weakness. My need to protect people. I couldn't stand the thought of all those creatures taking advantage of my absence to continue more of their more sick and disturbing crimes who's numbers had gone down since I had started hunting. I swallowed. And pushed on with my main argument against 'help'. “ But dad, even if I could find someone who knew about the world we live in and was willing to help me what are the chances that they would actually be able to help me without either getting in the way or just adding on to the number of people I have to keep alive.” This was a valid point and completely the reason I wouldn't risk it. That, and I had major trust issues which was why I didn't have any friends. Unfortunately he wasn't going to let this subject completely drop. “ At least stop by Leanne, to she what she's heard around. You could always just test them yourself to see if there good enough to help you out and it won't kill you to look”, he paused and stood up, “ But it could end up killing you if you don't.” He picked up my cupcake plate and put it in the dish washer, then left with his usual 'don't be home too late',which both of us knew would be ignored.
I grabbed my bag that carried my lolly pops and my weapons, put on my black coat (though I don't really get cold) for camouflage purposes and left. I did feel bad about putting my life in danger, especially after mom left, but there was really no way around it. I would visit Leanne tomorrow though I doubt she knew anybody who just happened to be looking for a job as an assassin but if it made my dad feel a bit better.... I slowed down and started to focus when I was about a block away from the house. That was my first stop, seeing as I needed to find out for sure if it was a vampire and to get the scent to track. Even if it was a human I could just beat him up and leave him somewhere for the police to find. And then hopefully return the little girl home...if I could. Sometimes I'm too late and that's the hardest. Another reason my dad doesn't like this though he wouldn't say so is what it does to me emotionally as well as physically when something goes wrong. It was darker now so I got off the sidewalk, hid in the shadows of the trees and lost my boring human pace. I saw the house in the News that morning so it was easy enough to recognize. That and there was yellow tape all over it where the police were searching for clues. I had to say that modern forensics were pretty amazing but it was nothing compared to having a nose like mine. I hid just underneath the window of what I assumed was the little girl's room but before I was a meter away I caught the smell. It was definitely a vampire. I stood for a second letting the scents swirl around in my mouth and up my nose. When I was sure I had it, I went on the trail. It wasn't as easy to fallow as it would have been this morning but thank goodness it was still there. It was late enough by this point that I didn't have to worry about many people seeing me so I picked up the pace. The good news was that the trail was fairly well hidden behind houses or in shadows so I could focus more on speeding up. Time was a very important element in situations like these and as much as it was important not to be seen, I wasn't putting that over the life of an innocent child. As I ran I barely noticed I was getting farther and farther away from town as the scent was growing stronger. When the scent was strong enough I slowed down to take in any possible entry and exit points. The place was so cliché I almost rolled my eyes. An abandoned warehouse about a mile out of town with no lights on. At least there was trees to hide behind or I would have been completely out in the open. I figured whoever it was, that they were working alone. If there were more there would be no reason to get this far out of town. Guess I could afford a head on approach then. I ran up and slipped in through the side door. Even if I wasn't planning this out no need to let them know I was coming before I attacked. The front room was mostly filled with old boxes that no one ever bothered to move. I couldn't spend time on exits now that would come later. I carefully slid around one of the larger stacks when I felt cold breath on my neck. I flew around in time to get a kick right in my chest knocking the wind out of me. Before I could exhale he had already grabbed me around the neck and pulled me off my feet. Luckily this didn't suffocate me but It was uncomfortable and difficult to get a kick in. Difficult but not impossible.
He cursed this time as my foot connected with one of his ribs but his grip didn't loosen. He pulled me up against the wall pulled me back and then whacked my head against the wall and held me there. “ What the hell are you?” he spit as he ground his teeth together. I didn't answer as I looked on how to get in a second attack but I was running out of options. “None of your business”, I snarled and caught him in the jaw with my fist. It was hard enough that I heard a crack and he let go as he fell backwards. I knew I wouldn't get a second chance, so I got out my bow and arow quick as a flash and struck him in the chest. Of course it didn't kill him put it gave me a chance to set up another and point it straight at his head. “Now, I smiled angelically at him though I was now started to feel the slight concussion in the back of my head. “ I think I will be asking the questions.” I put the prick of the arrow into his forehead for emphases. “ Now where is that little girl you kidnapped?” He replied by attempting to spit at me. I say attempting because I easily dodged it. Well looks like I wasn't going to get any information out of him. I let the arrow fire into his skull and forced myself to watch as his head shattered. A broken head most of the time will kill a vampire but I'd probably have to haul his body out back to burn it, just in case. Now for the bad part, I swallowed as I put my bow and arrow away. They might seem a little medieval for a weapon against vampires and werewolves, but that was the weapon with which I had the best aim and when facing multiple opponents, allows me to attack from far off. I raced around back hoping against all hope that I wouldn't see what I'd seen so many times before. Of course the girl was there and was surprisingly not bloody. My eyes widened as my hope grew and I raced foreword to check her pulse. It was there thudding loudly and healthy as I checked for any injuries. There seemed to be a light bump on the head from where he knocked her out but not life threatening. Looking closely she looked similar to how I looked at that age. The curly blond hair and lighter skin with the big dimpled cheek. I planned ahead about how to return the girl to her house as I picked her up. That part was fairly easy. But As I headed for the door I heard another heart in the room besides mine and this first girls. Hidden in the corner was another who was very much awake and terrified beyond words. I held the girl in one hand and motioned for the other girl to follow. “ It's really not safe for you hear.” I motioned that I was weaponless with my empty hand. “ I promise I won't hurt you, and that if you tell me where you live I'll take you home.” “ I'm really sorry this had to happen to you but everything will be okay now”. The girls lip seemed to quiver as she hesitantly stepped foreword. “Promise”, she whispered. I nodded, “Promise”, I said and held out my hand. This time she walked foreword and took it. “ What's your name?”, I asked as I led her toward the door. “ Charlotte”, she answered still a little shaky. “ That's such a pretty name, gosh I wished my mommy had named me that”. She smiled a little at that and squeezed my hand. She looked to be about 4 or 5 and the girl I was carrying was either five or six. I was okay with kids but that was mainly because of my appearance then anything else. For some reason blonds with curly hair and fuller cheeks seemed like really trustworthy people, or at least someone not capable of killing and burning the undead as I so often did. Put that together and then talk
like a 5 year old and I had enough trust to at least get her home. I led them out a different room then last time not wanting to frighten Charlotte with the dead body. Right when we shut the door and I heard the much slower much more unnatural heartbeat did I wish I had gone with the other room. I immediately pulled her back right in front of the door and leaned the other girl who was still unconscious up against her in the same second that I had my bow and arrow out again. I got in the stance and pointed it toward the vampire hidden in the shadows. “ Show yourself” I demanded trying to make my voice less shaky. Fighting a vampire was one thing. Fighting a vampire with two possible hostages this close by was another situation altogether. “ Don't shoot okay?” says the teenage vampire walking out of the shadows with his hands up in surrender. I didn't put down my guard because one, just because you look like a teenager when your a vampire doesn't mean you aren't well over a hundred and second because even though he put his hands up doesn't mean he still couldn't put up a fight the second I lose my guard. “Who are you?” “ Danny,” he answered right away and even though he could be much older I swear he was only 15 or sixteen and he looked honestly scared. “ And why are you here?” “I don't know!” he cried frustrated. I could usually tell when someone was lying but I couldn't pick up any hint of it here. Either this 'kid' was really dangerous or really stupid. He took one step into the light and I saw his eyes. Usually a vampire has a second ring, a darker ring in the middle of there eyes from drinking blood but this kids eyes were clear as day. In that second I lowered my bow a bit as I realized that this really was a newborn vampire and not just days or months old but hours. And here he was with 2 human children and a burning throat only satisfied by killing set children. I quickly put my bow and arrow away and ran at him with the rope I also kept inside my bag. I threw him to the ground and started tying him up. “Hey!”, he shouted struggling. “What did I do?” “ In around one hour you will completely loose control and will either attack me or those two children over there”. I yanked my chin in the direction of Charlotte and whoever the other child was. “ Or I can tie you up and send someone over later to feed you and teach you how not to be a monster. I'm sorry but I really can't take a chance here and I have to take those two home.” To my surprise he stopped struggling and let me tie him up. I couldn't tell if he was scarred or not this time but I had to feel sorry for him. “Look this isn't your fault, and I don't want to hurt you or leave you here so I'll promise to send someone to get you later”. I stood up and was about to turn and leave him when he lifted his head. “You said in an hour right? That means that in an hour if your still not back yet and anyone else comes along then I could kill them. But if you take me with you then I can help you get then home quicker and we can take care of this before I lose it”. He pleaded with what I now saw as not only fear but panic at the thought of hurting someone. I could relate to that feeling only to well, so maybe it was that
or maybe it was because he did have a point, that I bent down again and mostly untied him. I dragged him back over to the door and bent down next to Charlotte. “ I know I might have been a little scary but I have to get you to home. This is Danny.” I pointed towards him. “and he might be a good guy but just in case we are going to keep him tied up and bring him along okay?” She nodded a little trying to be brave and pulled the other girl up. I took the other girl in my arm and held on to Danny's rope with the other hoping Charlotte could keep up. We made our way out of the warehouse and down the street when I realized we couldn't go at this pace or he would lose control well before we got even one of them home. So after a minute or so I got Charlotte to ride on Danny's back and I pulled them into a jog. At this pace it wasn't nearly as long to get back to town I hid us in the shadows as Charlotte ran up the steps to her house and watched to make sure she got in okay. When I heard her mother gasp and Charlotte burst into tears I sighed. “One down and one to go,” I murmured. Danny didn't say anything as we full out ran the other girl home in mere second and slipped her into the house, and then made a bunch of noise so the cops would notice her and tend to her head. I checked my watch. It had only taken half an hour to get both of them home. “One last stop”, I told him as I tried to remember the way to Leanne's place. Well I told myself I would visit her tomorrow and it was technically tomorrow even though it was about 1:30 in the morning. He seemed relieved by this news as I realized how much pain he was probably in right now. Well if he attacked anyone right now it would be me and I can handle myself, I told myself as I untied him. “I really am sorry about this, but I couldn't take the chance.” “Then why are you untying me now?” He seemed really surprised and afraid again that he would hurt someone. “ Because no one's around for you to attack”. “ What about you”, he asked softly with weary eyes. “ I think I can handle myself against a new born vampire”, I snorted. He seemed a little relieved by this but not completely. How much had I scarred him before? Leanne's place was small to but filled with flowers and beautiful designs covering every inch. The part of the house you could see was bright yellow with a dark blue door. I went right up to it and started hammering my hand against the door. “ What are you doing?” he hissed. I shrugged. “ Making sure she wakes up.” even though that wasn't completely true seeing as I could hear her coming already. I just enjoyed annoying her. She made it to the door and flung it open. “ For heavens sakes Lulu what do you want at this time of night?!” “ Some tea and...,” I pulled Danny foreword. “Your much experienced babysitting services”. “ Oh,” she gasped seeing the eyes. Then turning quickly to scold me. “ Then maybe you should have brought him in instead of beating up my door”. But she moved out of the way as I brought him inside. The biggest room in th house was her kitchen as she needed a lot of space for her herbs and baking supplies for when I came to visit. It painted and filled with earthy colours like brown and green. We sat him down and I had time to actually see him. I was probably right with my earlier guestimation of his
age. He also had brown hair and green eyes. He was very gangly like most teenage boys that have just started to fill out and he was only about 5'10 in height. I was a very average 5' 7 in height but most of it was taken up by my legs. I had brown eyes that everyone said was the same colour as chocolate. I thought the colour resembled dirt but what did I know? Danny was looking slightly anxious as he waited for Leanne to do something. I knew she was getting some herbs together to calm down the burn in his throat. I was never here before when she helped out a new born but she had told me about it before. “ Here you go dear,” she said as she handed him the cup. He looked at me and raised his eyebrows as if to say 'Do I want to know what this is', I thought of the more interesting ingredients she kept in her cupboard and shook my head. He shrugged and chugged it down. When he was finished he exhaled in relief as the burn receded. “ Now I know it feels like it's dulled a lot but you really ought to get some blood before it wears off. This potion was just to make sure that when you drink you are in control to stop before you kill somebody.” Then she turned to me. “Since you found him you can be a donor for today.” “ What?” “ Your the closest and I'm to old to give blood anymore.” S he saw my expression and added, “ I very much doubt he will take enough to physically harm you.” I took a breath and walked over to Danny. “ You can take some of mine for now but try not to take too much kay?” He looked a little surprised but he nodded and took my hand. For a second his eyes flared with need then he sank his teeth into my wrist. I winced and waited for more pain but it didn't come. My eyes widened as my body warmed up and everything turned hazy. Was I fainting? I've never fainted in my life. I didn't even get sick. But even though I didn't know what it was like to faint I somehow knew that this wasn't it. I could feel the warmth from my body spread across my cheeks and kind of remember Leanne tugging me away ,but it wasn't till she actually pulled me free that everything came into focus again and thanks to my fast restoring blood by the time she brought over a lolly pop from my bag I was able to stand by myself and see everything clearly again. Unfortunately I was still bleeding so I grabbed a rag from under the sink and wrapped it around my wrist. I turned around and noticed Danny's reaction for the first time. He was shaking slightly and his eyes were wide. Leanne was murmuring reassurances to him. “What's wrong,” I whispered walking over. “ I'm so sorry,” he whispers his head in his hands. “ It's okay honey, the first one is always the worst. It will get much easier to manage as time goes on and you'll get used to it. Look, you were even strong enough to stop when I pulled her away.” She gently patted his shoulder while she talked. He lifted his head a bit and asked a question. “ I know, the thirst wasn't to bad but what about the other part?” She looked questioningly at him. “ What other part?” “ Oh god,” he whispered and put his head in his hands again. I walked over and patted his arm. “That part will get easier too.” I told him having no Idea if I was telling the truth. He removed his hands from his face. “ You felt it too.” he asked softly. “ I think so,” I answered. And I wasn't even making stuff up to make him feel better, something did happen though I really didn't want to find out what. I'd never felt so vulnerable before and it scared me.
Being completely lost Leanne checked us both closely. “ But your both okay now?” We both nodded and Danny stood up. Her eyes widened. “How did you do that?” “Do what?” he asked with his voice finally back to normal. But she just shook her head. “Amazing.” Danny and I looked at each other after that with neither one of knowing what is going on here. “ I must call your father at once and see what he thinks of this.” she called back as she started for the phone Danny and I just stood till he turned to me and raised one eyebrow. “ Your father?” he asked, “but your a vampire.” I shook my head as I realized part of the reason he was so confused when I offered him my blood. “ No, full vampires can't drink from each other.” “ Full vampires?” “ I'm only half. Half vampire and half human.” His eyes widened again. “ So you thinks that's why that happened to us.” I nodded and looked to where Leanne was on the phone with my father. “ She must think so too, which is why she freaked when you stood up. She told me once that after the first drink there are weeks or days before they can walk around again.” “ How is your dad supposed to know why?” “ He's a doctor, and he probably won't know for sure but he'll at least have a theory about it.” Leanne walks back in at the moment and gives me a very disapproving look. “ Lulu, wasn't there something else you were supposed to ask me about.” I bit my lip and started twirling my hair around my index finger. “Hmmm, well I'm sure I can find someone for you to train up. I know a few werewolves...” “ What are you talking about?” Danny interrupted. “ Well you see, Lulu can be quite reckless so her father is trying to get her a hunting partner .” Then he smiled a little crookedly, which was really quite cute...if not followed by this sentence. “ I'll help her. Just train my up and I will put my life on the line, to protect those who need protection.” I gave them both my best most horrified look but Leanne was smiling. “ Why what a perfect Idea. In that case maybe you should stay with Lulu for a while, while she trains you.” I was so surprised my jab dropped open and I started choking on words. “ N-n-no way, y-you can't be serious. He's just a new born, theres no way he'll be of any help, he'll end up getting himself killed.” I through my hands up in exasperation at what a bad Idea this was. “ Well you don't have to take him with you right away on a hunt. Train him up first then test him when you think he's ready. That should only take a little over a month.” I exhaled heavily. Well I could always just train him to defend himself, declare him unfit to hunt, and then send him somewhere else. That might sound harsh but her trust issues were in overdrive at the moment. “ Okay I'll train you. But how will we get him blood every two days.” “ From you of course.” “ No Way!!” Me and Danny both blurted at the same time. “ Oh, stop being such children. Look at how strong you both are. Danny is already standing which is very close to a miracle and you regenerate blood so fast it's like he never took any in the first place.”
Well I really didn't mind giving blood but she was kind of missing the major issue here. She sighed, rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. “ Just try it for a week or so, and if it doesn't get better, or if it gets worse I'll get someone to start sending bottles over to the house.” “ Alright,” I sighed. I still had a bit of work to do and I was tired. I walked over and gave her a hug. “ Thank you, I'll see you later.” “ No problem sweet heart just be careful would-ya?” “ Okay, come on Danny we have a body to clean up.” It wasn't soon after that that I was in bed and Danny was on the couch. It didn't take long to go back, pull the body out behind the warehouse, then burning the vampire and cleaning up the blood left inside. I was some where in between dream world and the real world when my dad rushed in. “ Honey theres a a boy out sleeping on the couch.” He whispered urgently. I yawned. “ Don't worry about it, Ill explain tomorrow, okay?” Alright he said reluctantly and left the room. I looked at the clock. It was about 3:00 which meant I could still get a couple hours if I fell asleep now. If almost on command my body relaxed and I drifted off, happily knowing that I had saved at least two lives that day. * * * When I woke up I knew something was coming. I was either going to have to deal with my dad or with Danny. With the intent of ignoring them both I grabbed my Ipod, cranked up the volume and went to go have breakfast. Luckily it was Saturday, so that's one thing I didn't have to deal with today. When I got down to the kitchen I was pleased to see no one there yet. I started quietly singing along with whatever song was playing on my Ipod and grabbed my emergency pop tarts out of the cupboard. I grabbed the apron that my dad insist I wear so I didn't have to wash all my cloths every time I baked since I tended to get flour everywhere. Then I got to work on making my favourite triple chocolate cookies. “ You're pretty good you know.” I yelped and as per usual got flour everywhere. “Sorry,” he said grabbing a cloth. “ What?” “ You're a good singer, did you ever take lessons?” I wiped off my hands with a dish towel and turned around. “ No, of course not. Do you really think I'd have time?” He shrugged. “just wondering,” then he bit his lip as if to keep from laughing. I followed his gaze to my apron. It was light blue and fairly plain and it did not have ruffles. “ Oh, shut it,” I flicked flour at him and rolled my eyes. Then went back to work and ignored him. I was so busy I didn't notice I had started singing again. As soon as I realized I stopped and settled for humming along with the next few songs. “ So let me get this straight,” he said as I was putting most of the cookies away and the box of pop tarts. “ Half vampires diet consists of cookies, pop tarts, and lolly pops.” “ And everything else that has at least 1 cup of sugar in it,” I added and looked at him.
For some reason he looked as if this explained a lot more than it did. “ What are you thinking about,” I asked suspiciously. He looked like I had caught him of guard with my question, then he blushed which I had never seen a vampire do before. “ It's just....your blood....it's really sweet and sugary. Like, worse then Coolaid.” Well that made sense but I didn't know why he was all uncomfortable about saying so. “ And...” I asked wondering why he was still blushing. “ And... It's the best fricken thing I ever tasted,” he blurted and then but his head in his hands. I walked over and put my hand on his shoulder. “ Hey you're a vampire remember? That's just how it is. You really don't need to feel embarrassed about anything.... and if you have nothing better to do today then I can start training you.” I said to change the subject seeing as I wasn't really helping. But one sure thing to help you get over something is to worry about something else. • * * Danny * * *
I just had to concentrate on my training. That was it. I could leave all this vampire stuff till later. I stood in a clearing in the woods behind the house, facing Lulu as she stretched, since she told me I didn't have too. “ Okay”, she said putting her hands on her hips. “ First thing you need to know are basic self defense and martial arts.” She took a few steps closer. “ Now hold out your hand in front of you.” I did as she said when she went forward and kicked my hand. But inside of having a sore hand a tremor went through my whole body and I fell right on my but. “Sorry,” she said as she pulled me up. “ but demonstrations are the best way I know how to teach.” She put her hand out the same way she showed me and motioned for me to try. I struck her hand but she didn't move at all. She continued to instruct me and show me what I was doing wrong for about an hour before I caught on. “ Oomph,” she winced as she fell straight on her back. “ Good job,” she said but she didn't move. “ Are you alright,” I asked alarmed. “Ya I'm okay,” she said as she pulled herself into a sitting position. “ Just hand me my bag would-ya?” I nodded and grabbed it for her. She pulled out a lolly pop and stood up as she put it in her mouth. “ Okay, now it's time for part two.” I starred at her in amazement. “ Don't you think you should take a break,” I said not looking at her. When I did she narrowed her eyes. Next thing I know I'm the one flat on my back. She walks over and smiles smugly. “ Never forget that, I can take care of myself,” she said cheerily then she pulls me up again. “ Now where were we?” We went on like that for a while. Then as a 'break' we practiced meditation. She seemed to know that I thought this, quite the joke. “ You know why even people with the best physical training lose fights?” I shook my head. “ It's because they panic at the point when the other fighter has the advantage. They forget all the training they know and the other person claims victory. Meditation isn't some stupid tradition so that you can drink tea. It's to teach you complete focus, so even when you could very well be seconds from death, you can use your mind to find your way out. Even though strength is a great advantage, it is your mind that is your greatest weapon.” She said completely serious. I took her warning seriously remembering how I felt when she held that arrow in my direction. Also remembering how I reacted by immediately giving up.
That's enough for today she said though it wasn't even dark yet. “ I can keep going,” I said eager to practice one of the head locks again. But she shook her head. “ That's not why we have to stop,” she said and even though I gave her a confused look she picked up her bag pulled out another lolly pop and started to head back inside the house. * * * Lulu * * * I set my things down inside and went and turned on the news, like I did every Saturday at 6:00. Nothing terribly, interesting at first. Traffic report, some kind of protest, etc... Then “…. In the next report, sources and police alike were shocked and amazed by the turn of events in the missing persons report of young Sabrina Clark and Charlotte Hamilton. Sabrina went missing a couple of days ago, when her parents reported a kidnapping from inside the house. She was found just this morning in the same house she was kidnapped from, unconscious, in her own bedroom. Police were alerted to the entry of Sabrina by some loud noises, which led them to suspect that either the person who returned her might have wanted her to be found.” “Charlotte went missing yesterday and we had barely reported her absence when she returned home, by herself. And ran straight into her mothers arms. She had said, quote, “ Superwomen saved me from a scary man. He had weird eyes with colorful circles...” Know one has seen anyone by this description so far...” “Yeah, and nobody is ever gonna...” I murmured. “ Sabrina was released this morning from the hospital in perfect health. And had returned home. She has no memory of anything that has happened and her parents would like to keep it that way....” I sighed in relief, glad that both girls were unharmed. I was also relieved that the girl named Charlotte didn't seem to have given them any clues to my identity, except for....... “ Superwomen?” his voice full of suppressed laughter. I rolled my eyes. “ It's the hair. Haven't you ever seen the old cartoons?” He shook his head and continued smirking. I shushed him to watch the rest of the News. Making sure the girls were both okay was only half the reason for watching the News tonight. Just because one problem was solved doesn't mean there aren't thousands more waiting. Luckily nothing having to do with the supernatural was on the News tonight, or nothing that my tracking or fighting skills could help with. I immediately got out my cell phone and texted my dad. Movie Night ???? He texted back almost as fast. Get off @ 8. You pick. No killing!!!! I rolled my eyes. Alright. C u then. ;) I shut my cell phone and went to get my bag with my allowance in it. “Going to go rent a movie. You can watch T.V. Till then if you want,” I called behind me. I had my hand on the door handle when Danny showed up behind me.
“ Can't I come?” He stuck his lip out, sulking. “ It will only take a couple of minutes. Can't I do it by myself,” I pointed out. I stuck out my bottom lip too and gave him my best puppy dog look. It didn't take long. “ Okay you win,but pick out a funny one, okay?” He conceded. “ Kay”, I called out triumphantly. Sometimes it annoyed me to do that look because it makes me look vulnerable and that it strictly against my own personal rule book on, 'how to stay alive'. But desperate times called for desperate measures, and you could only spend so much time with one person, without going mad!!! I stepped out onto the pavement and put my hands in my pocket. What I said about a few minutes wasn't necessarily true. This is one of the few things I didn't have to be in a rush for so I was going to take my sweet time. By this time the sun had just set and all the streetlights were on. Walking at night didn't scare me. My father once told me that he pitied the mugger who tried to attack me. Of course I wasn't bullet proof, but I could simply have him unconscious before he even thought of shooting me. It was a quiet night for the most part so when sound came from an alleyway between two buildings I could easily sense what the sound was and where it was coming from. The sound of what had first caught my attention was nothing significant. It was the sound that I had caught after that. The sound of Three deadly slow heart beats and the scream of two innocent people, who would most likely lose their lives tonight.
I made a split second decision on whether or not to follow them. Even though it may have been the most incredibly stupid decision I have ever made. I had to try to help them weapon or no weapon. I through the hood over my black zip up hoody and started carefully in the direction of the heartbeats. As I got closer I noticed one more heartbeat that sounded fairly human. For once in my life, I hoped that this was the heartbeat of another victim and not of not of werewolf, or we were all royally screwed. Werewolf heartbeats are almost exactly like humans except when they're changed they're a lot faster. Since I could hear three vampire heartbeats it seemed safe to assume they would each get a victim instead of having to share 2 victims among the three of them plus the werewolf. But no matter which way I was going to need some seriously good luck to survive tonight. Luckily I had a couple of knives with me just in case whenever I left the house and although I might not be able to kill any of them I could almost definitely get at least one of the people out safe. I kept following them thinking that I could maybe attack before we got to wherever they were planning to go, but then they would be more likely to suspect the attack and they could all attack at once. Best to try to get them separated. We ended up at a sketchy apartment building. Sketchy but still very much still in business. Now that I could see them from around a building across the street. I could see that one of my prayers was very much ignored. There was a werewolf after all and they left him outside to stand guard. Though luckily they were much slower then a vampire, unluckily they were amazing trackers. So I might be able to get him before he could contact the other three but if he lived tonight I would be in a lot of danger if I lived through tonight. I started across the street in a flash then went all the way behind the building 3 doors down from the building they went into. I jogged behind the three buildings to that one and moved along the wall to the
front. Then I was almost directly behind him when he half turned my way. I stopped my breathing short and tucked further along the side of the wall. He raised his face to the air to catch the scent but then simply shook his head and continued to stand guard. I had less then half a second to act. As quick and quiet as I was able, I shot right behind him, reached foreword and knocked him out with the hilt of my knife. His head snapped back and he collapsed. Before either of us was spotted I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and dragged him to the back of the building. I checked him for weapons and sighed. Just my luck that werewolves didn't usually carry weapons. Well, not of the usual kind anyway, but there teeth when they change could be quite deadly. It seemed cruel to do when he was already knocked out, but in this world, if it's not there life it will be yours. So I took my knife, and as quick and painlessly as possible, I drove it up into his head and killed him. I took his body and planted it behind a dumpster to be burned later, then turned back to the front of the house. The door was unlocked and it only took a second once inside to catch on to the scents of the vampires and to start following them through the building. When I got to their floor from the stairs, I slowed down in case they had another guard in front of the door of the room. Sure enough one of them was there keeping watch. Although this one would be much harder to surprise then the werewolf, at least I didn't have to face all three at once. Yet as soon as I prepared myself from around the corner another vampire came through the door of the room and yanked him inside with a smile and closed the door. I ground my teeth together at the loss of a chance to finish them off one by one instead of all three like I would have to do now. Looks like I would have to go at it the old fashioned way. I ran up and flung the door wide open in the faces of 3 shocked vampires and 2 terrified humans. Within a second I had attempted to fling the 2 daggers in the faces of the closest vampires and hurled myself at the third, ready to knock him out like I had done to the werewolf. Unfortunately, it never really works out that perfect. I had managed to get a knife in the heart of the first vampire, but the second had managed to catch his, and the third had managed to block my attack. Taking half as long as it had taken me too even open the door, he grabbed me by the wrist and flung me up against the wall. “ Well what do we have here,” he mocked, smiling savagely as he changed his hold to my neck. “ Close the door,” he ordered the one who wasn't paralyzed by my knife. He obeyed, then hissed at the two girls in the corner to be quiet. After they were quiet he turned to the one that was obviously the leader and waited for further instruction. I struggled slightly and looked for an opening, but unlike any before, he had me completely pinned. The most I could do to attack would be a head butt, but that would most likely only serve to knock me out and piss him off. “ Looks like we have a little kitty cat who wondered into the snakes den,” he laughed. “ Well you can flash those claws of your kitten but the most you can do now is beg for mercy and run.” His smile grew even more distorted and animal like, as he reached down and wrapped his hand around my ankle. He paused a second then in which he probably expected me to beg, and if that was his intention, he was disappointed. That disappointment probably only lasted a second though because the next second he had tightened his hand and snapped my ankle to the sighed.
I screamed like he probably expected but it was partly because of surprise. Any vampire could break a humans bones that easily but mine were much harder then their's. I looked up into his eyes for the first time and felt more fear then all my years of near death experiences altogether. His eyes were flat gray and as cold as ice. But the frightening part was not the colour but the rings around his eyes. All vampires that drink human blood have rings around their eyes but they develop over age and I had only ever met ones with 2 or 3. This particular vampire had five rings around his eyes marking him as one of the few vampires that were over 400 years old. “ Or not,” he said as tears welled up in my eyes but I blinked them away. I've had bones break before. The advantage to this is that now he was positive he had me, but if I could last a couple more hours my blood would run through my legs and feet till my ankle healed, and I would still have the surprise attack. Even though with surprise on my side there's nothing much that can stand up to a vampire with so many centuries of experience. although a smart person would admit defeat right about now, thats just not how I work. In the next couple of minutes he continued to taunt me, but unlike most villains while monologuing he actually remembered all the time he spent blabbing the more likely I was to find an escape. So whenever I made the tiniest movement or showed signs of being on the brake of an idea he would damage me. Distracting me from any chance of getting out of there and incapacitating me, he ended up breaking my wrist and I'm sure a few of my ribs along with my already broken ankle. He wasn't careful while he was hurting me and when he was about to break my other wrist his nail slashed along my hand. He went rigged eyes widening as he slowly lifted my wrist to his face. That's when I remembered what Danny had said to me the other day. “... It's the best fricken thing I have ever tasted!” “Shit”. I whispered and tried to pull my hand back. Of course it was useless. He lifted my wrist to his nose as my blood ran down it and closed his eyes. “ What a strange scent you have,” he murmured. “ What a freaken ugly face you have,” I retorted. He didn't seem to have heard me though. He drew my hand to his mouth and bit me. I tried to struggle but every time I was close to getting in a kick he pushed his hand calmly into my injured ribs and I stopped and gasped. Eventually I really couldn't fight anymore. He was taking to much of my blood and not giving it enough time to regenerate. Plus it was already working to hard trying to heal all the broken parts of my body. The scent of my blood seemed to have reached the other one. “ Hey man, let me try it.” He wined. The leader simply ignored him. “ Hey!” said the other, angry about being ignored, he tried to grab my other wrist. The leader broke off and hissed at him and backhanded him into the wall. He got up and went into a crouch ready to retaliate. The leader seemed to remember my existence and smashed my head hard enough into the wall that I'm sure I blacked out for a few seconds. When I woke up I was on the floor. Everything was fuzzy but I was relieved that I couldn't really feel my injuries anymore. I moved my head around a little and saw that the two vampires had frozen in place, gazes locked on something in the corner. Very faintly I registered the smell of smoke. I looked over to where the other two were staring and saw the vampire that I had stabbed earlier, or what was left of him anyway, as he burned. Even though I was a little confused this didn't shock me for some reason until another figure walked
into the room. Both the other vampires gazes switched to him as they jumped up. “ No no, carry on, don't mean to be a party crasher.” He smiled smugly saying very much the opposite. After a second the two vampires attention was still very much focused on the boy at the door. He sighed, “ Have it your way then.” As he lifted both his hands. In his hands I saw two fireballs forming. The two vampires hissed and growled and launched themselves at the boy. “ Tsk. Tsk,” he shook his head and threw the fireballs at the vampires. They both screamed in pain and tried to put the fire out by patting themselves down and one of them even started rolling around the floor but the fire didn't go out. Satisfied that at least the world was rid of these three I closed my eyes and drifted off as everything went foggy and dark. * * * “ Lulu, common, wake up dammit!” How rude, I thought. Leave me alone I'm tired. Hunting vampires was a very energy zapping career after all. I gasped as something hit down hard on my chest. I choked a little and whimpered as my injuries came into better focus. It was hard to breath and it felt like some idiot had parked their car on top of my chest. I tried to lift my hand and tell them to get it off me, but everything felt strangely heavy. “ She's breathing!” I heard a voice yell in delight it sounded like a girls voice. The boy's voice didn't sound so sure. “ Ya but she won't be breathing for long unless she starts healing.” “ Then what do you suppose we do then?” Asked the girl sounding annoyed. “ I don't.....” Started the boy in an exasperated tone but I interrupted him. “ Stop yelling, I'm trying to sleep here.” I said trying to sound loud and irritated but instead sounding quiet and week. “ Umm Lulu ? This really isn't the best place for that.” He said and thats when I realized I had no Idea who he was or where I was. I managed to open my eyes and looked straight into Navy blue ones. What a strange colour, I thought as I blinked a couple times. “ Who are you?” I asked frowning. I already had trust issues and now whoever this strange boy was already new my name and was a little to close for comfort. He had dark hair that was straight and hanging in his eyes. He skin was a bronze colour that looked oddly warm as did the way he was looking at me. “ Gabriel, and this is my sister Becca.” He gestured to the girl beside him. She on the other hand had fiery red hair and light blue eyes, along with very light skin. They looked so opposite that I pulled my eyebrows together in confusion and just looked back and forth between them. Gabriel bit back a smile and Becca rolled her eyes. “ Adopted sister, but you know, I think we can hold off this conversation till later,” she added and Gabriel looked very sober. “ So what are we going to do?”asked Gabriel. Becca didn't answer and I was too tired to think. “ Wait,” he said all of a sudden with a light in his eyes. “ You're a half vampire right?” I narrowed my eyes. Very few people knew I was a half vampire. “ I'll take that as a yes, so....If you take some of my blood that should help you heal...” “ NO!!!” I said as loud as I could which was barely above a whisper. My eyes widened in alarm. “ Why not?” He asked curious about the way I responded. “Well, as you pointed out I'm a half vampire but I'm just barely half way between vampire and human. If I drank blood, the vampire blood would take over and I wouldn't be able to live this way anymore.”
“ Okay, what do you think we should do?” He asked. “ Thanks for getting rid of them but you can go home now. I'll go home in a few hours.” It was Gabriel's turn to look horrified this time. “You want us to leave you here?” I nodded and closed my eyes. I would heal enough in my ankle soon enough that I might be able to limp home. “ Sorry, but no can do.” He said. I ignored him. Until I felt his hands slip under my back and the other under my legs and lift me up. I gasped in pain and he apoligized. “ Put me down!” I tried to say it in my usual commanding voice but my voice quivered pathetically. “ Shhh. Don't worry. Me and Becca are just going to take you home.” “ I don't trust you,” I frowned. “ You don't really have a choice,” he pointed out. I shook my head a bit. “ Whatever,” I mumbled. I was way too tired to argue. No matter what these people were going to do with me, I couldn't stop them anyway. I closed my eyes again and was out in seconds to the soft sound of his breathing. • * * Gabriel * * * I was glad when she fell asleep, but her breathing was way too uneven to be reassuring. I internally cursed myself for almost being too late. How long had I planned too intervene if she got in over her head? I shook my head in disgust. There's no reason I shouldn't have been ready for this. I made it down the stairs trying not to jostle her and wake her up. I knew her dad was a doctor so at least he would be able to help. When I got out of the apartment building I hugged her closer as I carried her to the car. It was a black Toyota as to not draw attention. Because to be completely honest we weren't the most inconspicuous with our stolen car, practically unconscious girl, and garbage bags full of vampire ashes. Becca opened the door as I slid in the backseat with Lulu, and then she went up and got in the front. I laid Lulu down and cradled her head in my lap. “ Stop fidgeting already she'll be fine,” she said in a quiet voice trying not to wake her up. I inhaled. “Ya.” was all I said. I didn't want to let Becca know how secretly panicked I was. She really didn't need another excuse to tease me. It had been more than a year ago the first time I saw Lulu. Becca and I had only escaped a few months before and were living in the same types of buildings that vampires usually lived. But at the time we were selfish so we payed no attention to the vampire and his victim. That night I heard a lot of crashing and walked in to see her. She looked like an avenging angel with golden hair and chocolate eyes. Lulu pulled out her bow and arrow with a speed impossible to humans and destroyed the Vampire. She then pulled out a lighter to finish him off and dropped. She turned and walked away over to the boy in the corner who was covering his eyes and shaking. Just like turning off a switch, she suddenly turned to a completely sweet person. She spoke calmly and quietly to the kid until he nodded. She picked him up and promised to take him home. The kid gave her a watery smile and clung to her as she continued to murmur to him reassuringly. For a moment I thought she might have sensed me in the shadows, but she simply hugged the boy tighter for a second and then disappeared. It was then that I realized she wasn't completely human, but to me, that just made her that much more interesting. Ever since then I would look for her and when found, would follow her to her next mission. Of course I would never interfere, but would watch to see her fight and to find out her identity. Over time the more I found out about her, and not just what she was, but who she was, I found it impossible to stay away. It was like a song that you listen to over and over again but is so complex no matter how many times you hear it there is always something that keeps your attention until the end of the songs and makes you want to hear it again.
When we were little, mine and Becca's parents were so different we would ask them why they were so good together. They used to say, “You don't love or understand someone because of what they look like or how they dress. You love them because they're a song that only you can understand.” We used to laugh and tell them that people can't be songs but they would just smile and say that someday we would understand. At the time I didn't believe them, but now......... I looked back down as her eyelids popped open. • * * Lulu * * * I looked up into the same blue as last time and tried to sit up as I realized something and panicked. “ Oh My Goodness!!!! The girls. We have to get them back home!!!” But Gabriel who was surprisingly strong for a human easily kept me down. “ Calm down okay. The girls that you are probably talking about are probably home by now. We saw them hightailing it out of the building, probably around the times the two vamps started going at it.” I calmed down only a little and told myself that I would watch the news tomorrow just in case. “Where are we?” I looked around the dark backseat of a car with slightly tinted windows that I tried to sit up to see out of. Again Gabriel kept me where I was and I started to realize that part of the reason it was so easy was because I was seriously weakened. Even my voice hadn't returned to normal yet and it was beginning to get extremely embarrassing to keep talking. But there were things I still needed to know. “We're about 5 minutes away from your house,” he answered. “ How do you know where I live,” I asked, adding on confusion and suspicion and probably another unanswered question. “ You were murmuring things in your sleep,” he said not missing a beet. I simply nodded, suppressing the urge to narrow my eyes. I rarely talked in my sleep and there is a very slim change I did it while somewhat unconscious not to mention the fact that I wouldn't start randomly blurting out my street address. I made a mental note to create something to watch for people (among other things) that were following me. Just then we passed over a bump and I winced as it jostled my, most likely broken, ribs. Gabriel noticed. He slid his hand down my stomach to the bottom of my shirt. “ May I,” he asked almost casually. “Whatever,” I mumbled in too much pain to really care. He lifted up my shirt to show my black and blue stomach up to my ribs that were undoubtedly broken, with all the swelling. He took it a quick breath then pulled it back down and looked away from me to the window. I looked and saw what looked like pain in his eyes as if he could feel it with me. I decided that was wrong and that it was most likely disgust. I didn't have much time to dwell on that though because we were at my house and Becca was parking. I was slightly panicked at what my dad would think when we walked in, but as Gabriel pulled me out of the car the pain was so bad I almost fainted again. I was only about half conscious when the door to the house swung open and my father was there. “ Lulu, what on earth happened to you?” my father turned to glare at Gabriel “What did you do to her? I swear to god if you hurt her you will be making a very early trip to hell?” he thundered and for once in my life I actually thought that that very well might be true, but then again..... “Sir, I swear, I didn't hurt her, but the person who did didn't exactly leave her in the best shape so we really should hurry...” “ Alright,” my dad nodded going into what I call Doctor mode, he started giving orders to everyone
including Danny who had come outside and who looked horrified. “ You,” he said pointing to Gabriel, “ get Lulu on to the couch in the room to the right. Danny go get my supplies from the bathroom. You,” he said pointing to Becca, “ Go get a bucket of water from the kitchen on the left and bring it into the living room.” he finished and they all rushed inside. Gabriel put me down on the couch and went to get a blanket. I shook my head. “ It's okay, I don't really get cold.” He nodded and hung it over the back of the couch. My dad checked my pupils and asked what area's were the most badly damaged. I lifted my wrist. “ My wrist, my ankle and my ribs,” he checked all three and sucked a breath at the condition of my ribs. He then started rapping stuff around them then he got out a needle and stuck it in some medicine containers. “ This will probably knock you out for a while,” he warned. I simply nodded not having the energy for anything else and glad to be unaware for a few hours. He stuck it in the inside of my elbow and injected the medication. Within seconds my eyelids started to droop and I turned my head away from the group of people in the room as I drifted off. * * * Gabriel * * * “ That should about do it,” said Lulu's father as he finished wrapping up and plastering her wrist and ankle. He said although broken her ribs were in the right spot to start healing themselves. He waved us into the kitchen as Danny went over and got us all water except for himself. I eyed him and jumped up. “ You're a vampire!” “ No shit,” he replied not even fazed. “ Calm down, kid he's knew. He's not going to hurt anybody.” I shook it off. I would have to have Becca follow him to see if he was really trustworthy. For now though it seemed Lulu's dad had a few questions. “ First off what are your names then explain what happened.” Me and Anna introduced ourselves and then explained what happened after we showed up leaving out the part where I had to do rescue breathing for up to two minutes before she came to. “ Guess I owe you one then,” he half smiled as he finished his water looking a little exhausted. “ It was no problem really. After all. All we did was save her one life while she saves many lives a week. I'd say the world owes her a few favors.” “ Maybe thats true, but even if she didn't do all that she would still be worth much more to me than any other person ,” he said sadly and sighed. “ And that's the part she really can't seem to understand.” “ Well even if, what she did wasn't very smart, she doesn't seem stupid, so when she comes too just tell her.” He shook his head. “ When she comes too she won't be able to listen to anything or make sense of anything.” At our alarmed looks he explained, “ too much drugs in her system.” After a couple moments silence he spoke again. “ So what brings you two to the city, and how did you get these powers in the first place.” “ Oh we've lived outside the city for just over a year. We aren't completely sure how we got our 'powers'. Really they don't even make sense. You see, I can control (and as some say bend), fire and I have (I guess you could call it), super strength, but before I got them, I didn't even like fire and I was a total weakling. Becca can 'bend' water and has super speed, but before she was scared of water (well scared of drowning anyway) and was totally slow.” “ Well than whatever morphed your bodies was a completely different substance so instead of clinging to your cells and strengthening them it made up it's own and combined them with the rest.” “ I gotta say Doc I didn't understand a word of that.” “ Oh, well thats not important, anyway what......” “ We really should get going,” I interrupted him. I got up.
“ One thing though, would it be alright for us to come back and visit?” “ Of course, come back anytime.” I briefed a smile then motioned for Becca to come outside. “ See ya later Doc,” I called as me and Anna returned to the car we had borrowed, in order to return it and find a place to stay for tonight. * * * I knew I was asleep, I mean even in a world full of vampires, and many other supernatural creatures, things things like this just didn't happen. What I meant was. Why the hell was I sitting with what appeared to be a 4 year old Lulu and her mother. They looked a lot a like so that wasn't hard to figure out. I also knew it was a dream besides the fact that Lulu wasn't 2 anymore and her mother didn't appear to be around, she was also wearing a little flowered pink dress and pigtails. Even if I only technically just met her I knew that was something that only could have happened when someone still had the power to force her into it. But even then she didn't seem to mind. She was smiling away but unlike any other smiles I have seen her wear this one was real. She wasn't smiling for anything else than because she wanted too. As I watched her mother walked over and placed a cake covered in smarties on the table. “ One second while I get the candles,” she said absolutely radiating joy. She turned and started raiding the cupboards. While she was preoccupied Lulu smiled devilishly and climbed unto the table and started eating all the smarties of the cake. I choked a laugh but had the sudden instinct to keep silent. Lulu finished almost all the smarties in record time and climbed back into her chair looking innocent before her mother turned around. “ Found them....” She announced proudly, then trailed off as she noticed the missing smarties. The absolutely shocked and confused look on her face was enough to send me over the edge and I burst out laughing. Her mother didn't notice but this time Lulu did. She looked shocked and before my eyes the happy kitchen scene dissolved and she turned back into her proper age and clothing. This time a park appeared before me as it started to rain. She continued to stand there shocked for a minute then seemed to collect herself. “ What are you doing here? You have no right to be here.” “ I really have no idea how I ended up here. So which Birthday was that anyway?” She glared at me suspicious but still answered. “ 4th .” So I was right about that. “ So where are we now?” This time she turned around and pointed at a small cottage on the other side of the park. “ That was where we used to live.” She said it without showing anything like it really didn't matter, and they just happened to move away one day. But it was pretty obvious this place meant something to her, that there was a reason she kept returning here in her dreams. Now she looked a bit panicked. “ How do you know I've dreamed about it before?” I didn't really it was just a guess but what was scarier was that I realized this really wasn't my dream at all this was hers. Even more scarier than that she seamed to be able to read my thoughts. Oh yeah like you can't read mine? Get the hell out of my head!!! I swear I'm not doing this on purpose and for all we know this could be your fault not mine. Okay well I'm not really sure either of us is doing this but the important thing is that we figure out how to make it stop! What If I don't want it to stop? Then she got a dangerous look in her Eye and I could feel her mind reaching out to mind mind. What are you doing? I'm going to take all your secrets and spill them everywhere so you know how it feels to have someone really in your head rather than just hearing the odd thought. That may happen if we don't get rid of this. I squirmed uncomfortably. She was right. Even if it was kinda cool getting into someone else's
head I really would rather no one ever saw some of the things in my head. Especially the stuff I wish weren't in there. You want to forget? Well let's just say there are a lot of bad stuff in there. She switched back to verbal communication. “ You may think that you want to forget some things, but your wrong. If you erase some bad things ,the good things go with it. It may seem painful to remember it right now but some day..... Someday you might be strong enough to remember what happened, and except it. Except it so you can truly move on and move foreword.” She blushed a bit which surprised me. She just didn't seem like the blushing type. “ Sorry, I tend to babble sometimes. Anyway I think if one of us wakes up it will go away.” She seemed to remember the old cliché, ' Pinch me I must be dreaming'. She reached out and pinched herself in the arm and closed her eyes. At first nothing happened. She opened one eye just as the park started to dissolve along with herself she sighed and did a little salute. In the blink of an eye she was gone and I was able to drift back into my own dreams. * * * Lulu * * * I woke up and tried to sit up. I gasped and fell back on the covers. What the hell? Well it was just a really strange dream after all. I mean sure he could control fire and was strong... but walking through people's dreams?, is just a little too weird. I then remembered why it had been painful sitting up. Crap! I had forgotten about the beating I had taken before I fell asleep, my dad wasn't going to go easy on me this time. Especially after what had happened to mom and the promise I mad him before I started hunting. The promise not to ever go hunting without a weapon or against that many opponents or the most important, to go against an ancient. I had broken all of them in one night. I winced but not from the pain of my physical injuries but for the look of disappointment and sadness and anger in my dad's eyes when he gave me heck. Luckily I was still exhausted and even worrying about morning wasn't enough to keep me up. Ignoring the strange dream that happened last time, I managed to fall into a not quite peaceful but dreamless sleep. * * * Danny * * * It was weird that I didn't sleep all that much anymore. I could probably run to the border and back before anyone else was even semi conscious. Well except Lulu who seemed to only sleep for about three hours a night but even she was completely comatose. And it was about 7 in the morning. Which meant that Mr. Davis (Lulu's dad) will be up in 3....2 …..1. “ Morning Danny.” He muttered being polite. I didn't miss how he left out 'good'. By his standards ,already this would be a very bad morning... And a bad day.. and probably a bad night after that. He loved Lulu and it would probably be very hard to love someone who seemed to be born without the instinct to be selfish or to protect yourself above others. That she definitely lacked. He popped some toast in the toaster then turned to me. “ Danny I know I don't know you that well but I would like to ask a favour.” he paused. “ Lulu doesn't really take advice or orders from anyone. Always been that way. But at the moment she won't be able too walk around even if she wanted too which, believe me, she'll want too. But as soon as she'll be able to even walk she'll go out hunting again. If she does that there's a huge chance she
won't live. What I mean is..... I need you to keep her from hunting again until she's completely healed.” I considered, “ But how am I supposed to do that if she doesn't listen to anyone?” “ First of all in her condition you are presently a lot stronger, and second..” He looked a little sheepish as he continued. “ Guilt her. She can't stand the thought of someone else suffering physically or emotionally so mostly just keep an eye on her till she looks like she might try to do something stupid . Try to talk her out of it first. Most likely she'll recognize that as a sign of being caught and she'll drop it...for a bit.” “ Alright Mr. Davis I'll do it. I don't want her to die either. But...may I... ask what happened to her mother.” He seemed to freeze unable to speak. “ I..i..i. Didn't mean to be rude I was just curious.” I stammered part of me hoping to drop it. “ No it's okay... you just surprised me. Well you see Lulu's mother was a hunter too. One night she was really reckless... and I was too late to help her. Lulu was devastated, naturally. She was always a lot smarter and was able to understand what was really happening. You see she had only just turned 4 at the time....” He glanced at his watch grateful for the distraction. “ Speaking of the time I don't want to be late. I gave her some more medicine so she'll be out for a while but please make sure she has some sugar.” I nodded. He came over and clapped his hand on my shoulder. “ Thank you.” After that he turned grabbed his bag and left. I went to the living room. I knew I would have to get some more blood soon, although I felt pretty okay, I wasn't sure how fast that could change. Leanne's number was on the fridge so I picked it up. She said that if I needed help she could get someone to send some over. I dialed, and leaned against the fridge. She picked up on the fourth ring. “ For heavens sake Lulu!! Can't an old witch get her sleep Nowadays?” “ Umm.... It's not Lulu. It's Danny... Can you help me?” * * * Becca * * * Gabriel was awake by the time I got back. Sleeping on rooftops was always uncomfortable for me but he always seemed to prefer being high up for some reason. So we compromised and tomorrow we could actually sleep indoors. Gabriel seemed to be in one of his quiet moods when I got back, but I had just the thing to help. “ Hey Gabe,” I walked over. “ You know I hate it when you call me tha......” He trailed off as he saw what I was carrying. His eyes widened and he jumped up. “ Is that really.....?” “ Yes I found your guitar.” I rolled my eyes but I was really happy for him. His guitar was the only thing left over from his original parents and the green guitar pick around his neck was the only thing left to him from our parents. They left me a little locket but not with a photo. I swore that no matter what I would remember what they looked like. Even if that some how faded I would still love them. I was sure Gabriel felt the same. Not that he'd ever admit it. The only way he ever let anything out was through music and even that didn't give a whole lot away. While Gabriel made brilliant melodies he was useless at words. Either they would be too hokey or they wouldn't make any sense what so ever. “ But how....? Where did you find it?” I bit my lip. “ Well to tell you the truth I hid it in the first place. I thought I knew the aliens were coming but you would have never believed me.” “ Your right........ I still don't believe they were aliens. But.. uh.. thanks for looking after it for me.” I smiled, “ Your welcome.” That was as far as it goes as a conversation with him. “ So why you up so early?” He shrugged “Bad dream,” he muttered. He lifted his guitar carefully
out of it's case and smoothed his fingers over the surface. Then he took of his necklace. He had callouses on his hands from playing it without the pick, but he still preferred it with. He said it just helped the sound. I didn't know anything about musical instruments so I just took his word for it. He started playing and just like that every thing was calm again. “ So when we gonna see Lulu today.” He smiled, he knew I knew him well. “How about lunchtime?,” He murmured. “ Sure,” thank god they had foooooooooood!
