Chapter 22

Of Religious Worship and the Sabbath Day

1. The light of nature shows that there is a God, who hath lordship and
sovereignty over all; is just, good, and doth good unto all; and is therefore to
be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the
heart, and all the soul, and with all the might.

Jeremiah Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch
10:7 as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like
unto thee.

Mark And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God;
12:32 and there is none other but he:
Mark And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul,
12:33 and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole
burnt offerings and sacrifices.

But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God, is instituted by Himself,

Deuteronomy What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto,
12:32 nor diminish from it.

and so limited by His own revealed will, that He may not be worshipped according to
the imagination and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible
representations, or any other way, not prescribed in the Holy Scriptures.

Exodus Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in
20:4 heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exodus Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a
20:5 jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and
fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exodus And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
20:6
2. Religious worship is to be given to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and to
Him alone;

Matthew Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all
4:8 the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
Matthew And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and
4:9 worship me.
Matthew Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship
4:10 the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

John The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there
6:22 was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that
Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
John (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat
6:23 bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
John When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took
6:24 shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

Matthew Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and
28:19 of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I
28:20 am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

not to angels, saints, or any other creatures;

Romans Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own
1:24 hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Romans Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more
1:25 than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Colossians Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of
2:18 angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his
fleshly mind,
Colossians And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having
2:19 nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
Revelation And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am
19:10 thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship
God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

and since the fall, not without a Mediator,

John Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know
14:5 the way?
John Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the
14:6 Father, but by me.
John If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye
14:7 know him, and have seen him.

nor in the mediation of any other but Christ alone.

I Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus;
I Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

3. Prayer and thankfulness, being one special part of natural worship, is by God
required of all men.

Psalm O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our
95:1 salvation.
Psalm Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him
95:2 with psalms.
Psalm For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
95:3
Psalm In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.
95:4
Psalm The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.
95:5
Psalm O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
95:6
Psalm For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To
95:7 day if ye will hear his voice,
Psalm Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the
95:8 wilderness:
Psalm When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
95:9

Psalm O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.
65:2

But that it may be accepted, it is to be made in the name of the Son,

John And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be
14:13 glorified in the Son.
John If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
14:14

by the help of the Spirit,

Romans Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray
8:26 for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which
cannot be uttered.

according to His will;

I John And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to
5:14 his will, he heareth us:
I John And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions
5:15 that we desired of him.

with understanding, reverence, humility, fervency, faith, love, and perseverance;

and when with others , in a known tongue.
I Corinthians Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of
14:16 the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what
thou sayest?
I Corinthians For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
14:17

4. Prayer is to be made for things lawful, and for all sorts of men living, or that
shall live hereafter;

I Timothy I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of
2:1 thanks, be made for all men;
I Timothy For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable
2:2 life in all godliness and honesty.

II Samuel And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast
7:28 promised this goodness unto thy servant:
II Samuel Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue
7:29 for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let
the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

but not for the dead,

II Samuel Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast
12:21 and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise
and eat bread.
II Samuel And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell
12:22 whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
II Samuel But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to
12:23 him, but he shall not return to me.

not for those of whom it may be known, that they have sinned the sin unto death.
I John If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give
5:16 him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he
shall pray for it.

5. The reading of the Scriptures,

I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

preaching, and hearing the Word of God,

II Timothy I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the
4:1 quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
II Timothy Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
4:2 longsuffering and doctrine.

Luke Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and
8:18 whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord;

Colossians Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing
3:16 one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your
hearts to the Lord.

Ephesians And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
5:18

5:19 making melody in your heart to the Lord;

5:20 Lord Jesus Christ;

5:21

as also the administration of baptism,

Matthew Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and
28:19 of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I
28:20 am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

and the Lord's supper,

I Corinthians For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a
11:6 woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

are all parts of religious worship of God, to be performed in obedience to Him, with
understanding, faith, reverence, and godly fear; moreover, solemn humiliation, with
fastings,

Esther Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and
4:16 neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise;
and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I
perish.

Joel The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be
2:10 dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
Joel And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is
2:11 strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who
can abide it?
Joel Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with
2:12 fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
Joel And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
2:13 gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

6. Neither prayer, nor any other part of religious worship, is now, under the
gospel, tied unto, or made more acceptable by any place in which it is
performed, or towards which it is directed; but God is to be worshipped
everywhere in spirit, and in truth;

John Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where
4:20 men ought to worship.
John Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this
4:21 mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

Malachi For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be
1:11 great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name,
and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of
hosts.

I Timothy 2:8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and
doubting.

as in private families

Acts There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the
10:1 Italian band,
Acts A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the
10:2 people, and prayed to God alway.

daily,

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name.
Matthew Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
6:10
Matthew Give us this day our daily bread.
6:11
Matthew And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
6:12
Matthew And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom,
6:13 and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Psalm 55:17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my
voice.
and in secret, each one by himself,

Matthew But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door,
6:6 pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward
thee openly.

so more solemnly in the public assemblies, which are not carelessly, nor wilfully to
be neglected or forsaken, when God by His word or providence calleth thereto.

Hebrews Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that
10:23 promised;)
Hebrews And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
10:24
Hebrews Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but
10:25 exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Acts And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of
2:42 bread, and in prayers.

7. As it is the law of nature, that in general, a proportion of time, by God's

appointment be set apart for the worship of God, so by His Word, in a
positive, moral, and perpetual commandment, binding all men, in all ages, He
hath particularly appointed one day in seven for a sabbath to be kept holy
unto Him,

Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

which from the beginning of the world, to the resurrection of Christ, was the last day
of the week, and from the resurrection of Christ, was changed into the first day of
the week, which is called the Lord's Day;
I Corinthians Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the
16:1 churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
I Corinthians Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God
16:2 hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Acts And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul
20:7 preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until
midnight.

Revelation I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a
1:10 trumpet,
Revelation Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a
1:11 book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto
Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto
Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

and it is to be continued to the end of the world, as the Christian Sabbath, the
observation of the last day of the week being abolished.

8. The sabbath is then kept holy unto the Lord, when men, after a due preparing
of their hearts, and ordering their common affairs aforehand, do not only
observe an holy rest all the day from their own works, words and thoughts,
about their worldly employments and recreations,

Isaiah And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the
58:12 foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach,
The restorer of paths to dwell in.

Nehemiah In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing
13:15 in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of
burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against
them in the day wherein they sold victuals.
Nehemiah There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware,
13:16 and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
Nehemiah Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this
13:17 that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?
Nehemiah Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon
13:18 this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.
Nehemiah And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the
13:19 sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not
be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there
should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
Nehemiah So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or
13:20 twice.
Nehemiah Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye
13:21 do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the
sabbath.
Nehemiah And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they
13:22 should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my
God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

but are also taken up the whole time in the public and private exercises of His
worship and in the duties of necessity and mercy.

Matthew At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were
12:1 an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
Matthew But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that
12:2 which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
Matthew But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred,
12:3 and they that were with him;
Matthew How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not
12:4 lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Matthew Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple
12:5 profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Matthew But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
12:6
Matthew But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye
12:7 would not have condemned the guiltless.
Matthew For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
12:8
Matthew And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:
12:9
Matthew And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him,
12:10 saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
Matthew And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one
12:11 sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it
out?
Matthew How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the
12:12 sabbath days.
Matthew Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it
12:13 was restored whole, like as the other.
