Rhetorical Analysis of President Bushs 9/11 Address to the Nation

After the terrorist attacks of 9/11 President Bush gave the American people what they

needed after such a devastating event. President Bush stood before congress and the American

people and spoke about the terrorist attacks. President Bush made a speech that was able to

provoke the hearts of the American citizen by using various techniques such as logos ethos and

pathos. The appeals he made set a fire in the hearts of the American citizens and got them

inspired to fight against terrorism. With this speech president bush was able to help encourage

congress and the American people to helping fight terror. He explained that there are countries

all over harboring terrorists that are capable of doing very harmful things. This speech led to the

start of the war on terrorism and helped to pass very important acts

President Bush said We have seen the state of our Union in the endurance of rescuers, working

past exhaustion. We've seen the unfurling of flags, the lighting of candles, and the giving of

blood, the saying of prayers -- in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. We have seen the decency of a

loving and giving people who have made the grief of strangers their own." he uses a pathological

appeal. He talks about the hard work of the American people during this time. He talks about the

heart of our people and that we are people who are caring and loving. This really gets into the

minds of Americans since they are caring and loving people they didnt deserve the actions of the

terrorist. The appeal President Bush creates a sense of innocence and the act the terrorist carried

out was not something they deserved.

And on the behalf of the American people, I thank the world for outpouring support

This quote is an appeal to ethics or ethos because it shows that with all of the support from

American citizens and other countries that the attack that was carried out must have been wrong.

Around this time many countries were playing America's national anthem or saying a prayer as

the United States underwent its terroristic attacks. This outpouring support lets the American

people that they are not in this alone and there are many countries that have Americas back if

"These terrorists kill not merely to end lives, but to disrupt and end a way of life. With every

atrocity, they hope that America grows fearful, retreating from the world and forsaking our

friends. They stand against us, because we stand in their way." This quote explains why the

terrorist had attacked us. They attacked The United states because they are such a force.

Terrorist are out mainly to cause crimes and acts of genocide and the United States has always

stood in their way. The terroristic actions they have tried are only to make us fear them. This

quote proves that terrorist attack us to try to invalidate exactly what America stands for.

Bush uses repetition of words like us our and them . By using these words he helps

to show that the all Americans are in this together. The victim of the terrorist attack wasn't just

high ranked American politicians it was American citizens. When bush uses words like us it

really lets the American citizen know that these attacks can happen to anyone and unless we try

to stop it anyone could be the next victim. These words really help to American citizens who

have something they would like to protect involved in stopping terrorism.

The imagery president bush uses in his speech is very heart touching and sympathetic as

well. President bush says The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge

structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding

anger. by using this imagery the American people get a sense of how devastating the actions of

the terrorist attack was. It also instilled an image in the minds of the American citizens and

provides them with a feeling of what it was like to be in New York at the time of the attack.

President Bush uses a simile when he says "These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the

steel of American resolve. He explains that the terrorist have the able to attack us but they can't

stop what America truly is. America may be attacked over and over again but the terrorist cannot

stop what America is willing to go through to obtain their resolve. The terrorist can only attack

on the surface of America but not the heart of America.

The night after the 9/11 terrorist Attack President Bush was able to present a speech that

helped capture the hearts of the American people as he presented the speech in front of congress.

President Bush used many devices and appeals to give the American people what they need after

an attack like this, a speech that would help bring up their spirits and encourage the American people

to fight against terrorism. With this speech president bush was able to convince congress into declaring

war and there starting the war on terrorism. Two very important acts were passed as a result of this speech

the USA Patriot act and the Homeland security act. Due to his speech American was able to achieve

revenge on the terrorist attacks and more security so that these kinds of attacks never happen again.
