you will see the 100-year-old oak tree that welcomes you to the
property and entrance to the historic cellar.

A Bit of History
The winery is like a living time capsule and a walk down the
winding road of historic winemaking. In the early 1860s, with
dreams of striking it rich, Ed Haus emigrated from Switzerland
with his three brothers to join in the California Gold Rush. In
1897, Ed founded The Burgundy Wine & Olive Factory. Today
the winery is known as Pope Valley Winery. It took the Haus
family eight years to dig the cave and construct the winery that is
still used today. Constructed as a gravity flow winery, Pope Valley
Winery was built into the hillside and sits three stories high. The
cellar is dug into the shale hillside and held up by century-old,
hand-hewn redwood timbers. The timbers which were used in a
neighboring mine during the Quick Silver boom were transported
by horse-drawn carriage to construct the Pope Valley Winery.
Through the years, the winery has endured a colorful past with
various family proprietors and a brief stint of bootlegging during
prohibition.

THE HESS
COLLECTION
Wine, Elevated
The Hess story has always been about the quest to elevate the wine
experience from the planting of mountain vineyards, to sustainable farming
practices, investment in state of the art winemaking equipment and a winery
visitor experience featuring a world class contemporary art museum.
Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, the
beginning of The Hess Collection Winery in Napa Valley. He founded the
winery with the steadfast belief that quality and goodness are the best business
practices. The Hess Collection now owns more than 1,000 acres of prime
California vineyards, including 700 in Napa Valley. The Hess Collection site
was established as a winery in the 1860s in what is now the Mount Veeder
Appellation of the Napa Valley. The original winery on Mount Veeder was
hewn from native stone in 1903 and houses part of an art collection shown in
museums worldwide, making the Hess Collection the premier showcase for
Hess two passions under one roof. He has tremendous pride in everything
the family has built and this pride is symbolized through the Lion which
appears on every wine from the Hess Collection. The Hess family credo is Live
each day with the heart and courage of the Lion.
The Romans believed that good grapes are grown on the hills, says Hess.
I saw that the soils on Mount Veeder were deep, volcanic, rocky soils. These
are the very best conditions for growing berries that are smaller and more
concentrated, which leads to a structured, powerful and complex wine. The
wines cultivated at The Hess Collection demonstrate the distinctive qualities

A Celebration of Wine Countrys Best Food and Wine to Support Make-A-Wish

For the last 18 years, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and
Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards have been teaming up on an event that
not only helps children suffering from life-threatening illnesses, but
that offers a wide sampling of the best food and wine being produced
in Sonoma County. Every year this event highlights not only the
regions incredible wine and food, but also the many volunteers
and supporters who live in the area and help make wishes for local
children come true, said Make-A-Wish CEO, Betsy Biern.
Wishes in Wine Country will be held on Saturday, May 20 at
Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards and will feature over 40 restaurants and
wineries at the Grand Tasting on the Lawn. From 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.,
guests will sample wines on the lawns surrounding Sonoma-Cutrers
world class croquet courts. Included in the Tasting is Sonoma-Cutrer,
who will be pouring their award-winning Chardonnay. This years
participants also include Valdez, De la Montanya and Wilson, among
others. Tasting guests can also sample signature hors doeuvres
from celebrated local restaurants. This year these include Valette,
El Dorado Kitchen, John Ash & Co. and more. Guests will also have
the opportunity to play croquet or enjoy the view from one of the
courtside cabanas. As in previous years, guests will find a variety of
unique getaways, wines and experiences at the silent auction.
The evening continues from 5:30-9:30 p.m. with the Sunset
Dinner, where guests enjoy a three-course dinner on the Sonoma-
Cutrer Terrace. Dinner will be prepared by local culinary talent and
will be paired with exceptional wines from the area. During dinner,
guests can participate in a short live auction that has been curated
to feature the most hard-to-come-by items and experiences. All
proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area.
Tickets are now on sale for the Grand Tasting ($150 per person)
and The Sunset Dinner ($300 per person and up). For more
information go to wishesinwinecountry.com or call (415) 982-9474.
